Chapter 7: Chapter 7

It’s my best friend, Anna.

God, I needed someone to help me process all of this... and everything with Eliza too.

I told Luna Celeste I wanted to meet a friend. She patted my shoulder and said I definitely needed to unwind. After all, everyone knew just how impossible Dominic could be.

I’m grateful for her. It’s the first time I’ve actually felt something like a mother’s warmth. I promised myself I’d do whatever I could to help Luna Celeste someday.

I arrived at a restaurant in the pack’s neutral territory.

"You’re actually insane, Lena." Anna sliced into her crepe, her blue eyes widening like I’d just told her I robbed a bank. Her voice shook between lingering fear and this weird, reluctant admiration. "You straddled Dominic Voss? Unbuttoned his shirt? Babe, were you out of your damn mind?"

"Maybe." I took a sip of my latte, trying to sound all casual and unbothered. "But hey, I’m still alive and having lunch with you, aren’t I?"

Anna rolled her eyes—gracefully, because of course she did—but her lips curved up. "I seriously cannot with you. And he didn’t... you know, do anything to you? I mean, being alone with him, the tension, the whole vibe—and he’s a—" she leaned in, whispering, "a cursed Alpha with supposedly insane... urges."

"He didn’t." I shook my head, the memory of Dominic’s cold, irritated stare prickling under my skin. "He shoved me off and told me to get back to my room."

Anna stirred her coffee, worry softening her voice. "Look, I get you want to bury all the crap from before. I do. But those rumors aren’t just rumors. Dominic isn’t regular-angry. He’s the kind of angry that gets people killed. You need to find a way out."

"I know." I squeezed her hand, thankful for the warmth. "But it’s not that simple, Anna."

"Whatever. Screw all that depressing shit. Come on, we’re going shopping. Alpha Dominic’s loaded—you should at least let him know that making a baby starts with keeping the mom in a good mood." Anna gave me a playful shove.

After lunch, we wandered down the shopping street, letting the heavy conversation fade for a moment. The sun felt great, and we even stopped to laugh at a ridiculous, way-too-expensive dress on display.

Then suddenly, my whole body went cold. Anna followed my gaze and muttered under her breath, "Oh, hell no. That piece of crap."

Luke. With that red-haired woman.

A wave of nausea punched through me.

"Let’s go," I whispered, grabbing Anna’s arm. But she bristled. "Why are we leaving? You scared of him?"

"It’s not fear, it’s disgust. Let’s stay away from the filth."

I tugged her along faster, but Luke had already spotted us. His face darkened. He dropped the redhead and lunged toward us.

"Lena!" He blocked our path, his eyes burning with a mix of fury and shadow.

Anna instantly stepped in front of me. "Back off, Luke!"

Luke ignored her, his eyes locked on me. "You made me a damn joke. You think this is over?" He reached for my arm, rough and entitled.

I jerked away and slapped him across the face.

The crack echoed, leaving my palm stinging. Luke’s head snapped to the side, a red print blooming fast. When he turned back, his eyes were bloodshot, furious. "You hit me?!"

"You’re lucky I didn’t bring a knife," I said, staring him down. The shock on his face was almost funny—clearly, the meek Lena he used to know wasn’t standing here anymore.

People nearby were starting to stare. Anna seized the moment and grabbed my wrist. "Lena, move!"

We headed off, ducking into a quieter side street, but Luke came after us again. This time his eyes glowed an unnatural red, his facial bones twitching—he was halfway shifting just to scare me.

"Run? Let’s see where you think you’re going, you bitch!" he snarled, his voice roughening, Beta pressure rolling off him. It wasn’t anywhere near an Alpha’s force, but enough to make a normal Omega buckle.

He lunged. Anna tried to step between us, and he shoved her aside without a thought.

My heart hammered; I braced myself. But something else got to him first. A blur shot past me—then a brutal kick connected with Luke’s ribs.

A dull thud, followed by the faint crack of bone. Luke flew backward, slammed into a metal trash bin, and let out a choked scream. "Ah—!"

I looked up. Dominic had appeared out of nowhere, standing just a few paces away. He wore a sharply tailored charcoal coat, the cold winter light making his face even paler, sharper. That kick had been so fast I barely saw it—and he wasn’t even breathing hard.

Dominic’s gray eyes slid over Luke on the ground, completely indifferent, then lifted to me with the same icy emptiness.

Luke struggled upright, and when he saw who it was, anger drained straight into horror. "Alpha Dominic?" he rasped, confused and terrified. "Why are you interfering? This is between me and Lena—"

The air tightened instantly, heavy with Alpha dominance. Luke’s face went chalk-white, his body curling in on itself.

Dominic said just one word. "Leave."

Luke forgot his pride, forgot his pain—he scrambled to his feet and bolted, not daring to look back. The street went quiet again, but the tension only got worse. Dominic gave me a cold glance. "Get in the car."

He didn’t wait, just turned and headed for the black sedan by the curb. Daniel, one of his men, opened the door for me. I had no choice but to follow.

The car was roomy, filled with that sharp cedar scent Dominic Voss always carried. The heater was blasting, but it couldn’t melt the tension pressing down on me. Daniel pulled the car onto the road, smooth and silent.

Dominic was the first to break the quiet. His voice was colder than the air outside.

"Your social life is really something."

I tightened my hands on my lap and shot back,

"He came looking for trouble. I was just defending myself."

"Defending yourself?" He lifted a brow, the curve laced with mockery.

"Slapping him in public so hard he almost shifted in the middle of the street? That’s not defense. That’s provocation."

Dominic leaned toward me a little, and the Alpha pressure rolled through the enclosed space. He wasn’t even trying, but it still squeezed the breath out of my lungs.

"I’m not interested in you. All this drama annoys me. You leaving the pack would solve everything."

My heart sank. Dominic hated trouble—and I was a walking source of it. But I couldn’t break the bond. Without Dominic’s protection, my father would sell me off again.

And Luke’s revenge would come sooner or later.

I forced myself to look up, to sound steady and honest.

"I get that you want this over. But I have to carry your heir. Without Theodore and Celeste’s approval, I don’t have the authority to end the agreement."

It was the only card I had, the only thing keeping me here for now. Dominic’s expression iced over. He leaned back, eyes closing, refusing to look at me—yet the cold anger pouring off him felt almost physical.

"What do you want from me? What’s got you so desperate that you’d risk your life just to stay near me?" Dominic grabbed my chin, his voice cutting and frigid.

My blood froze. I knew he was terrified of being unwanted.

But every time he touched me, it felt like someone lit a fuse under my skin. I lifted my head and, without thinking, bit down hard on his lips.
