Elena’s words had barely finished when the pressure around Stephen changed.
The courtyard of Iron House had already survived too much. Dickoff’s borrowed power had cracked the stone, broken walls, shattered windows, and damaged several parts of the main mansion. Now, as the two Gods faced each other, the remaining servants hiding around the damaged entrances quickly understood that what happened before had only been the beginning.
Stephen looked at Elena without showing much emotion.
"You should move aside."
Elena did not.
She stood directly between him and Sekhmet, with her back partly turned toward her nephew and her full attention on the old butler in front of her.
"You entered this city planning to destroy the soul of a Dawn House member," Elena said. "You should be more worried about whether I will let you leave."
Mihos gave a small laugh from several steps behind Stephen.
The anger he had shown earlier had already changed. He was no longer throwing things or shouting. Elena’s arrival had created a problem, but it was not a problem he believed could change the result.
Stephen was a mid-rank God.
Elena was not.
Mihos knew that difference better than almost anyone else present.
He stepped away from the centre of the courtyard and looked toward one of the large stone seats that had survived near the side of the mansion entrance. It had once been used by Iron House guards while receiving important guests. Mihos brushed some dust from it with his hand and sat down.
Several frightened Iron House servants watched him.
Mihos crossed one leg over the other.
"Stephen," he said. "Do not take too long."
Elena’s eyes became colder.
Stephen sighed softly.
"Young master, this would have been easier without turning it into a fight between Gods."
"You heard her."
Stephen looked back toward Elena.
"Yes."
Then he moved.
There was no warning.
Sekhmet did not even see Stephen take the first step properly.
One moment, the old butler stood several dozen feet away.
The next moment, his hand was already in front of Elena’s face.
Elena raised her arm.
BOOM!
The collision did not sound like flesh striking flesh.
It sounded like a mountain had cracked.
A circular wave exploded outward from the point where their arms met. The courtyard floor sank. Broken pieces of stone flew toward the mansion walls. Several Iron House servants screamed and threw themselves behind the nearest pillars.
Sekhmet felt the pressure strike his chest.
Sofia and Natasha moved in front of him immediately.
Their Half-God bodies absorbed most of what remained before it could reach him.
Elena slid backward.
Only three steps.
But each step crushed the stone beneath her feet.
Stephen remained where he was.
That alone showed the difference.
Elena looked at her arm.
A thin red line had appeared across the skin.
It disappeared almost immediately.
Stephen lowered his hand.
"You know you cannot win."
Elena answered, "Then you should have no reason to be afraid of continuing."
Stephen’s expression changed slightly.
He raised one hand again.
Something happened to the air.
Sekhmet felt it immediately, but he could not understand what he was feeling.
It was not ordinary chaos energy.
He knew chaos energy. He had fought with it, absorbed it, used it, and felt it in countless forms. What gathered around Stephen was different. The chaos energy was there, but something else existed inside it.
Something deeper.
Something that made the world around his hand feel wrong.
The broken dust floating through the courtyard suddenly stopped falling.
Every grain remained suspended in the air.
Then all of it moved toward Stephen.
It was not because of the wind. It was not because he pulled it with chaos energy.
The dust simply seemed to decide that falling toward the ground was no longer the direction it should follow.
Elena’s expression became serious.
The same strange feeling appeared around her.
Sekhmet looked at her.
For a moment, the ground beneath Elena’s feet changed.
Not visibly at first.
But he felt it.
The stone seemed heavier.
Older.
More solid than it had been a moment before.
The damaged courtyard around her stopped cracking even though Stephen’s pressure continued pushing against it.
Sekhmet narrowed his eyes.
"What is that power?"
The System did not answer. Perhaps he had not asked directly enough. Perhaps it was not something the System intended to explain yet.
But he can ask Elena. When the fight is over.
Stephen moved his fingers.
The floating dust compressed.
In less than a second, millions of tiny particles became a dark spear.
It did not look impressive.
That made it worse.
The spear had no bright light around it. No enormous wave of chaos energy. It simply existed in front of Stephen’s hand with a pressure that made Sekhmet’s Blood Eye hurt when he tried to focus on it.
Stephen flicked one finger.
The spear disappeared.
Elena turned her body.
The spear struck her shoulder.
Blood exploded from her back.
The dark object passed through her body, continued across the courtyard, and entered the outer wall.
There was no explosion.
The entire section of wall simply collapsed into powder.
Sekhmet’s eyes widened.
Elena staggered once.
Her shoulder had been pierced completely.
The wound began healing, but much more slowly than Sekhmet expected from a God.
Stephen looked at her.
"You should have moved."
Elena raised her damaged arm.
The strange pressure around her increased.
She slammed her foot into the courtyard.
The ground moved.
A huge section of stone rose beneath Stephen.
Not broken stone.
The ground itself.
It lifted like the back of some enormous creature and struck upward.
Stephen was thrown into the air.
Elena disappeared from her position.
She appeared above him and drove one fist into his stomach.
The impact bent Stephen’s body.
Then Elena struck him again. Her second fist hit his face.
Stephen flew downward. He struck the courtyard hard enough to create a crater that reached halfway across the open area.
Several servants screamed again.
Mihos did not move from his seat. He only watched.
