Adeline’s pov~

"Why are you so eager to know about my past, Lord Keiran? You want something to entertain you? Is that why you are here to know about my past and just to humiliate me and make me a laughing stock, just so you don’t have any entertainment?" I breathed, my teeth grinding together as pure, raw hatred surged through my blood, burning away the lingering fear.

"Fine!" I looked him in his eyes, lifting my chin.

"Yes, my twin alpha mates rejected me long before. They stood before the entire pack. They didn’t wait for a ceremony. They didn’t grant me the mercy of a sacred ritual. They severed the bond before it could even anchor; they rejected the bond and threw me out. At once. End of flashback."

I shoved his hand away, stepping aside.

"At once? Both the alphas rejected you at the same time?" Kieran asked, his voice carrying a flicker of shock.

"Yes! They did. They destroyed everything I was," I hissed, my eyes flashing with a dark, lethal fire as I stared at him.

"So if you’re asking whether I’m broken, Lord Kieran... the answer is yes. But if you think that makes me weak, if you think that makes me an easy target for the Four Thrones to toy with, you are dead wrong. I survived two alphas ripping my soul apart at the same time. Do you really think a few arrogant princes in this academy terrify me?"

Kieran slowly dropped his hand to his side.

"You think you’re safe because you survived them," Kieran murmured, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper as he took one final step toward the heavy iron doors, unblocking the exit. "But you’re playing in an arena full of monsters now, Adeline."

"I don’t give a damn about anything or anyone. I am not here for games, Lord Keiran. Thanks for helping me earlier." I moved past him and walked out as fast as I could without showing how fast my heart was beating.

~

I entered my dorm and locked it without making a sound. I moved like a ghost inside my own room, holding my breath so the figure sleeping across from me wouldn’t wake up. I was so exhausted—mentally, physically, stripped raw to the bone.

I wasn’t ready for another death threat, another barrage of stupid taunts or sarcastic remarks.

I sank onto the mattress and closed my eyes, but sleep was miles away. My mind was a chaotic, violent storm, spiralling into a dark abyss of doubt.

What if I’m totally wrong?

The thought crept in like ice water, freezing me from the inside out. What if I was looking at the wrong piece of history? What if I was at the completely wrong place, chasing ghosts that had nothing to do with me?

Maybe I had mistaken that Beta Scarlett for my mother. But... she was the only clue I had. Her name was the single fragile thread keeping my past anchored.

If she wasn’t my mother, then I had nothing. No leads, no family, no history. I couldn’t just start from scratch when I didn’t have a single crumb of evidence left to follow.

If this was a dead end, my only choice was to leave—to run as far away from the High Thrones and this blood-soaked academy as my legs could carry me, and never look back.

What if Scarlett is my birth mother and my name was just taken off the list? I can’t just leave like that without knowing what happened to my parents.

My fists clenched in the dark. I can’t just run yet.

I need to eliminate this option first.

I had to find out if I was truly mistaken. And there was only one way to know for sure: I had to find Ashley and Hailey.

If they were Beta Scarlett’s daughters, they held the key. I had to hunt down who they were, track them down, and drag the truth out of them. If they were my sisters... or if they were the real daughters of a completely different Scarlett... I would finally have my answer.

I let out a slow, ragged breath and leaned back against the headboard, closing my eyes, trying to force my hammering pulse to settle.

Gasp. Oh, shit! Ah--

A sudden, sharp pang struck the centre of my chest.

I gasped, my eyes flying open in the pitch black. My hand flew to my sternum, my fingers digging viciously through my hoodie into my skin. The pain wasn’t crushing, but it was a deep throb—a cold, sickening ache that pulsed directly against my ribcage.

What the hell...?

I clutched my chest, my breath hitching as the phantom pain radiated out, sharp and unnatural.

My scentless wolf sat dormant and lifeless in the depths of my soul, so it wasn’t a shifting spasm. It felt almost like... a phantom strain, a pull across an invisible, frayed thread I didn’t even know existed; the pain was much more bearable and mild.

My heart hammered wildly against my palm, every beat sending a dull, burning sensation through my lungs.

I squeezed my eyes shut, gasping silently into the dark room, curling over my knees as I waited for the unknown agony to pass.

The memory ripped through my mind with the force of a physical blade, tearing open the raw, unhealed scab of the worst night of my life.

The night I would never be able to forget, no matter how far I try to run.

That night.

The night my twin alphas rejected me.

[FLASHBACK}

"You knew it, didn’t you?" I asked, my voice strained and trembling as I looked between Lucas and Logan. My chest heaved, my lungs burning as if I had been swallowing liquid fire. "You knew what we were to each other this whole time... and you didn’t say a word?"

They stood side by side at the foot of the sweeping marble staircase, twin Alphas carved from the same cold, ruthless stone.

Their tall, broad frames blocked out the light from the crystal chandelier above, casting long, dark shadows that completely swallowed me whole.

Neither of them showed a single flicker of shock.
