Adeline’s pov~

Neither of them moved an inch to soothe the violent, golden thrum of the mate-bond that had just sparked to life inside my chest.

It tore through my veins like molten glass, an agonisingly sweet heat that screamed at me to reach out, to touch them, to seek warmth from the very men standing over me like executioners.

"You knew it, didn’t you?" My voice cracked, strained and trembling as I looked between Lucas and Logan. My chest heaved, every ragged breath burning like I was swallowing pure fire.

"You knew what we were to each other this whole time... and you didn’t say a single word?"

"Of course we knew," Lucas said softly. There wasn’t a single flicker of warmth in his dark eyes, his full lips curling into a slow, utterly dismissive sneer.

"We knew the exact second you stepped into this mansion, Adeline. The bond hummed beneath our skin like a fever every single time you walked past us in the hallways, carrying our laundry like a stray dog."

"So why?" I choked out, forcing my knees to hold my weight as I took a single, fragile step forward.

My hands were shaking so violently I had to ball them into tight fists, my short nails biting into my palms.

"Why did you hide it from me?"

Logan took a slow, deliberate step out from the deep shadows of the drawing room, his highborn Alpha aura flaring without a shred of restraint.

The sheer, suffocating pressure slammed into my chest like a falling stone wall, pinning the air inside my lungs and making my legs tremble until I nearly collapsed right then and there.

"Because it is just so absurdly funny how you actually thought we would ever mark you as our Luna," Logan said, his voice chillingly flat, his hand gesturing lazily down at my small, shivering frame.

"Look at you, Adeline. Just take a look at what you are. You seem to have completely forgotten your place in this house. You are wolfless. You are a scentless, pathetic omega raised entirely on our pack’s scraps. Our mother took you in out of pity. Do you honestly believe a girl with ruined, defective blood deserves to sit on a throne beside us? Do you genuinely think the High Concord and the Crescent Pack would ever bow to a Luna who doesn’t even possess a scent?"

"But my wolf—she awakened tonight!" I cried out, the words tearing out of my throat, desperate and raw.

"She’s weak, I know she’s small and quiet, but she’s here! I’m not empty anymore!"

"It doesn’t matter, Adeline," Lucas interjected smoothly, stepping up right beside his twin, their broad shoulders touching in a terrifying display of unified disgust.

"It doesn’t matter if your wolf woke up tonight or if she dies tomorrow morning. It doesn’t change what you lack. A weak link drags down the entire bloodline, and we are built for war, not charity. You are an embarrassing stain on our lineage. Having one mate like you would be a tragedy for an ordinary Alpha. Having two of us bound to a defective maid is an insult to our birthright."

"An insult," Logan echoed, spitting the words at my feet as if the very sound of them made him sick.

"Look at you, cowering on our floor. You’re nothing to us. You’ve never been anything."

The brutal weight of his words settled into my soul, cold and final.

I was nothing.

A ghost in their halls.

A joke shared between twin alphas.

"Fine," I declared, forcing my head up, dragging my gaze off the cold floorboards to look them straight in their golden eyes.

"I don’t want to be your Luna either."

For a second, the room went dead silent. Then, Lucas let out a soft, mocking laugh, followed closely by his brother as they both took a synchronised step toward me.

"What did you just say?" Lucas sneered, tilting his head with dark, malicious amusement.

"Are you seriously telling us right now that you don’t want to be our Luna? Isn’t that a little out of script for a desperate little orphan? You’re a maid who belongs in the mud, Adeline. Don’t act like you’re making a grand sacrifice here."

"Just give me some time," I pleaded, my voice barely holding together against the agonising ache pulsing from the fragile, newly born bond.

"Please. Just give me some time."

"Time for what? So you can keep freeloading in our territory like you’ve done your entire life?" Logan’s voice hissed with pure venom.

"You are absolutely nothing without our family’s name protecting you, Adeline. You love playing the tragic victim, don’t you? But underneath all that quiet innocence, you’re just a desperate, pathetic bitch. The second you felt that spark tonight, you ran straight to us, eager to throw yourself at our feet and claim your prize. You disgust me."

"We knew the bond was there from day one," Lucas added, his tone entirely void of mercy.

"And we have been waiting for the perfect moment to rip it out and throw it away."

"Please..." I whispered, hot, heavy tears finally breaking past my lashes, spilling over my cheeks.

The bond was pulling at my very soul, a beautiful, golden string connecting my heart to theirs, completely unaware that the men on the other end were holding shears.

"I only just felt it... I only just understood why my chest felt like it was breaking whenever you were near. I can’t... I can’t handle it right now. Just give me a few months. Please."

"A few months?" Logan asked, stepping closer until his heavy boots were inches from my toes. "What could a few months possibly change for a defect like you?"

"I can train!" I dropped every last shred of my pride, my voice breaking into a ragged, desperate sob that echoed off the high, vaulted ceiling.

"I can work! I can prepare my body for the shock! Just give me a little time to build enough strength to survive what comes after! A double rejection... my soul can’t manage two Alpha rejections at the same time! I don’t have a strong wolf to shield my heart! I can’t take it all at once!"
