Chapter 615: Chapter 611: Short on Money

After Tristan Grayson left the office, he and Ian Shaw left the company together.

That left Mika Summers as the only executive around, so the remaining employees immediately started to gossip.

Most of them were complaining about how short President Summers’s vacation had been. The thought of no longer being able to see President Shaw every day made them want to cry.

They didn’t have any deep connection with President Shaw, but he was a welcome sight around the company.

Tristan had said he would send Lily Shaw over to help, and true to his word, she arrived at the office in less than half an hour.

Mika Summers glanced at the flustered Lily Shaw, who was panting as she collapsed onto the sofa. Mika chuckled and teased, "What’s the big rush? Are you preparing to go to war?"

"Don’t get me started. It’s all Tristan’s fault! I had just gotten to the Avery Group—hadn’t even sat down yet—when Tristan calls and tells me to get here in half an hour or face the consequences. Mika, you tell me, isn’t he a total bully? It takes forty minutes to get from the Avery Group to Sovereign, easy."

The smile on Mika Summers’s lips grew wider. She glanced at her watch and nodded in approval. "Well, look at that. You’re not late. Exactly half an hour."

"Mika, you have no idea how dangerous that ride was. Aiden Avery drives like a maniac, I swear. I thought I’d never see you again." Seeing Mika’s amused expression, Lily Shaw grumbled again.

"Avery came too?"

"Yeah. How else could I have possibly made it in thirty minutes?" Recalling the breakneck speed of the car, Lily’s heart still hadn’t settled. Aside from that time she was kidnapped, this was probably the most terrifying experience of her life.

Hearing Lily’s words, Mika seemed to recall something. She nodded, then stood up and poured Lily a glass of water. Handing it to her, she said with a smile, "Okay, have some water first. In a bit, I’ll show you some files. For the next few days, you’ll be my temporary assistant."

"Okay, no problem."

"In front of everyone else, we’re boss and subordinate. Don’t be overly friendly with me, or people might get suspicious." As she spoke, she walked back behind her desk, pulled a stack of files from a shelf, and set them on her desk.

"I understand. Don’t worry."

"Okay."

Mika picked up one of the files and stood. The moment she did, Lily shot up from the sofa, walked over, and clutched the stack of documents to her chest, looking ready to get to work.

After stepping out of her office, Mika’s gaze landed on Jasmine Warren, who was seated at a desk in the corner.

Jasmine had clearly seen her too, and the smile that appeared on her face was noticeably stiff.

Mika nodded and called out coolly, "Jasmine, come over here."

"Oh." Jasmine scrambled to her feet, flustered, and started walking toward Mika.

After a few steps, she realized she was being too tense. She made an effort to compose herself, and by the time she reached Mika’s side, she appeared as relaxed and carefree as she always had been around Mika in the past.

Mika smiled, looped an arm through Jasmine’s, and turned her to face their colleagues. "I’m sure you’ve all gotten to know Jasmine by now, so I won’t make a big introduction. However, there’s one thing I want you all to know. Jasmine and I grew up together—we’re practically sisters. Therefore, I don’t want to see anyone here bullying her. If I find out about it, I absolutely will not let it slide."

"Don’t worry, President Summers. We all really like Jasmine, we would never bully her."

"That’s right, we all love having Jasmine here."

...The moment Mika finished speaking, a few female colleagues, recovering from their shock, quickly chimed in with their enthusiastic agreement.

A few of the women even breathed a silent sigh of relief, thankful they hadn’t yet gotten around to bullying the new girl.

Jasmine Warren was utterly stunned by Mika’s speech. The smile on her face had long since vanished, and she could feel her legs starting to tremble.

She wasn’t a coward, but in that moment, facing a woman who was publicly declaring them to be as close as sisters, she felt afraid. She felt a pang of guilt, an unprecedented panic that made her chest tighten.

The feeling left her at a loss for words, but at the same time, it felt like she was beginning to understand something.

’Maybe Mika and I really can’t ever go back to the way things were...’

No matter how pleasant Mika’s words sounded, to Jasmine, who knew her so well, the cracks in her performance were obvious.

"Jasmine, come in with me."

"Okay."

Once inside the office, Lily followed them in. She closed the door and stood obediently to one side, clutching the files.

Mika glanced back at Jasmine, her voice tinged with weariness. "There’s no one else here. Have a seat."

Jasmine Warren nodded, walked over to the sofa, and sat down.

She placed her hands nervously on her lap, her eyes filled with unease.

Mika noticed Jasmine’s unease and decided to speak first. "Jasmine, Ian Shaw told me you started working here the same day he did?"

"Yes, that’s right."

"I thought you said you wanted to work in a hospital. What made you suddenly decide to work at Sovereign?"

Jasmine Warren met her gaze and said flatly, "I heard the pay at Sovereign is good, so I came. And it’s not that easy to get a job at a hospital, anyway."

Mika nodded thoughtfully. "I see. You have a point. Still, this job has nothing to do with your field of study."

"It doesn’t matter if it’s a match or not. As long as it pays, I’m fine."

"Are you short on money?"

Jasmine looked like she’d just heard the funniest joke in the world. A sarcastic smile touched her lips. "Heh, of course I need money. Not everyone gets to marry the richest man in Tridell like you did." Her words were seemingly self-deprecating, but they carried a pointed subtext: ’If you didn’t have Tristan Grayson, wouldn’t you need money, too?’

’She only married Tristan Grayson for his money. It was for money back then, and it’s for money now!’

"How dare you speak to President Summers like that!" Lily, who had been standing to the side, snapped angrily.

"President Summers?" Jasmine savored the title, a cold smile on her face.

’It’s true,’ she thought. ’That one title is enough to draw a clear line between us.’

Mika’s expression darkened. She glanced at Lily and said coolly, "Lily, there’s nothing for you here. Go and get busy."

"But President Summers, I think she’s being hostile toward you."

"That’s impossible. Jasmine and I are best friends; she would never be hostile toward me. Lily, go to President Shaw’s office and get the files organized. We have an important client to see tonight."

"Yes." Lily was still worried, but she complied. ’This is the office, after all,’ she thought. ’It’s not like that woman can do anything to Mika here.’
