Chapter 633: Chapter 625: Again and Again

His feet felt as though they were filled with lead. He couldn’t take a single step.

But his eyes were fixed on that spot.

It was as if he could see Amelia standing there, looking wretched and resentful. She was biting her lip, her eyes filled with hatred for him.

Just as Cassian Jennings was lost in a daze, a car pulled up beside him, and a woman stepped out.

The woman raised her hand and greeted Cassian Jennings with a smile. "Hi, Cassian. I didn’t expect to run into you here. What a coincidence."

Cassian Jennings froze at the sound of her voice. He snapped out of his trance and turned to look at her. When he saw it was Fiona Vance, his cold, gloomy expression slowly softened. He returned her smile. "Long time no see."

Fiona Vance tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and said with a gentle smile, "When did you get back? You didn’t even let me know."

"I just got back today. What are you doing in a place like this?" ’This little alley wasn’t a place a respectable CEO should be visiting.’

Fiona Vance gave a helpless smile. "It’s my daughter. She insisted on getting barbecue from here."

"You have a daughter?" Cassian Jennings asked, his handsome brow furrowing in surprise.

"I do. After we divorced, I adopted a daughter. She’s very sweet. I’ll bring her to meet you someday."

"Okay. I guess I have a daughter too, then."

"Mhm, she’s very well-behaved." At the mention of her daughter, Fiona Vance’s smile was filled with tenderness.

Cassian Jennings didn’t reply, his expression growing a little more complicated.

A touch of melancholy filled Fiona Vance’s heart as well. Forcing a relaxed smile, she exchanged a few more words with Cassian Jennings before heading toward the stall up ahead.

Cassian Jennings averted his gaze, turned, and started walking back the way he had come.

After Cassian Jennings was gone, Fiona Vance glanced back. Seeing no one there except her car, the smile on her lips turned bitter.

「The Avery Residence.」

Aiden Avery watched Amelia Avery lounging lazily on the sofa, his brows knitting together in disapproval.

After a long silence, Amelia finally sat up with a sigh before Aiden could speak. "Bro, if you have something to say, just say it."

"Amelia, be straight with me. What are your intentions with Cassian Jennings? If you like him, I won’t oppose you two getting together anymore. But if you don’t, then you’re getting on a plane and going back first thing tomorrow morning."

It was rare to hear Aiden not object to her being with Cassian, but at this moment, Amelia felt no particular emotion upon hearing it.

She just shook her head. "Bro, you’ve misunderstood. I didn’t come back to get together with him."

"Then what are you planning?" Too much had happened recently. All Aiden wanted now was for the people he cared about to be happy.

"I..." ’Initially, I came back because I was afraid Elias Yates would hurt Cassian. That’s why I had to return. But I never expected Cassian to come back before me, nor did I think he had already given up on me long ago.’

’In truth, she didn’t know how to answer him right now.’

’Maybe she just felt it would be a waste not to come back since the ticket was already booked.’

Aiden was clearly frustrated with her. "Amelia, you might be able to hide those little thoughts of yours from others, but you can’t hide them from your big brother."

"Bro, you’ve really got it wrong."

"Amelia, I’m giving you one night. Think it over carefully: either get back together with Cassian, or go back where you came from." He was tired too, after all these years.

He could also see the pain in Cassian’s heart.

That’s why he wanted to help his brother out, just this once.

Amelia’s eyes welled with tears as she nodded.

"Alright, it’s getting late. You should get some rest."

"Mhm. Goodnight, Bro."

After Aiden went upstairs, Amelia followed him up.

She returned to her bedroom and walked to the balcony out of habit.

She glanced around, and her gaze finally landed on the swing set in the yard.

When she was little, she always liked having the older boys push her on the swing. But in the end, Cassian was always the one she ended up pestering.

It seemed only Cassian had the patience to play with her.

But she also remembered that Cassian was the reason she’d started hating the swing set. He had brought a strange girl to their house and let her sit on what Amelia considered *her* swing. He even pushed the girl on it. From that day on, Amelia hated the swing. Absolutely hated it.

A bitter smile touched her lips as she recalled their childhood memories.

As if possessed, she left her bedroom, went downstairs, and walked out into the yard.

When she reached the swing set, she sat down on one of the swings.

She gripped the ropes on either side and looked up at the night sky.

’If someone were to ask her if she still loved Cassian?’

’The answer was an unequivocal yes. She loved him. Loved him so, so much. It was a love that had seeped into her very bones.’

’She had liked him, loved him, for as long as she could remember.’

’No matter what, she couldn’t *not* love him.’

’But, if they asked if she could forgive him? If they could go on?’

’She thought not. She couldn’t forgive him, and they couldn’t go on.’

’She couldn’t take the repeated blows.’

’She didn’t want him to hate her in the future.’

’Even more so, she didn’t want to live with a man who didn’t love her.’

’Cassian didn’t love her. She knew that. She knew it all too well.’

Outside the Avery villa, Cassian Jennings sat in his car, his gaze fixed on the lit window of a room.

He wanted to go see her, but he didn’t dare.

They were so close. If he just wanted to, he could see her.

He pulled out his phone and stared at the familiar number in his contacts, but he just couldn’t bring himself to press it.

’He never knew there’d be a day when he, Cassian Jennings, would be too afraid to make a move.’

On a sudden impulse, Amelia took out her phone, logged onto QQ, and snapped a photo.

The photo was blurry, but you could still make out what she was doing.

She captioned it with the text: *Suddenly, I really miss being a kid. It would be so nice if people never had to grow up. Then we wouldn’t have any worries or sorrows. Then we could just be happy forever.*

At the exact moment she posted it, Cassian received a notification.

He looked at his phone screen, at the picture of the woman on the swing, her expression full of sorrow.

Reading those heart-wrenching words, a sharp pain shot through his heart.

Images flashed through his mind—memories of the two of them. He remembered how she used to love pestering him to push her on the swing. He couldn’t recall when exactly she had started refusing to play on it.

’She said she missed her childhood... did that mean she missed him, too?’

That thought seemed to ignite a tiny spark of hope in his heart...

He exited the QQ feed, opened his contacts, and called her. The phone had barely rung twice before she picked up.

"Hello?" A cool, detached female voice came through the line.

Hearing that familiar voice he had missed so much, his eyes grew red and his own voice turned hoarse. "Amelia."

"Mmm..."

"I’ve missed you..."
