CHAPTER 53 SECOND NIGHT EVENTAN: Sometimes I wonder... if I could project my face to your side, would it be enough to scare you into clicking that Follow and Favorite button? 🤔
*****
The gentle and resplendent light from the moon illuminated what was left of Westbridge Academy. The night seemed desolate and silent, as the usually roaming undead were nowhere in sight.
At the back of the girls' dorm, Kael and his group stood in silence. The building looked as if it had seen better days, as half of its topmost floor looked as if a monster had taken a bite out of it. The group gripped onto their new treasures, their faces pale, their hands trembling slightly, and their breaths a bit labored, but their eyes shone with quiet resolve.
After thinking about it, and remembering what happened to the group of humans that had appeared in last night's event, Kael and the others decided to use the back of the dorm as a natural barrier. They could only hope it would be able to shield them from most of the monsters' senses. As for hiding like they had done before while praying they survived the night, they knew they couldn't afford to do so. They had just barely managed to close the gap a bit with their endeavor earlier during the day, but if they allowed these monsters to grow and leave them further behind, then they really would be doomed. Especially with the buffs the creatures had on top of their unusual growth speed.
It seemed old technology was now suppressed, as they couldn't even read the time with their watches as they did before. But they didn't need to. They could all tell the time was imminent.
Taking a deep breath, Kael summoned his status page.

After thinking about it, he decided to add his free stats equally into his agility and mind stats. The reason for that?
With a tug of his intentions, three bursts of light sparkled around him as a pair of black gauntlets with crimson markings adorned his now restored hands. At the same time, a black earring appeared on his right ear. Together with his unkempt hair and the shorts, which were the only clothing he wore, Kael had a wild yet imposing presence.
With the addition of his two new treasures, Kael's stats now looked like this:
Strength: 27 (+5)
Agility: 20
Vitality: 20 (+5)
Mind: 23 (+2)
Energi: 45/45 (Unique)
Despite how impressive his stats now looked compared to his actual level, Kael couldn't help but think of his weaknesses.
He could not fight by himself and had to depend on Combat Trance.
He also relied too much on the system on how to use his skills. He could still remember how the Primordial Instinct had used his powers.
Forge your strength!
Those words resounded in his mind once more, echoing like a hammer striking molten steel, steady and unyielding, and Kael thought of many ways to embark on that path.
But, for tonight, he would focus on surviving.

At the same time, in a quiet room in the main building, Elena watched as their group of now almost sixty tried to manage their emotions, each in their own way.
The heat was almost unbearable considering how congested the space was, many of them already sweating, and the smell almost suffocating. However, it was unclear if this was entirely a result of the heat, or was also in part caused by their fear. As for the smell, no one was in the state of mind to care for such a minor inconvenience when their survival was in question.
Elena watched as Principal Martin went through the plan once again while also motivating the group. But Elena knew many of them might not live to see the sun a few hours from now. But she didn't care. What mattered to her was surviving and growing stronger. Only then could she make those people pay. She could only pray they were alive---if not, she really didn't know what she would do.
She turned her head to the figure directly beside her, and after a brief flash of hesitation in her eyes, she pointed a finger at Rachel. A cooling wave washed over the young girl as her sweat slowly crystallized before shattering into tiny particles. At the same time, the slight trembling in her arms subsided.
"Thank you," Rachel whispered as she clung to her backpack with one hand, and gripped an iron bar in the other.
Elena didn't reply and merely continued to gaze at her. After some time, she sighed before speaking.
"Just stick by my side."
Rachel's pale face snapped towards her, the darkness in her eyes lighting up slightly.
"Thank you... thank you so much." She had been wondering if she had made a mistake leaving Kael's group. She could have remained hidden in the bathroom, but here she was, about to be thrust into what she had been trying her best to avoid.
But seeing the strongest person among their group show the intention to protect her made her nerves relax slightly.
Elena didn't respond and merely turned her head back forward, the cold look returning to her face.
The seconds slowly passed, the sound of heavy breathing resounding in the room.
After some time, a message suddenly flashed before the eyes of everyone.
[SPECIAL NIGHT EVENT STARTING...]
Elena held her breath, her hands tightening into fists.
[Darkness awakens what the day suppresses]
[Night creatures have been summoned]
Elena could hear the loud beating of her heart merging with the others, sounding like war drums pounding in a battlefield.
The bravado she had raised slowly crumbled.
Despite how powerful her talent was, Elena knew that she was still weak compared to the true horrors out there. So a part of her had always hoped that no creature would be summoned to them, after all, the system had clearly said the summoning would be random.
And it seemed she wasn't the only one clinging to such hope.
Outside, and under the pale moonlight, a line of sweat slid down the side of Kael's face as he prayed they wouldn't have to battle this night.
Alas...
The sound of reality tearing apart like glass being shattered across the sky eventually drifted into his ears.
Kael released the breath he had been holding, the erratic beating of his heart slowly settling into a cold, steady rhythm, like a war drum before the clash.
'Then fight it is!'
