*****

A crack in space hung suspended within the school premises, crimson mist soon billowing out from its depths.

Kael, Alice, and Nathan peeked their heads out from the side, their eyes widening at the sight.

- Thud!

A hoof landed on the ground, the sound so deep it was almost as if a giant had taken a step.

With a slight flex of its muscles, a creature soon appeared in their sight, its dark coat bristling in the silent night wind. It was a stallion three meters tall with a crimson horn jutting out from the middle of its head, its end tapering into a sharp point that glistened beneath the moonlight.

The creature opened its muzzle, crimson mist spilling out as if they had been caged within. A long, tattered tail lashed behind it, snapping through the air like a bloody whip. Red eyes swept across the surroundings before the creature shifted to the side.

One after another, more of these massive stallions came out until their numbers reached close to fifty.

Kael's breath seized.

The word RARE almost overwhelmed Kael's vision. There were simply no creatures of the common rank among these group of evolved beasts.

Yet, what truly made Kael feel despair was the group of four who emerged last.

[FIRST ORDER (LV 25) RUINSTEED KING (EPIC)]

Kael and the others remained frozen on the spot, their eyes trained on the last monster.

It was their first time seeing a First Order. A being in a higher realm of power than them. The system didn't deem to give a special name for those between level 1 to level 24, and simply called them Awakened collectively. But before them was a creature that had passed that watershed.

There was an oppressive aura surrounding the creature despite it merely standing there. Despite being a level 25 epic beast, it was smaller than the others, only a bit above two meters in height.

A regal crimson mane cascaded from the back of its head down its spine, fluttering like blood-red flames in the wind, and its hooves were deep red as opposed to the others' black. Its eyes glowed with a crimson light, one that didn't look deranged but instead appeared calm while still being no less intimidating.

With a slight raise of its head, the creature bellowed, a deep sound reverberating out of its mouth. But what came out wasn't the usual neigh one would expect from its appearance.

Instead, a primal bellow rolled through the air like collapsing mountains.

The other massive ruinsteeds raised their heads before following their leader's lead as a warped neigh tore through the air as if announcing their arrival.

Kael could not understand why the highest leveled creature among them was an epic rank. Wasn't it supposed to be harder for those of higher classes to advance? But that was clearly not the case here. Even the elite rank didn't seem to follow that rule.

He had not really paid attention to the levels of the centipede creatures that appeared the previous night. No one in their right mind would have enough clarity to study such monsters after seeing them for the first time and realizing they would have to live among such horrors.

However, he didn't have time to ponder on this for long, as it seemed the stallions' greeting had not been well received.

The sound started as shuffling footsteps before escalating into a frantic, rhythmic scraping of countless claws against asphalt.

Soon, one zombie after another appeared out of the darkness nestling within the main building.

Kael and the others had already switched positions to the other side of the building before peeking their heads out once again. After all, they had to learn about the monsters they would potentially face for their plan to work.

But what they saw made Kael's brow furrow.

The levels were not what surprised him this time, at least not much. What he was seeing was not much different from what he observed when the zombies had retreated after the battle last night. He had always known the zombies they had faced earlier during the day were among the weaker of the bunch.

Instead, what surprised him was that their numbers were smaller. And that too by no small amount.

It must be remembered that at the peak of the battle last night, there had been more than a thousand zombies, and while many of them had left after the fight, the majority of them should still be concentrated within the school.

Yet the horde of undead barely reached two hundred.

It just didn't add up.

'Something is wrong.'

Kael had this thought. He just felt it in his gut, a cold prickling of unease crawling down his spine, whispering that the missing numbers were far more terrifying than the monsters standing before him.

But once again, he wouldn't have time to dwell on such a discrepancy.

- ROAR!

- ROAR!

The Crawlers released deep growls as the zombies below level 25 they controlled erupted forward into a charge, their hungry snarls filling the night and their crimson eyes illuminating the darkness.

Kael noticed how the undead in the First Order, even those of the common rank, appeared more collected than usual.

But once again, he knew he didn't have time to waste dwelling on it.

This was their best chance to act.

The zombies rushing forward, despite being far higher leveled than their group, were still enemies they had a slight chance against. The great bulk of them were between level 17-20.

On the other side of the field, the Ruinsteed King gave a command, and soon after, the almost fifty stallions raised their forelimbs to the sky, their hooves reflecting the gentle rays of the moon.

With another roar, their front hooves stomped onto the ground.

- BOOOOOOOM!

- RUMBLE

A wave of earth spread outward, sending the approaching horde flying in different direction, the shocking blast of wind shattering windows into glittering fragments.
