ENERGI: THE PRIMORDIAL CONDUIT[OP MC, APOCALYPSE, SURVIVAL, AND LITRPG]
CHAPTER 66: HEATED CHASEIt was already several hours deep into the night, yet the battle outside continued to rage.
The principal's face was pale, his eyes downcast, as he gazed at his hands that trembled ever so slightly.
Faces of his students flashed within his mind. Their cries, their pleas, their mangled bodies.
He had been the one to ask for their cooperation, and he had promised he would try his best to guarantee their survival.
Had he been arrogant?
The lines on his face deepened, and his back hunched slightly, as he released a sigh and closed his eyes, the wrinkles at their sides becoming more pronounced.
Only now did the noise around him enter his senses.
"Sob... my junior sister. She's dead, my little sister is gone!"
"We would have escaped if not because of her."
"I lost my girlfriend.... ahhh..."
Sobs and screams of anger drifted into his ears, but they were buried under the sounds of explosions from outside.
Many glared at Elena's unconscious body beside him, and some were even trying to gather the consent of others to attack the weakened girl.
But Martin didn't stop them. He didn't have the heart to do so. After all...
He had let them down.
However, disappointing them was one thing, the burden of which he wouldn't hesitate to carry on his frail shoulders, but allowing them to harm a student of his in her most vulnerable state was another.
Honestly, a part of him was also angry at Elena, but he didn't feel he had the right to be. Not to mention, without the girl's outburst, many of those here wouldn't have survived. And that was what was ironic, considering many of those who had the potential to survive had been killed by her attack.
The principal shook his head and focused his attention on something else. Something important. The night event had yet to finish, and they could not let their guard down in the slightest.
With a shift of his intention, he opened the newly unlocked system shop.
A message flashed before him, before an array of items appeared in his vision.
The principal's eyes widened slightly at the sight.
Many of what was listed before him could change everything, could increase the chances of their survival by more than fifty percent.
There were skills of different kinds, mana enhanced firearms, even bombs, and mundane weapons that had been strengthened by the enigmatic energy and would prove effective against those abominations out there.
Alas, each and every one of the listed items was expensive, so expensive they bordered on impossible, at least for someone with his skills.
He shifted his eyes and noticed Daniel, Ben, Iris, and their groups, who were more composed, also seemed to be focused on the system shop as they looked lost in space.
He checked the coins he had and almost winced at the pitiful amount. Without a choice, he could only settle to buy ten potions which were more affordable, though they were of lower ranks.
At the same time, he bought several bottles of water which were directly summoned before him, before clattering to the ground. With his inventory now filled, this was the best he could wish for.
He stood up, his old bones groaning and protesting, and handed each and every person their water.
Barely a few thanked him, and he could even sense the hatred and blame directed at him from some of the students. But he took them all in without a word.
Done, he returned to his position, about to sit down, when the middle schooler who had remained on his other side suddenly paled. His seated body fell sideways to the ground and he seemed to experience some kind of seizure.
Principal Martin's eyes widened. He knew what that reaction meant. And the boy's next words confirmed it.
"C-coming... we die... run..."
"TO ME!" Not even a second later, the principal roared with all his might and with such force his windpipe almost burst.
But it seemed to have done the job.
The students who were still feeling panicky almost lost their minds from the abrupt scream. But when they saw the principal quickly hunch down before carrying the middle schooler under one armpit and Elena under the other, some of them ran towards him, despite the questions plaguing their minds.
Alas, not all of them did.
Those who harbored negative feelings against the old man looked at the gathering group with silent questions even as they raised their guard.
Daniel was just about to ask the old man what was going on, when the latter turned his now red eyes towards the rooted students.
"MOVE CL-"
The principal's mind almost stilled as a different sound of explosion drifted into his senses. One of a body ramming into walls and obstacles, and it seemed to be getting closer.
His class skill was cast instantly.
A portal appeared directly below him before spreading out under those in his immediate surroundings.
Two teardrops fell, as the old man looked at the hardheaded students who seemed to have realized the situation they were in.
But they were too late.
A crawler blinked into the room, its eerie blue eyes glowing with a disturbing light.
Those running stood transfixed on the spot as they were sent into illusions of their greatest nightmare. The principal barely caught sight of this scene before he disappeared.
The crawler which had just appeared roared in anger, foul-smelling spittle flying out of its disgusting lips. Its body pivoted as it collided with the three students caught in illusion, their weak frames bursting into a bloody mist.
It barely touched the ground before its hulking frame was propelled forward, smashing into the side of the wall and out of the classroom. It had already locked onto the principal, and its prey wouldn't escape from it. Not tonight.
The chase had started.
The principal and his group barely appeared in a classroom two or three rooms away from their previous location.
The others around the old man almost collapsed as they threw out the water they had ingested barely a minute ago, while the principal himself was experiencing a myriad of emotions.
If it wasn't for the new trait he unlocked that now allowed him to teleport to places he had been before, though the restriction on distance with his normal teleportation had remained the same while the mana consumption even increased, wouldn't they have all died in that classroom?
The thought had barely formed when he felt the boy's body under his armpit still trembling. And he didn't think it was because of the effects of his class skill. And he was proven right in the next moment, as the sound of a body smashing through a wall not far from them echoed loudly once again. He could hear faint snarls mixed with the sounds of collision.
His senses barely picked all these up when a purple light flashed within the room, and a portal appeared beneath them.
Just in time as the creature blinked into existence right before them.
Alas, they escaped its grasp once again.
- ROOOOAR!
The creature bellowed once again, but this time, it didn't care to use the side entrance. Its body directly barreled through walls, as it chased after the group.
The principal appeared inside another room. Without a care for those around him puking their guts out, he brought out a mana potion before chugging it down.
At the same time, he activated his skill.
- ROAR!
A bright purple flash!
- ROOOOAR!
- BOOOM!
A bright purple flash!
- ROAR!
After just using three potions, the principal felt his body already reacting. A nauseating dizziness assaulted his senses, his organs feeling as though they were being wrung dry from the inside.
But he gritted his teeth and forced his skill into action once again, the others already unconscious at this point.
Another purple flash!
Another angry roar!
The thudding sounds of bodies hitting the ground from the forceful teleportation.
The booming sounds of the approaching monster colliding against walls!
Purple flash!
Roar!
Thuds!
And repeat.
And repeat.
The principal had reached his limit, but the sight and burden of his unconscious students around him allowed him to break through the ceiling again and again. More than once, the system informed him of an upgrade to his skill, which was part of the reason he was able to continue even till now.
Still, he was only human.
He was tired.
His old frame appeared more shriveled, but he didn't hesitate.
A purple flash!
Roar!
Thuds!
Booom ...?
The principal's actions were almost robotic at this point. He was just about to teleport once more when his weakened senses barely realized he didn't hear booming sounds.
He stood there for several seconds, his chest heaving, his breathing coming out in rough pants, and black spots filling his vision.
After a minute passed and he felt nothing, he couldn't hold it anymore and fell to the ground unconscious.
Outside, the crawler which had entered the main building came back into the open as it roared in anger, the light of explosions from the battlefield lighting its massive silhouette that looked like a nightmare carved out of darkness and blood.
It had given up on the chase.
Now it could only turn to other options.
Its senses locked onto Kael who was rampaging around two of its kind, and it erupted into motion.
It would just have to make do with the others.
