The ruined world had become a silent witness to their battle. The buildings surrounding the central square had been reduced to even greater ruins, as if that was still even possible.
Every collision between Clyde and the white serpent sent shockwaves through the area. When red and blue-white lightning collided, the resulting explosions pushed debris away from the battlefield in all directions.
After several more exchanges, the area within several hundred meters of the square had been almost completely cleared. Broken concrete, metal, glass, and pieces of buildings pushed and scattered far into the distance.
The white serpent was covered in wounds. A long gash stretched across the left side of its body. Blood poured continuously from its eyes, running down its pale face and dripping from its jaws. One of its wings had been torn badly, while its tail had been severed by Clyde’s sword. But the monster was still alive, and its fighting spirit was still burning.
Clyde was not much better.
Blood covered his face, mixing with scratches and burns across his skin. His clothes were torn apart in several places. One of his ribs was broken, and every breath sent a dull pain through his chest. His magical energy was also running dangerously low.
And yet Clyde was grinning. It was a savage smile. He was enjoying this.
How could he not? For so long, his anger had been buried beneath his calm face, after everything he had endured. The Higher Beings were still beyond his reach, but this monster had given him something else.
Something he could hit. Something he could hurt, and still refused to die no matter how many times he struck it. Clyde had poured his fury into every slash.
Now they stood several dozen meters apart.
The white serpent stared at him with its remaining strength, its crimson eyes filled with pure killing intent.
Clyde stared back. The monster had already gambled everything. It no longer cared whether it lived or died. It would either kill Clyde or die trying.
Clyde understood that perfectly. So he would do the same.
He had already spent an enormous amount of stamina and magical power killing the other nine serpents before. If he had fought this creature first, he might have had a significant advantage.
But there was no point thinking about that now.
Clyde lowered his sword. Then he dashed forward.
Fire and lightning erupted around his body at the same time. Flames wrapped around his limbs and blue-white lightning crawled across his skin and sword.
The white serpent lunged at the same time.
They collided again.
The impact shook the entire square again.
The serpent opened its jaws and tried to crush Clyde with its teeth, but Clyde slipped beneath its head and drove his sword upward.
The blade slashed across its already wounded body.
The serpent roared. Clyde followed immediately. His movements became faster.
The serpent was losing stamina quickly. Clyde could see it. Its attack became slower and its movement looked like it had become more desperate.
Clyde stepped inside its range and swung his sword toward its face. The blade struck one of its eyes, exploding blood in the air.
The serpent shrieked. Its head whipped sideways, but Clyde did not retreat. He chased it instead, his sword burning with fire and lightning.
Another slash hit the other eye. The serpent screamed louder and thrashed wildly.
Its jaws snapped toward Clyde, but he slipped beneath them and moved around its head.
Then he raises his burning hand and erupts fire directly against the serpent’s remaining eye.
The fire engulfed its face. The creature’s shriek echoed through the ruined city as it desperately twisted its head and beat its remaining wing.
Clyde continued feeding flames into the wound.
The serpent’s pale scales blackened around its eye. Blood boiled beneath the fire, and red lightning erupted wildly from the ruined organ before finally fading.
The monster lost its balance and collapsed onto the broken ground.
It writhed violently, its claws scraping against the concrete as it tried to force itself upright.
But it could not.
Clyde stood several meters away, breathing heavily.
The white serpent was still alive but it no longer rose to attack.
Clyde watched the white serpent for several moments. He did not attack immediately because his own body had reached its limit as well.
His muscles trembled from exhaustion and his magical energy had almost completely drained. There was no reason to waste what little strength remained when his opponent was already incapable of fighting.
The serpent continued to twitch on the ground. Its enormous body occasionally convulsed, but it could no longer rise. Its destroyed eyes and countless wounds had left it helpless.
Clyde waited. After several minutes, his breathing finally became steadier. Some of his strength had returned.
He slowly walked toward the serpent.
The creature noticed him. Its body twitched weakly, and a faint, agonized sound escaped from its throat. But it made no attempt to attack.
Clyde stopped beside its enormous head, and looked down at it for a moment.
"You fought well," Clyde said. Lightning slowly gathered around his sword, crawling across the blade with blue-white arcs. "I’ll end your suffering."
Clyde raised the sword. Then he drove it straight through the serpent’s skull.
The blade pierced through bone and sank deep into its brain, a moment later lightning immediately surged through the sword.
The blue-white lightning spread inside the creature’s head, tearing through its remaining nerves and destroying what little life remained inside.
The serpent convulsed, just one time, then it became completely still.
Clyde pulled his sword free. A familiar notification appeared before his eyes.
[You have defeated White-Winged Serpent.]
[Level Up: 121]
Clyde stared at the notification for several seconds.
"Level 121..." A faint smile appeared on his exhausted face. At least the battle had been worth it.
He was expecting to get a new skill to add to his arsenal or maybe a new weapon, but he only got EXP. But that was still good enough.
