Black Rose was preparing to step into her gaming pod when her doors burst open and Cindra rushed in with her tablet. She barely reacted to this, knowing Cindra was probably running to show her some crazy story that happened in Evolution Online.

She didn’t think anything would be able to move her anymore, after the fact that her worst nemesis and the most infamous Slime in the world had casually teamed up with her most talented new recruit and the man the world rumored to be her boyfriend—that thought alone made her want to punch a hole through a wall.

Even if it was to evade the guild’s rules, she was still weirded out that he’d actually admitted to being in a relationship with her. Then he’s flying across three strongholds to get to her, ignoring the dangers, for an expedition he didn’t even know much about.

Wasn’t that just... weird?

Or was she overthinking it?

"Rose, you won’t believe the clip that’s circulating online right now!" Cindra screamed at the top of her lungs.

"Cindra, I’m not in the mood. Go away—" Black Rose said with a lack of interest, when Cindra interrupted her.

"I think it’s Idris. It has to be him."

"What? Give it to me." Black Rose said louder than she’d expected and quickly snatched the tablet from her, earning her a suspicious side glance from her friend, before she coughed and changed her tone to her usual stoic. "I mean, let me see what you’re talking about." She said and ’nonchalantly’ looked at the clip on display, when her expression immediately changed.

It was a slightly blurred video captured by an ultra-zoom camera, showing millions of crackling swords suspended midair, surrounding a group of winged beasts that were surrounding a jet in the sky.

The first thing that came to her mind, seeing the control over the millions of swords as they tore through the beast horde the next moment, was that whoever was using the ability must have an incredibly dense mana to pull that off.

That was when it clicked with her, and she finally noticed why Cindra thought it might be Idris.

Idris was already known for his incredibly dense mana from his aptitude test, which he later confirmed was his Talent: Infinite Mana.

Idris was the only person she could think of capable of pulling that off, even though she never expected it to be on that scale, making the young man’s ability even scarier.

Also, Idris had literally told her he’d make it from Stronghold 5 to Stronghold 1 in 24 hours, and the video was taken from Stronghold 4, which was on the path while traveling from one of the strongholds to the other.

All the evidence simply pointed to Idris.

He wasn’t joking.

Seeing the scale of the power display strangely made her feel nervously excited. Maybe because that was literally her guild member showing the world the White Vanguard Guild was king.

And the first half of the video she watched in silence as the jet subdued the threat and kept moving like nothing happened. When the jet suddenly plunged downwards, no one could explain what had happened, when the jet stabilized once more but was flying strangely.

That was when everyone watched the door suddenly kick open and something—or someone—was sucked out into the wind, then the propeller blew up.

Everything happened so fast that even after slowing the video down, no one could tell what was happening with the jet as it plunged downwards once more.

Black Rose felt her heart skip a beat, but it didn’t show on her face as she calmly watched as the jet once again stabilized itself with one wing, telling her an external force was in action, but she didn’t have time to keep analyzing when a man flew out of the plane and just hovered around the plane, confusing everyone who was watching.

Black Rose immediately zoomed in to the max on the clip, and from the silhouette of the man, she could confirm that was indeed Idris, and she could also tell he was looking for something.

That led her to the thesis that the jet was being attacked by an unseen enemy, and had probably taken out a few people inside the jet, just like the person that had been sucked out, and probably the pilot, which explained the plane’s erratic movement.

She never knew he had any ability that let him fly smoothly at a high altitude, but that didn’t matter now as she frowned deeply on seeing him exposing himself to the attacker.

That was simply a foolish move in her opinion, even if he might be trying to distract the attacker, he wasn’t indestructible.

Unless he actually was. Idris had proven to be even more mysterious of a man than the infamous Kaelen Cross, and for some reason they had so much in common.

But she wasn’t here to think about that.

’Idris, I hope you know what you’re doing—’ she was talking to herself when the figure in the sky suddenly went limp and dropped down to the wasteland.

She felt her heart drop to her stomach with him.

There was no doubt about it... the silent killer beast had gotten him.

Black Rose refused to believe that was the end. He probably had more tricks up his sleeves. He was only playing dead to catch the silent killer beast off guard, right?

... Right?

The jet didn’t wait or stop. It kept moving in a straight line until it disappeared from sight.

The jet had successfully made it across with whoever was still in it. But at what cost?

The sound of a jet passing overhead suddenly filled the area, and the two girls ran out to see the exact same battered private jet from the video, pulling into Stronghold 1 successfully, flanked by two awakeners from the stronghold’s forces.

"Do you think he somehow made it?" Cindra asked disheartenedly, but got no reply. When she turned around, Black Rose was nowhere to be found.

As soon as the private jet pulled into the hangar, President Hunter stepped out with the two surviving hostesses, who all had ashen expressions, but his eyes widened in surprise when he saw her already waiting at the hangar.

"Uncle?" Black Rose called out in surprise, before she quickly looked behind him.

President Hunter saw this and felt even more broken that he had let the last of the Cross descendants die on his watch.

"I’m sorry, Rose..."

"W-What?" Her eyes widened in shock. "I... killed him."

If she hadn’t asked him to come to Stronghold 1, none of it would have happened.

"...I killed another innocent person."

***

While the world was mourning the death of the mysterious prodigy, far into the wasteland, a group of shady figures dressed in strange outfits and carrying strange weapons closed in on an area covered by a cloud of dust to inspect the human their leader had shot down from the sky.

They didn’t bother to approach cautiously, as they’d seen firsthand what their team leader could do and doubted anyone would ever survive such an attack to the chest.

That was when the dust cleared up and their vision improved. But what they saw next made them frown in confusion. Not only was their target missing from the spot, but there was something else they never accounted for seeing.

"What the hell is that thing?"

"You don’t have to worry about that. It’s the weakest beast in this world. I think the humans call it..."

"...A Slime."

"..."

That’s right.
