Extra's Path: The Eternal Frost Monarch

The abomination suddenly stopped. Its enormous body remained motionless for several seconds. Then, for the first time, it spoke.

The voice was deep and distorted, as though several different voices were speaking through the same throat.

"YOU..."

Its enormous head slowly turned to the side. Then it stopped. That single crimson eye shifted back toward Noah.

"YOU ARE THE SAME HUMAN WHO WAS WITH HIM...THE CHILD BLESS BY SUN"

Noah froze. His pupils contracted. A chill ran through his entire body.

’He... he’s the same one.’

Noah remembered. That night in the dungeon. He and Damien had fought that grotesque creature with pale, oily skin. The monster hadn’t been acting on its own.

Something else had spoken through its body. Something that knew about Damien. Something that had called him the one blessed by the Sun God.

Noah had never forgotten that voice. And now it was standing before him.

’This thing is involved in all of this.’

His thoughts raced. ’It wants to kill Akari. But why?’

He wondered. Was it because she had completely awakened her dragon bloodline?

’Does her awakening pose some kind of threat to it?’

There were still too many questions. The dragon who had trapped Akari here couldn’t have been this creature. Akari had been imprisoned in this isolated region for decades.

The dragon had deliberately created the labyrinth. It had built the circular platform. It had carved the strange runes. And somehow, those runes had reacted when Akari finally awakened her bloodline completely.

That reaction had opened the portal.

’So the dragon created the conditions for this creature to appear. But why?’

Noah couldn’t understand. Then another thought struck him. His eyes widened.

’Damien.’

Damien had been the one who was supposed to come here. If everything had gone according to whatever plan existed. Damien would have entered this place.

He would have encountered Akari. And now he would have been standing here instead of Noah.

’Was this creature supposed to fight Damien?’

Noah’s expression became grim.

’And did that dragon deliberately arrange everything so Akari and Damien would eventually face this thing together?’

The possibility sent another chill through him. But before Noah could think any further.

"DON’T THINK SO DEEPLY ABOUT THIS, HUMAN."

The abomination’s voice dragged him back to reality. Its enormous foot moved.

THUD!!!

The ground shook beneath Noah’s feet. It took another step.

THUD!!!

Dust and mud jumped from the earth. The creature lowered its head slightly.

"I REMEMBER YOU."

Its enormous hand slowly rose.

"YOU WERE THE ONE WHO DELIVERED THE FINAL BLOW TO MY PUPPET."

Noah’s face paled.

"Shit..."

The creature’s palm opened.

Squelch.

Dozens of tentacles erupted from its arm. They twisted through the air like living serpents.

Noah’s eyes widened. More than thirty of them shot toward him simultaneously.

They came from above, from the sides, from behind. There was nowhere to run.

’Too many!’

Noah forced his remaining mana into his body.

BOOM!

Multiple thick walls of ice erupted around him, one after another.

CRACK!

The first wall shattered.

BOOM!

The second was pierced by it and dissolved.

CRACK! CRACK!

The remaining barriers collapsed almost instantly.

Noah gritted his teeth.

’I can’t dodge all of them!’

The tentacles closed in. They were close to kill him, or rather erode him.

CRACKLE!!!

A blue flash suddenly tore through the stormy sky.

Noah’s eyes widened.

SHKKK!!!

A streak of blue lightning appeared directly before him, then another and another. Multiple lightning-colored trajectories flashed through the air so quickly that Noah could barely follow them.

The approaching tentacles were suddenly sliced apart.

SLASH! SLASH! SLASH!

Chunks of corrupted flesh fell around Noah. The severed tentacles writhed briefly before dissolving into the mud.

Noah stood frozen. He couldn’t even see who had attacked. All he could hear was the continuous crackling of lightning.

Something was moving. Something impossibly fast. More blue streaks flashed across the battlefield.

Every tentacle that approached Noah was cut apart before reaching him. Then the lightning reached the abomination’s arm.

SHKKKK!!!

A blue slash passed through its enormous limb. The massive arm was severed as cleanly as if it had been made of butter.

BOOOOM!!!

The arm crashed into the ground. The abomination roared.

"ARGHHHHH!!!"

Its enormous eye turned toward the sky.

"YOU FINALLY CAME!"

The creature’s voice shook with fury.

"STORM DRAGON!!!"

Noah’s eyes widened.

’Storm Dragon...’

A powerful pressure suddenly descended upon the battlefield. The rain itself seemed to bend around something. A blue silhouette hovered in the storm-filled sky.

A woman. She wore a deep-blue kimono, though the transformation had torn through the fabric around her back.

Two enormous dark-sapphire wings extended from her shoulders. They looked almost like crystalline wings beneath the flashes of lightning. But they were made by her dragon transformation.

Two dark horns with a faint blue sheen curved from her head. Her eyes glowed with an intense azure light. Vertical pupils stared down coldly at the abomination below.

Her presence alone made the surrounding air tremble. She was taller than Noah remembered—nearly 188 centimeters in her current awakened form or maybe more.

In her right hand was a katana. Blue lightning crawled continuously along its blade.

Crackle... crackle...

The woman slowly descended through the rain. Her expression was completely different from the gentle Akari Noah knew.

There was no warmth, no smile, no softness. He face was full of cold, terrifying composure.

Noah stared at her for several seconds. Then he swallowed.

"...Akari."

She didn’t look at him. Her entire attention remained fixed on the abomination. The creature’s severed arm was already beginning to regenerate.

Flesh crawled over the wound. The abomination snarled.

"YOU..."

Akari raised her katana. Blue lightning intensified around the blade.

BOOOOOOM!!!

A thunderclap erupted overhead.

Noah immediately understood something. This was no longer a fight he could participate in. The pressure radiating from both beings was overwhelming.

Even standing nearby made his body tremble. He slowly stepped backward.

Then another step.

’Nope. Absolutely not.’

He turned around.

"I’ve done enough. I tried enough."

His body was already covered in wounds. His mana was dangerously low. His shoulder had decomposed flesh.

And these two monsters.

No, these two beings were far beyond anything he could currently handle. Even standing close to them was sucide.

Noah started running.

’This isn’t a battle between mortals anymore.’

BOOOOOOM!!!

Lightning and corrupted energy collided. The forest shook violently.

Noah didn’t look back.

’If I stay anywhere near them, I’ll die from the shockwaves before I even get a chance to run.’

He poured whatever mana remained into his legs. He glanced over his shoulder for one brief moment.

She stood alone before the enormous abomination, lightning surrounding her like a living storm.

"I’m going to leave the monster to you."

Akari moved.

BOOOOM!!!

A streak of blue lightning exploded through the rain.

She disappeared from her position and reappeared directly in front of the abomination, moving so quickly that one couldn’t even follow her movement with normal eyes.

Her katana flashed.

SHIIING!!!

A razor-thin arc of blue lightning sliced across the creature’s enormous torso. The abomination’s flesh split open.

SQUELCH!

Dark, corrupted blood sprayed outward as a deep wound appeared across its body. The creature staggered backward.

"GRRRRAAAAAHHH!!!"

Akari didn’t give it a chance to recover, another flash.

BOOM!

She appeared at its side, another slash.

SHRAAAK!!!

The creature’s thick arm was cut open from shoulder to elbow. Akari vanished again.

CRACKLE!!!

A flash of blue lightning appeared behind the abomination. Her katana struck downward.

BOOOOM!!!

The impact drove the creature several meters into the ground.

Noah stopped running and stared for a moment before shaking his head.

’She’s way too fast.’

Then he continued running. The battlefield behind him had already become a disaster. Dark clouds covered the sky, while blue lightning continuously gathered around Akari.

KRA-KOOOOOM!!!

Lightning suddenly rained from the heavens. One bolt struck a cluster of smaller monsters crawling out of the crimson portal.

BOOM!!!

They were instantly incinerated. Another bolt descended.

BOOOOM!!!

A second group vanished in a burst of blue-white lightning.

Noah kept running.

’She’s controlling the lightning...’

He glanced upward. Another bolt appeared directly above him. His heart jumped.

"Wait—"

The lightning suddenly changed direction.

CRACK!!!

It struck a monster several meters behind him instead. The creature had been preparing to pounce on Noah, but the lightning vaporized it before it could move.

Noah blinked.

"...She deliberately avoided me?"

He looked toward the sky. Akari was already fighting the abomination again. She didn’t look in his direction.

Yet every lightning strike that descended near Noah seemed to avoid him by a deliberate margin. Another monster rushed from the trees.

ROAR!!!

Noah raised his sword. But before he could attack.

KRA-BOOOOM!!!

A bolt struck directly between them. The monster disappeared in an instant.

Noah’s hair stood on end from the static. He stared at the smoking ground.

"...Okay."

A small smile appeared on his exhausted face. ’She’s protecting me.’

That realization gave him a strange sense of relief. But the situation remained catastrophic. The lightning strikes were becoming more frequent.

BOOM!

Others struck the ground several meters away.

CRACK!

Trees caught fire despite the rain. The flames spread rapidly through the dry branches and undergrowth, feeding on the chaos created by the battle.
