Extra's Path: The Eternal Frost Monarch
Chapter 290: Lightning-Storm Dragon [2]Akari moved through the storm like a streak of blue lightning.
Every time she disappeared, a flash of light followed. She reappeared somewhere else a moment later, her katana cutting through the abomination’s corrupted flesh before she vanished again.
Yet despite her overwhelming speed, her expression remained tense.
’What is this thing?’
She narrowly avoided one of its enormous tentacles. The corrupted flesh brushed against the edge of her kimono.
Hissss!
The fabric instantly began to dissolve.
Akari’s eyes narrowed. Even a brief touch is enough to decompose matter.
She looked at her katana.
The blade was still glowing with blue lightning, but small portions of its surface had already begun to deteriorate whenever it came into contact with the creature’s body.
’My sword won’t last much longer either.’
She clicked her tongue. This was a serious problem. She could feel it clearly now.
The creature wasn’t simply powerful. Its very existence was dangerous. Even her own raw destructive powers might not be able to kill it.
Even approaching it made the instincts she had gained from her awakened bloodline scream at her to be cautious.
And Noah, her thoughts briefly shifted toward the young man who had been fighting this thing alone.
’What you did was incredibly foolish.’
A faint smile almost appeared on her lips.
’But... it actually helped me.’
Akari remembered what had happened after she completely awakened her bloodline.
The moment the final restraint broke, an overwhelming amount of power had flooded through her body.
It wasn’t simply an increase in strength. It was as if something ancient had awakened alongside her bloodline.
Her senses had become sharper. Her body had transformed. Her connection to lightning and storms had reached a completely different level.
But she hadn’t been prepared for the sheer intensity of it.
Her consciousness had been swallowed by the storm.
At first, she had tried to resist. Then her thoughts had become fragmented. Her emotions disappeared one by one.
And eventually, she felt as though she were no longer controlling her own body.
It was like being trapped inside her own mind.
Countless invisible chains seemed to bind her consciousness, preventing her from taking control.
She could still perceive what was happening around her.
She could see. She could hear. She could feel. But she couldn’t stop herself. Her body moved according to another instinct.
A primitive instinct. That was storm and thunder and destruction. She wanted to summon lightning.
She wanted to fill the sky with clouds. She wanted to create storms and let thunder shake the entire world.
There was no reason behind those desires.
There was no hatred nor purpose.
Just an overwhelming urge to release the power inside her.
Is this what it means to become a true dragon?
The thought had terrified her.
Because if she surrendered completely to that instinct, she wouldn’t be Akari anymore.
She would simply become a powerful beast driven by its bloodline.
And then she remembered Noah. His presence. His voice. His stubbornness. His ridiculous behavior. His constant teasing. His laughter. He was now the closest person to her. Very important.
And then she heard him calling her name.
"AKARI!"
His voice had pierced through the chaos. At first, it had been nothing more than a distant sound.
Then it came again.
"IT’S ME, NOAH!"
His voice came again and again. He kept calling for her despite knowing how dangerous she was.
Even when she attacked him, he refused to stop. His voice gradually became clearer. It reached somewhere deep within her consciousness.
And then she realized something. Noah was in danger. Because of her. The thought terrified her more than losing control itself.
’I might kill him.’
That realization became the first crack in the chains surrounding her consciousness.
She remembered why she had been fighting against her bloodline for so many years.
She didn’t want to lose herself. She didn’t want to become a monster. And she certainly didn’t want to hurt someone she cared about so much.
Noah’s voice gave her something to hold onto. Slowly, she began pulling against those invisible chains.
It wasn’t easy. The storm inside her fought back.
Her body wanted to continue destroying everything around her.
But she kept resisting. One chain broke then another. Little by little, her consciousness returned to the surface.
Until finally she opened her eyes. Not the eyes of a mindless dragon.
Her own as she regained control of her body. The storm was still raging inside her. The immense power was still there.
But now she was the one controlling it. That was the final step of her awakening. Not merely gaining the power of her bloodline.
But possessing the strength of will to control it. Akari’s eyes narrowed as she returned to the present.
The abomination attacked again. She vanished in a flash of blue lightning.
SHING!!!
Her katana sliced through another portion of its corrupted body.
She reappeared several meters away, lightning crackling around her wings.
’I finally awakened completely. I am no longer a human... but a dragon.’
Her gaze hardened.
’And I won’t let anyone take that control away from me.’
She looked toward the direction Noah had escaped.
A faint softness appeared in her eyes thinking of Noah.
Then her expression turned cold again.
She faced the abomination.
"Now..."
Lightning gathered around her.
"...it’s my turn."
Blue lightning crackled violently across Akari’s body, wrapping around her like a living current.
The same azure energy crawled along the length of her katana, causing the blade to glow brightly enough to illuminate the storm-darkened sky.
The wind responded to her presence. Clouds churned overhead.
Thunder rolled across the heavens. For a moment, the entire forest seemed to exist beneath her command.
The abomination stared at her. Then its enormous mouth slowly curved into a grotesque grin.
"REMINDS ME OF THE OLD STORM DRAGON..."
Its single crimson eye narrowed.
"...BUT HE WAS FAR STRONGER."
Akari’s expression immediately changed.
’Old Storm Dragon?’ Her grip tightened around her katana.
’Is this creature connected to the previous Storm Dragon?’
There was no time to think about it. The abomination’s body suddenly expanded.
SQUELCH!
More than fifty enormous tentacles erupted from its back and shoulders. They twisted through the air before shooting toward Akari from every direction.
Akari looked at them calmly. She lowered her katana.
Then she swung it. Not toward the creature. Simply through the air. As if she was commanding something.
WHOOM!!!
The wind changed direction instantly. Every gust surrounding the battlefield suddenly converged toward the abomination. The air began spinning.
It spun faster and faster.
BOOOOOOM!!!
A gigantic tornado erupted around the creature. Its massive body disappeared inside the violent vortex.
The fifty tentacles were dragged upward, twisting helplessly inside the rotating winds. The abomination roared.
"GRRRAAAAAAAHHH!!!"
Akari raised her katana toward the sky. Lightning gathered between the clouds. Thousands of blue sparks danced across the heavens.
Her eyes flashed.
"Fall."
KRA-KOOOOOM!!!
A massive bolt of lightning descended from the clouds.
It struck the tornado. From different parts of clouds, they came down and covered at tornado.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
Lightning continuously poured into the vortex. The entire tornado turned brilliant blue.
The forest was illuminated as brightly as daylight. The abomination’s silhouette could be seen twisting inside the storm.
Its corrupted flesh burned wherever the lightning touched it.
Yet it didn’t fall. Instead, the creature planted its enormous feet into the ground.
THUD!
The earth cracked beneath it. Its remaining tentacles stabbed into the ground like anchors. The tornado began slowing.
Akari’s eyes narrowed.
’It’s resisting the storm?’
The creature suddenly pulled its arms apart.
BOOOOM!!!
A violent shockwave exploded outward. The tornado ruptured.
Wind tore through the forest, flattening trees and throwing debris in every direction.
Akari crossed her katana before her body. The gale slammed into her.
Her wings spread wide. She remained suspended in the air.
The abomination emerged from the dissipating vortex. Large portions of its body were charred and smoking.
But the wounds were already closing. Flesh crawled over the damaged areas.
Akari’s gaze became colder.
"Regeneration?"
She raised her katana. Blue lightning condensed around the blade until it became almost solid.
The creature opened its mouth.
"YOU HAVE THE SAME EYES."
Akari paused.
"THE SAME STORM."
Its grin widened.
"BUT YOU ARE NOT HIM."
Akari’s eyes narrowed.
"Who are you? Who is this storm dragon you are talking about?"
The creature didn’t answer. Instead, its enormous body suddenly lunged forward.
BOOOOOOM!!!
The ground exploded beneath its feet.
Akari disappeared. The creature’s fist smashed through empty air.
Before it could react.
SHING!
A blue flash appeared behind its neck. Akari’s katana swept across. A deep cut opened. The creature roared and swung its arm backward.
Akari vanished again. She reappeared above its head. Lightning gathered around her wings. Then she descended.
BOOOOOOM!!!
Her katana struck the creature’s shoulder with the force of a thunderbolt.
The impact drove it down onto one knee. The forest shook violently. Akari landed several meters away. Shockwave shot from their battle shook the whole dimension.
Her breathing remained steady. But her eyes were focused. It’s powerful. She looked at the rapidly regenerating wound.
But it can be damaged. Lightning began gathering around her again.
The storm answered. And this time, Akari didn’t intend to give the creature even a moment to recover.
