Daniel gritted his teeth so hard that blood began to seep from his gums, coating his teeth in crimson. His anger broke into raw, desperate pleading as he looked into his son’s blue eyes.
"Tell me the truth of what happened that day!" Daniel begged, his voice cracking with unbearable anguish. "TELL ME!"
His hands trembled violently against Axel’s collar as he pleaded. "How did your mother die? Tell me how she died!"
Axel took a deep breath, calming his internal emotions. He reached up, gently unclasped his father’s grip from his collar, and took a step back. His eyes turned cold once more as his gaze travelled past Daniel towards Allen Dusker.
The Duke was lying nearby on the bloodstained stone, severely weakened, waiting silently for any chance to either launch a desperate attack or flee the scene.
Axel raised his hand, pointing at the dying nobleman, and spoke with absolute authority.
"Kill him," Axel declared. "Kill your friend, your best friend of the past, and then I will tell you."
Daniel’s hand shook for a brief instant. It was only for a split second, but the hesitation was clear. Giving Axel a deep, lingering look, Daniel turned his ruthless gaze toward the fifth phase powerhouse who was now on the very brink of collapse.
As Allen and Daniel looked into the eyes of each other, a mutual understanding flashed past them. The Duke let out a bitter, exhausted smile, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
"So...?" Allen said softly, his voice raspy and thin. "This is how it ends, my friend."
Memories of the past flashed through the minds of both men in that quiet moment. They remembered growing up together, training side by side in their youth, and sharing a bond so strong they were practically brothers.
They remembered how they had both fallen in love with the same woman, Myra. Yet, even when Myra chose Daniel, the two of them had remained friends. Their bond had survived the heartbreak.
Fate, however, had proved far too cruel. An outsider had entered their group and ruined everything. The forsaken princess of Suncrest had manipulated events from behind the curtain, turning their bond into hatred and ultimately causing Myra’s death.
Allen looked up at Daniel with tired, hollow eyes. He spoke in a pleading voice, making his final request as life slowly drained from his broken body.
"Can you do me one last favour?" Allen asked quietly. "Just... spare my son. He is innocent in all of this."
Daniel’s eyes softened with sadness for a brief moment. He looked at his former friend, swallowed the lump in his throat, and gave a firm nod.
"Goodbye..." Daniel whispered. "...old friend."
He raised his sword sideways, holding the hilt tightly with both hands. Looking straight into the eyes of Allen, he slashed his blade right toward the Duke’s neck with all the force he could muster. Allen did not close his eyes.
He kept looking directly at his friend until the very end, conveying a silent apology that could only be understood by the two of them.
With a soft thud, the severed head of the Duke landed on the hard ground. Bright red blood poured out from the cut neck, soaking the dark stone. The headless body slumped forward and lay flat atop the mountain peak.
Then, as life completely left his physical shell, the body, which was half charred, started to crumble rapidly. The black burns spread across the remaining unburned half, reducing muscle, tissue, and bone into fine black ash that blew away in the wind.
Daniel stood there motionless, countless conflicting emotions overwhelming his mind all at once.
His legs buckled beneath the weight of his silver armour, as if the heavy reality of killing his once closest friend was only hitting him now. He stared down at the severed head of Allen lying in the growing pool of blood.
The Duke had died with his eyes wide open, but strangely, there was a subtle smile resting upon his pale lips. It was as if the Duke did not feel the agony of death in his final moments, but only the bliss of escape.
It was the pure relief of no longer having to bear the countless unbearable burdens resting on his shoulders.
The burden of carrying the heavy weight of his ducal family.
The burden of having to live with the same vile princess as his wife who had murdered Myra.
The burden of not being able to do anything to punish the killer of Myra.
The burden of not being able to show genuine love for his son who was completely innocent.
The burden of not being able to do anything to help Daniel while the princess continually schemed against the Nomrad family.
And the burden of having to stand as an enemy against Daniel and Myra’s son.
It had all finally ended with the sweet and dark call of death.
Daniel tightened his grip on his sword handle, feeling deeply irked and angered by that peaceful smile. He hated that Allen had found peace while leaving him behind in this living nightmare. At the same time, he felt completely broken inside.
Brushing down all of those painful feelings, Daniel finally turned around toward his son, who had been standing silently throughout the entire execution.
Daniel suddenly frowned upon seeing the unsettling smile lingering on his son’s lips. It was only then that he suddenly remembered the terrifying truth once again. Beneath that handsome human exterior, his son was a demon, not a human.
Daniel asked through gritted teeth, his voice filled with a cold demand. "Axel, tell me now."
Axel did not answer immediately, nor did he look toward his father. He simply walked past him with quiet, measured footsteps. He bent down with calm grace and took the bloodied, half-charred severed head of Allen Dusker into his hands, gripping it firmly by the hair.
Daniel stared at his son, a terrible feeling settling deep in his chest. He felt completely unnerved by that subtle demonic smile, despite the boy being in his radiant human state.
No matter how much he thought about it, no matter how much he wished things were different, after learning that Axel was Osiris all along, he realised he could never look at his son with the same loving eyes as before.
"Axel?" Daniel asked once more, his voice trembling slightly.
Only then did the Divine Runecaster look toward his father. His blue eyes locked onto Daniel as he spoke in a calm, distant voice.
"Come with me."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed in suspicion as he saw Axel’s body slowly start to float upward into the air, heading straight toward the direction of the Ducal mansion in the distance.
Daniel opened his mouth to object, wanting to demand his answers right here on this bloodstained ground, but he found himself unable to utter a word.
Pushing down the uncomfortable, twisting feeling in his chest, Daniel activated his propulsion runes and leapt into the sky, following right behind his Demonic offspring.
