"Uh..."
I rubbed the back of my neck.
There was no way I could tell Camila about Sylvia.
Not yet.
She was already feeling insecure. If she found out I had a girlfriend now...
I didn’t know how she would take it.
I forced a smile and folded my arms across my chest.
"Hold on, Cam," I said, raising an eyebrow.
"Who’s sneaking around here?"
A teasing smile tugged at Camila’s lips. Instead of answering, she simply shook her head and turned back into the bedroom.
I watched her disappear before my attention shifted to Daniela.
She stepped closer, gently taking both of my hands into hers.
"Lia," she said with an adorable smile, "don’t mind Cam."
"She wants to keep you all to herself."
She puffed out her cheeks dramatically. "But that won’t work."
"You have to spend time with other people too."
She squeezed my hands lightly.
"Besides..."
"You’re my baby too."
My baby?
I blinked before a helpless laugh escaped me. She had upgraded from calling me my girl to calling me my baby.
Where did these two even learn this?
I smiled and gave her hand a gentle squeeze before heading back into the bedroom.
Daniela watched me for a moment before humming to herself and before heading toward the staircase.
Camila was sitting on the bed when I walked in, absentmindedly scrolling through her phone.
I stopped beside her. "Cam."
She looked up.
"How are you feeling?"
"I’m okay," she replied softly before locking her phone and setting it aside.
"You were supposed to go to the hospital this morning, right?"
I hesitated.
I was.
But if I showed up without Sylvia, Mom would definitely ask questions.
Where’s Sylvia?
Why didn’t she come with you?
And I had absolutely no idea how I was supposed to answer those.
"I’ll go later," I said after a moment. "I’ll go with Sylvia this evening."
Camila frowned. "Why Sylvia?"
I smiled. "Because Mom will definitely ask about her."
"And it’ll be easier if she’s there."
Camila stared at me for a second before nodding slowly.
"...That makes sense."
I smiled and nodded.
"Anyway, I’ll head home, get changed, and wait for you to pick me up for the book launch."
"Okay."
I turned toward the door.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Camila trying to get up as well.
I quickly shook my head. "Stay there."
"I can see myself out."
She looked at me uncertainly. "Are you sure?"
"Mmm."
She slowly sat back down.
"Okay."
I smiled and gave her a small wave. She waved back with a smile.
Just before I reached the door, I paused and looked back at her.
"And don’t make everyone worry anymore, okay?"
Camila smiled sheepishly. "I won’t."
"Good."
I opened the door and stepped out, closing it quietly behind me.
The hallway was already alive with the quiet rhythm of the morning.
Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, while the Everton family’s staff moved efficiently from one task to another.
Some dusted the antique furniture.
Others swept the polished floors until they gleamed.
Others replaced the fresh flowers in the crystal vases, their sweet fragrance drifting through the air, filling it with the faint fragrance of lilies and roses.
I hurried down the staircase, taking two steps at a time.
For some reason...
I suddenly couldn’t wait to see my girlfriend again.
When I got downstairs, Mr. and Mrs. Everton were already seated in the spacious living room.
The morning newspaper rested on Mr. Everton’s lap, while Mrs. Everton sipped quietly from a cup of coffee.
The moment they noticed me, they both looked up.
"Good morning, Uncle."
"Good morning, Auntie."
A warm smile spread across Mrs. Everton’s face.
"Oh, Amelia, dear."
Her gaze drifted toward the staircase before returning to me.
"It looks like you’re about to leave."
I nodded with a small smile. "Yes, Auntie."
"Why don’t you stay and have breakfast with us first?" she offered kindly.
I shook my head apologetically.
"I’d love to, but I need to go home and get ready."
"I’m attending a book launch with Camila later this morning."
"A book launch?" Mrs. Everton repeated, sounding slightly surprised.
"Yes."
She stared at me for a moment before exchanging a quick glance with her husband.
"So that’s where she’s going..." she murmured softly.
The words were so quiet that I almost didn’t catch them.
A second later, she smiled again. "Alright then. Have a wonderful time."
"Thank you, Auntie."
I gave them one last smile before turning toward the door. I had barely taken a few steps when Mr. Everton’s voice reached my ears.
"So..."
"That was the reason Camila canceled today’s meeting with our biggest client."
I slowed down without meaning to.
"I still can’t believe she postponed such an important investment..."
"...just to attend a book launch with the Winston family’s daughter."
His voice carried a mixture of disappointment and helplessness.
I stood frozen for a second. A strange feeling settled in my chest.
Cam...
You cancelled an important business meeting...
...because of me?
My fingers tightened slightly around my phone.
I slowly lowered my eyes.
That didn’t sound like Camila at all. I knew her better than most people.
Once she made up her mind, nothing could change it.
Not her parents.
Not her company’s board.
Not anyone...
Except—
My thoughts came to an abrupt stop. A bitter smile tugged at my lips.
Me.
The front door opened as one of the servants bowed respectfully.
"Miss Amelia."
I gave a distracted nod and stepped outside.
The cool morning breeze brushed gently against my face as the door closed quietly behind me. But my mind remained inside the mansion.
Why would she do something like that?
Why was she putting me before work...
...before something that important just to spend the day with me?
I lowered my eyes, unable to stop thinking about it. I let out a slow breath.
Camila...
What am I supposed to do with you?
I walked toward where my car was parked and pressed the key fob.
The headlights flashed once with a soft beep.
I opened the driver’s door, but before getting in, I turned and looked back at the Everton mansion.
For a moment, I simply stood there. A quiet sigh escaped my lips.
Then I quietly slipped into the driver’s seat and started the engine. It purred to life beneath my hands.
A few seconds later, I drove out through the gates.
The drive home was unusually quiet.
My mind kept drifting back to what Mr. Everton had said.
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.
A small sigh escaped my lips. "You’re making this difficult, Cam..."
A few minutes later, I turned into our driveway and parked in front of the mansion.
The moment the engine died, I grabbed my phone, got out of the car, and hurried inside.
All I wanted was to see Sylvia.
The house was already alive with activity.
The staff moved quietly through the spacious halls, each busy with their morning routine.
Some polished the furniture until it gleamed beneath the sunlight; others carried fresh flowers to replace the ones in the vases, while the faint aroma of breakfast drifted from the kitchen.
I barely noticed any of it.
I walked past them, quickly climbed the staircase, and headed straight for my room.
For some reason...
My heart started beating a little faster. A smile slowly found its way onto my lips.
I took a deep breath before resting my hand on the doorknob and pushed the door open.
"Babe?" I called softly as I stepped inside, unable to hide the excitement in my voice.
My eyes immediately searched the room.
The smile on my face slowly disappeared.
She wasn’t there.
I frowned. "Baby?"
I called again, walking farther into the room.
The room remained quiet.
I checked the bathroom. It was empty.
I searched the room from one corner to another, but there wasn’t a trace of her.
I stopped in the middle of the room and looked around in confusion.
"That’s strange..."
Without another thought, I left my room and made my way to Sylvia’s.
I pushed her door open without knocking.
"Babe?"
Silence answered me.
I searched every corner of the room, but there was no sign of her.
I walked back into the middle of the room and looked around, rubbing the back of my neck.
"Where did she go?" I murmured under my breath.
Then a thought suddenly crossed my mind.
A helpless smile tugged at my lips.
"...Don’t tell me you’re playing hide-and-seek with me."
"Babe..." I called again, a smile still lingering on my lips. "Please come out. I’m already missing you."
The room remained quiet.
There was still no response.
No Sylvia.
Not even the faintest sound from anywhere in the room.
The smile on my face slowly faded. A strange feeling settled in my chest.
"Sylvia...?"
I stepped out of the room and quickened my pace toward the staircase.
"Mrs. Chloe!" I called before I had even reached the last few steps.
A moment later, Mrs. Chloe stepped out of the kitchen and looked toward me in surprise.
"Miss Amelia?"
I walked straight over to her.
"Where’s Sylvia?"
