The manual lock finished turning.

Metal scraped across the floor on the other side as someone dragged the barricade away. The reinforced door opened a few inches, stopped, then slowly widened.

Marcus appeared first.

He looked at Lin Yan’s face, then raised his eyes farther than he expected. His gaze moved over the bloodstained clothes stretched across Lin Yan’s enlarged frame before settling on the iron hammer resting on his shoulder.

Marcus stared for several seconds.

"Were you always that tall?"

Lin Yan stepped through the doorway.

"Food."

Marcus blinked. "What?"

"Bring out everything edible. I’m starving."

The control room fell silent.

Everyone inside had already been staring at him. Now that he had entered the light, the changes were impossible to miss. Lin Yan had left the room looking like a reasonably fit man of average height. He had returned ten centimeters taller, built like a professional bodybuilder and carrying an enormous iron hammer on one shoulder.

His clothes were covered in mud and blood. His right arm hung stiffly beside him, but he carried the massive hammer on his left shoulder as though it weighed almost nothing.

No one asked what had happened outside.

No one asked where the enormous goblin had gone.

They simply began gathering food.

Emergency ration bars, crackers, bread, chocolate and several half-opened packages from the passengers’ bags were placed on the largest desk. Bottled water followed.

Lin Yan lowered the hammer beside the wall.

The iron head struck the floor with a heavy thud.

Several people flinched.

He ignored them, pulled a chair over with his left hand and sat down. The chair creaked beneath his new weight.

His hunger had been manageable before he equipped Trollblood I. Now it felt as though the transformation had emptied everything inside him. His stomach cramped, and even the smell of dry emergency biscuits made his mouth water.

Lin Yan tore open the first package.

Then the second.

The food disappeared quickly.

He ate without speaking, washing down the dry biscuits with water before reaching for a loaf of bread someone had taken from a shopping bag. By the time he finished that, several ration bars and two packets of crackers were already gone.

The people around the control room kept their distance.

A few whispered among themselves, but the conversations stopped whenever Lin Yan raised his head. Even the passengers who had watched him fight earlier seemed uncertain how to approach him now.

Marcus stood nearby for almost a minute before finally stepping closer.

"Lin Yan."

"What?"

Marcus glanced at the shrinking pile of food.

"We still don’t know how long we’re going to be trapped here."

Lin Yan opened another ration bar.

Marcus lowered his voice.

"Shouldn’t we save some of that?"

Several people nearby suddenly became very interested in the surveillance screens.

Lin Yan took a bite.

"No need."

Marcus hesitated. "Why?"

"We’ll be out before it becomes a problem."

He said it as though the matter had already been settled.

Marcus glanced toward the equipment-area door, then at the hammer resting against the wall.

"Right."

He stepped away without arguing.

Lin Yan continued eating until the sharp hunger finally faded. He had consumed far more than he normally could, but instead of feeling uncomfortably full, he only felt warm.

His body was already using everything he had eaten.

Jason watched from the main console. His injured leg remained stretched beneath the desk, although the fresh bandages had stopped the bleeding.

"You should change out of those clothes," he said. "There are spare maintenance uniforms in the rear cabinet."

Lin Yan looked down.

The front of his shirt was stiff with dried blood, while the sleeves and trouser legs had become too short after his sudden growth. Several seams had begun to pull apart around his shoulders and thighs.

"Get me the largest one."

Jason pointed toward a metal cabinet beside the rest area.

Marcus opened it and searched through several folded uniforms before pulling out the largest set he could find.

He held it up, then looked at Lin Yan.

"This might still be tight."

"It’ll do."

Lin Yan took the clothes and entered the washroom.

The mirror above the sink was narrow, but it showed enough.

For a moment, he simply stared.

The face was still his, although his neck had thickened and his shoulders now filled almost the entire mirror. His damaged shirt clung to a chest that looked absurdly large compared with what it had been less than an hour earlier.

He really had changed that much.

Lin Yan stripped off the ruined clothes and used a damp towel to wipe away the mud and blood. Most of it belonged to the goblins, but dark bruising had spread across his right shoulder and upper arm.

Moving the arm sent a sharp pain through it.

He changed into the maintenance uniform using mostly his left hand.

The largest shirt barely fit. The fabric stretched tightly across his shoulders and upper arms, while the trousers strained around his thighs.

Still better than walking around covered in goblin blood.

Lin Yan returned to the control room.

The conversation inside stopped again.

He looked around.

"What?"

No one answered.

Lin Yan walked into the cramped rest area and sat on the narrow bench. His right shoulder continued to throb, and the pain ran down the inside of his upper arm whenever he tried to bend the elbow.

"Replace Battle Instinct I with Minor Regeneration I."

[Confirm trait replacement?]

"Do it."

[Replacement complete.]

Warmth gathered inside his right shoulder.

It spread slowly through the damaged tissue and continued down the inside of his upper arm. The sensation was stronger than when he had first equipped Minor Regeneration I. Trollblood I was already improving his natural recovery, and the two effects were now working together.

The pain did not disappear, but the constant throbbing began to ease.
