Jaguar:

I noticed the look Theodore gave me.

I guess it was the conviction in my voice that made him realize I was finally over her.

There was a time when Aster meant a lot to me.

She was my first girlfriend.

After that, we broke up more times than I could count.

We always found our way back to each other, but looking back, I think we only did it because she reminded me of our school days.

We had studied in the same class, dealt with the same academic pressure, and grown used to having each other around.

She felt familiar.

Until she didn’t.

Eventually, it reached the point where I just didn’t feel that connection anymore.

So I ended things with her.

It didn’t end well.

She started blowing up my phone, threatening me with all kinds of things.

She said she’d show up at the mansion, beg me to take her back, and even get Ragnar involved because, according to her, it was unacceptable that I was leaving her again.

I honestly didn’t know what to do.

So I spoke to Gigi about it.

She told me I had made the right decision.

The moment she gave me her approval, I decided I wasn’t going to entertain Aster’s pleas anymore.

So I had blocked her completely.

That explained why she had started blowing up not only Theodore’s phone, but probably Ragnar’s as well.

Ragnar already knew, or at least suspected, that I had a soft spot for Verity.

I was just waiting for the day he brought it up again.

I wanted to know whether he approved.

I’d reached a point where I didn’t think I’d take it lightly if anyone told me to stay away from Verity.

It would be impossible.

After Theodore and I finished our meal, we headed back to our rooms.

The same two women followed us.

They stepped into the elevator beside us, giggling and stealing glances our way.

Neither Theodore nor I paid them any attention.

For me, it was simple.

There was someone waiting for me at home.

As for Theodore, I figured he was finally over the phase of sleeping around.

Watching Ragnar find someone had probably made him realize it was time to find his own mate.

Ragnar had been lucky enough to have Gigi.

Theodore and I were still single, with no idea where we’d find our mates.

So why not find someone and make her our chosen mate instead?

We ignored the women completely.

Their giggles gradually died away, replaced with disappointed expressions.

When the elevator doors opened, we stepped out without another glance and headed straight to our rooms.

The night passed peacefully.

Neither of us did anything else.

We simply went to bed.

I wanted to get home early.

I needed to talk to Verity.

Jaguar and I woke up early.

It was almost as if we were both in a hurry to get home.

Sometimes I wondered if there was something going on between Theodore and Jenna.

Jenna always looked at him with those googly eyes, and every now and then, Theodore would return a small smile.

Jenna was a good woman, so I wouldn’t mind if my brother wanted to pursue something with her.

But only if he was serious.

He wasn’t allowed to treat the women in our circle the way he treated his one-night stands.

Those women usually ended up calling him over and over again, only to be ignored.

If he planned to do that to Jenna, he was in for a fucking rude awakening.

Imagine having to see her every day at the mansion.

It would make everything bitter.

Eventually, we arrived home.

We were both exhausted.

I planned to get a little more sleep.

It was only seven in the morning, so everyone else would probably wake up within the next hour.

As we stepped into the mansion, quietly talking about how successful the meeting had been, something caught both our attention.

We came to an abrupt halt.

Through the entrance to the left wing, I saw someone walking out of the living room.

"Is that Ragnar?" Theodore asked, his eyes narrowing.

The left wing.

The wing where no one lived except Verity.

Ragnar was still wearing his nightclothes.

He walked out, scratching the back of his neck with one hand while the other rested in the pocket of his shorts.

Then he slipped that hand into his other pocket as well.

He stopped for a moment.

Slowly, he turned to look back toward the left wing before finally walking away.

It felt as though countless needles had pierced my entire body.

"Why was Ragnar in Miss Verity’s room?" Theodore asked.

He voiced the very thought I couldn’t bring myself to accept.

Even as he said it, I was already searching for excuses, desperate to silence the question that had lodged itself in my mind.

"Um—I don’t know. Maybe they were working on something," I said, scratching the back of my neck.

"Anyway, go ahead and get some rest," I added, patting Theodore on the back.

Verity had to be awake.

Otherwise, why the fuck would my brother be coming out of her wing?

Maybe they had something to discuss.

Maybe they were working on a project together.

Maybe.

There were plenty of possibilities.

But every one of them led to the same conclusion.

Verity had to be awake.

Otherwise, why would Ragnar be in her wing?

A strange tightness settled in my chest.

"Yeah– I’ll just sit here for a while," Theodore said, dropping onto the couch and pulling out his phone.

Agitation washed over me.

He had no idea how desperate I was to find out what had happened.

I needed to go into Verity’s wing and check on her.

But with Theodore sitting there, I couldn’t.

So I walked over and lowered myself onto the couch beside him.

"You should get some rest," Theodore remarked, clearly surprised that I’d decided to stay up.

"No, I’m really not sleepy. I’ll just watch some TV," I replied, reaching for the remote.

"Oh, okay," Theodore said before returning his attention to his phone.

The two of us sat there like fools.

Theodore scrolled through his phone while I stared absentmindedly at the television, barely paying attention to whatever was on the screen.

Every passing minute made me more restless.

By the time an hour had gone by and Mrs. Bundy was awake, there was no point in waiting anymore.

By then, I was sure Verity had gone back to sleep.
