Final Villain's Broken System: Geniuses Make Me Stronger!
Chapter 18: Slip upAlaric held the Mana Channel Construction Orb in his hand. With this treasure, reaching the Knight rank would take a month at most.
Thinking of the rewards and quests of the System, his eyes narrowed as he remembered something he might’ve overlooked.
Alice has demonstrated that she possesses knowledge of the future which includes the System and its quests and rewards.
The first quest where I called for Evan and lost to him could be counted as me finding out and testing a talent under me.
The second quest can be me wanting to keep that talent.
But when it comes to the third quest, I asked an attendant to tell Evan to exterminate the bandits.
Alaric sighed.
All three quests had the same objectives as the ones mentioned in Tales of Golden Era, Alice surely had knowledge of those.
His actions for the first quest could be an issue but still considered a coincidence, the second one was just a logical follow up to the first quest so it wasn’t a problem.
However, for the third quest, he had technically been the one to give Evan the task.
Alice would have every right to wonder whether he somehow knew about the System... or, more absurdly, whether he possessed it himself.
No... my possession of the System absolutely has to remain a secret.
Alaric didn’t hesitate to act once he identified a problem.
He put back the rewards in the system space, and left the study.
Fortunately, his two personal attendants were standing outside, awaiting his instructions.
He called the one who had passed on the message to Evan inside the study.
When the attendant read what he was about to sign on the Divine Contract Scroll, he hesitated.
Alaric narrowed his eyes, a bad feeling emerging in his heart. "What happened?"
The attendant pointed to the Divine Contract Scroll and said, "Young Lord, when you returned yesterday, your personal maid came and asked about the very thing you’ve listed on this Divine Contract Scroll."
He paused, gathering his breath before continuing. "She asked both of us attendants if young lord had asked me to pass on the message to Evan about the task of exterminating bandits in Tikka Town."
Alaric’s heart sank.
Right. I took Alice to inspect the site of the mana crystal deposit immediately after giving that task to Evan, so she didn’t have the time to realise he had left.
But after returning yesterday, she must’ve asked around and got to know of Evan’s absence.
How quick of her to immediately question my attendants instead of coming to me directly since, obviously, she is wary of me.
Alaric realised that he had slipped up. He massaged his temples and pressed. "What did that other attendant and you say?"
"Young Lord, no one was present when you gave me this instruction so Attendant Kane answered that he didn’t know. And I did the same."
Alaric narrowed his eyes. "Why did you lie?"
The attendant bowed. "I’m sorry for lying to your personal maid, Young Lord. But I did it because I felt she was suspicious.
"Like I mentioned earlier, no one was present when you gave me this instruction, and our servants are trained to not ask anything when preparing carriages and supplies.
"The Squires are also taught not to share the details of their missions.
"That begs the question, how did the maid know the accurate details of the task assigned to Squire Evan?"
Alaric couldn’t help but heave a sigh of relief.
Thank god this attendant can think.
Having met and dealt with a great number of people back on Earth, he knew that the capacity to actually think was already a rare skill.
He smiled at the man. "Your name is Rodri, correct?"
The attendant nodded.
"Go to the chamberlain and collect a bar of gold. Tell him it’s the young lord’s reward for your meritorious service."
There was a visible look of joy on the attendant’s face as he bowed and thanked Alaric before leaving.
Of course, Alaric still made Rodri sign the Divine Contract Scroll to not expose that he had been given the instruction of sending that message to Evan about the task.
He spent the next few minutes checking up on prices of magic items before leaving the study and finding Alice.
"Prepare a carriage."
Once they were seated in the carriage, Alice asked from the coach box. "Where are we going?"
"The Arcanum Magic Tower."
Alice was startled, she clearly hadn’t expected this. Knowing that Alaric wouldn’t explain even if she asked, she simply flicked the reins and the carriage set off.
For the next few hours, Alaric used the Mana Channel Construction Orb and felt mana channels manifesting in his body.
There was no increase in strength, but he was now one step closer to the Knight rank.
The moment all the mana channels were constructed would be the day he would achieve a breakthrough to Knight rank.
After reaching their destination, Alaric got off and instructed Alice to wait for him outside.
Standing before the Magic Tower, Alaric found himself craning his neck upward. Even then, the summit remained hidden behind the clouds.
The enormous cylindrical structure was so vast that its curved wall seemed to stretch endlessly in either direction.
This was the Arcanum, the magic tower closest to House Orlen’s Territory, situated just below its southern border.
It was headed by Kyle Lancaster, a Champion Mage.
Alaric walked in without any fear, because he knew his own situation very clearly.
Upon his death, to attend her son’s funeral, Marchioness Orlen would have a legitimate reason to leave the border.
Once she was away from the border, the king and nobles would have no choice but to let her go through the title upgrade ceremony.
If Champion Mage Kyle killed him, the king and the nobles would send him to the afterlife long before his mother, a Paragon Knight, had the chance to exact revenge.
It was entirely possible that Champion Mage Kyle would even have to ensure his safety now that he had entered his magic tower.
Alaric was soon granted a meeting with the Champion Mage. There was barely any small talk before the latter asked in a straightforward manner.
"May I know what the young lord of House Orlen is here for?"
Alaric leaned forward in his chair and spoke.
"I’m here to trade for magic items which help in mining with complete secrecy."
