Champion Mage Kyle was a middle aged man with slicked back gray hair and similar colored sideburns.

A long black robe covered his entire body while a pair of spectacles with golden rims rested on his nose.

When Champion Mage Kyle heard Alaric’s request he immediately guessed that House Orlen must’ve found a deposit.

But that was as good as knowing nothing.

He didn’t know what kind of deposit it was, nor where it was located.

House Orlen, being headed by a Marchioness, had an extremely large territory, but there was little sense in discreetly mining within one’s own land unless the deposit was extremely precious.

Either that, or House Orlen had found a deposit outside their territory.

Mining in another noble house’s territory carried enormous risks, making the unchartered territories far more likely.

But again, there were many such territories in the kingdom.

They were believed to be entirely useless for growing crops, building houses, laying roads, and some were even tainted by foul or sinister energies that actively interfered with anything built or grown upon them.

But that hardly narrowed things down. There were too many unchartered territories, spread across far too vast an area for him to accurately guess the deposit’s location.

Kyle didn’t immediately agree to it, but instead asked. "What are you planning to trade for it?"

Alaric spread his hands and answered. "Something that can help a Mage on their path to Champion Mage."

Kyle’s eyes lit up. As a Champion Mage, this was useless to him, but one must not forget that he was the head of a magic tower.

A magic tower wasn’t merely a building, but an organization consisting primarily of Mages and Mage Apprentices. Helping a Mage on their path to Champion Mage would strengthen his forces and even earn him their favor.

"What is it? How does it work? How efficient is it?"

Alaric already had the data given by the system so he confidently put forward his condition.

"Send a Mage of your choosing to work for House Orlen for a month, and they’ll return having saved a year of progress."

Of course, Alaric didn’t give the name of the treasure he had nor did he share the correct data. He wasn’t that foolish. Kyle wasn’t someone he trusted.

A Mage only needed to use the Mana Compression Pearl for a week to save a year of compressing mana themselves.

Kyle smiled. "And why must the Mage work for House Orlen? Why not let him receive the benefit here for a month?"

Alaric chuckled openly in front of the Champion Mage. "Why jest? I’d be a fool to agree to that."

Kyle adjusted his spectacles and shrugged. "Then I must apologize. The deal can’t go through."

Alaric didn’t press but simply stood up with a regretful expression on his face as he spoke.

"I guess I have no choice but to try to trade with Champion Mage Alex instead."

Champion Mage Alex was genuinely Alaric’s BATNA, while also being a way to force Champion Mage Kyle’s hand.

As expected, Kyle immediately frowned. "Threatening me?"

Alaric shook his head. "Please don’t misunderstand. I wouldn’t dare threaten a Champion Mage of your standing.

"This is simply a young lord of a noble house trying to trade with whoever he can."

Alaric had done his homework before coming here. Champion Mages Kyle and Alex had been bitter enemies since the time they were Mage Apprentices.

Champion Mage Kyle was a steady man who could stomach a loss, but he absolutely would not bear Alex getting an advantage he could’ve received.

There was a chance that even Champion Mage Alex might reject Alaric’s trade offer, but Kyle had no intention of banking on that.

"Perhaps I’d be more inclined to agree if we discuss the terms." Kyle interlocked the fingers of his hands, his elbows resting on the armrest of his chair.

Alaric gave a pleasant smile and sat back down. "What changes would you like?"

As was common sense when negotiating, one shouldn’t reveal their limit from the beginning.

He was prepared to house the Mage for a year at most, but starting with a month was deliberate.

Fair, he would also get the Mage’s service during that period, but that was merely an additional benefit. What truly mattered was how much progress Kyle considered equivalent to the value of those magic items.

The fewer years of progress Kyle considered equivalent to those magic items, the more valuable the Mana Compression Pearl would appear in any future negotiation.

He couldn’t let his greed get in the way of the actual reason he was here: the magic items he needed to discreetly mine the mana crystal deposit.

That was much more valuable in the long run than the service of a Mage.

Kyle narrowed his eyes. "The Mage wouldn’t be under the service of your house. I’ll only send him to receive the benefit you promised."

Alaric smiled wryly. "Isn’t that too disadvantageous for me? I am already being quite generous by trading a precious resource for the magic items that magic towers can produce without much difficulty."

Kyle shook his head. "You’re wrong. Even though the market of magic items is dominated entirely by magic towers, we still need considerable effort to make each and every one of those.

"Not to mention the magic items you’ve requested are a bit different from the norm. They’ll need even more effort to be made."

Alaric chuckled. "Please stop joking. A lot of noble houses engage in secret mining even if no one openly talks about it. I am just one of many. My request is certainly nothing unusual.

"It’s only because such items are not sold openly in the market district that I came directly to this magic tower."

The Champion Mage’s lips twitched almost imperceptibly before he spoke. "Your reputation hardly does you justice. You’ve certainly put up quite a facade to make others lower their guard against House Orlen."

Alaric didn’t speak, keeping his mouth shut. Could he say that he had transmigrated into this body just yesterday and the previous owner was indeed a drunkard in reality?

Seeing that Alaric hadn’t answered, Kyle continued. "Well, it seems you’ve certainly done your homework before coming here. In that case I’ll drop the useless things and get straight to the point.

"He can work for House Orlen while receiving the benefit you promised, but one month is out of the question.

"I want him to stay for half a year, serving your house while receiving the corresponding benefit you promised. Six years of progress."

Alaric abruptly coughed into his fist. "Straight to six months? You’re too ruthless Champion Kyle. We have a very limited amount of that resource.

"The most I can do is two months."

Kyle shook his head. "Those magic items aren’t cheap. Keep in mind that your medium of exchange is not the standard mana crystals."

"It’s more precious than mana crystals." Alaric pointed out.

"It is." Kyle admitted, and continued. "But it only benefits me and the Mage I’ll send. The creation of magic items requires effort from a group of people. I’ll need to pay them from my own pocket, so it isn’t as precious as you might think.

"I won’t make things difficult for you. Let’s do five months."

Alaric took a deep breath and said. "Three months. Our house really doesn’t have a lot."

Kyle shook his head yet again. "Four months. That’s the absolute lowest I’ll go. Otherwise, you are free to trade with Alex."

Alaric gritted his teeth, his face going nearly red as he nodded. "Alright. Four months it is."

My limit was twelve months, four months is a fucking steal.

Kyle leaned back in his chair with a satisfied, smug smile. From his expression, he clearly believed he’d squeezed quite a concession out of Alaric.

"Let’s iron out the details of the Divine Contract Scroll, shall we?"
