"Young Lord?! The Mage?!"

Steward Edwin gazed at Alaric with a baffled expression.

The fact that he had brought back huge beasts and a load of corpses, including Squires and a Knight, could be explained through luck.

The Young Lord’s recent normal behaviour could be explained by him being sober.

Steward also remembered that his Young Lord had brought another bunch of corpses and told him not to spread word about it since he found them in a cave with experimental papers and that their identities could be problematic.

All in all, Steward reckoned that all the recent happenings were more or less due to young lord’s extraordinary luck, as he kept stumbling on treasures like corpses of beasts and strong individuals.

But to get a Mage to work for House Orlen? That would require some real competence, especially since the Steward was sure none of the House’s resources had been used.

It meant Alaric had convinced the Mage to work for him entirely through his personal means, without relying on House Orlen.

"I’ll arrange him. You don’t need to worry about it."

Alaric drew clear boundaries that the new mage would take orders only from him.

Steward’s eyebrow twitched. "Combat personnel come under my authority as well, Young Lord."

Alaric didn’t respond, while Grok stood silently in the face of the blatant internal powerful struggle.

"Just remember what I said." Alaric left those words behind as he headed towards his personal training hall with Grok in tow.

When they reached the place, Grok’s eyes immediately drifted towards the mechanism situated in the corner. He couldn’t use his surveillance spell model inside the mansion since that would be inappropriate.

Alaric let out a smirk. If he wanted the Mage to cooperate sincerely while working with him, he knew he would have to give some benefits first.

"Is it okay if we start immediately?"

Alaric asked, to which Grok nodded. No one would say no to progress.

Especially when it came to using a treasure with such an insane rate of progress. One year of progress in one month was already among the top tier resources available to a Mage on the journey to Champion Mage.

Alaric had Grok sit on the prepared chair and took out a Divine Contract Scroll he had prepared beforehand and put it in front of Grok.

"Figured you’d do this." The Mage muttered as he began reading the terms on the Divine Contract Scroll.

After he was done, he pointed at one specific clause and said, "This clause says that I can’t share any information about the treasure I’ll be using with anyone.

"Put Champion Mage Kyle as an exception. I can agree not to share the information with anyone else."

Alaric gazed at him speechlessly. "And what if Champion Mage Kyle spreads it around? Do you think I’m stupid?"

Grok pointed out. "You’ve already told him the information that I’ll get a year of progress in one month."

Alaric shook his head. "That information isn’t enough. But if you expose how I’ll be operating the mechanism you see in front of you, along with other subtle details, then it won’t take much effort for others to deduce the resource we are trying to keep secret."

Alaric knew they wouldn’t be able to deduce it, he was simply lying to keep things from getting complicated.

Grok stayed silent. Champion Mage Kyle had correctly predicted that Alaric would refuse to budge on this matter.

He changed his approach. "If you allow me to share some information with Champion Mage Kyle, then I’ll be willing to do some things."

Alaric raised an eyebrow. "What things?"

Grok shot him a subtle smile. "You know, things which would need me to take some risk. You have a contract with Champion Mage Kyle about how I can refuse to take on life threatening tasks.

"I’d be more willing to take those tasks if you agree to change that clause."

Alaric’s expression was one of realization. "Is this why Champion Mage Kyle put that clause back then? I must say he certainly thought far enough."

But he then shook his head. "But then again, you’re only giving a verbal promise that you’ll be more willing to take those tasks. And even if you agree to put it in writing on the Divine Contract Scroll, I can’t agree.

"Just think. A Mage willing to take life threatening tasks in exchange for allowing information about one of House Orlen’s trump card resources to spread. I’d be stupid to agree to that."

Grok sighed.

Young Lord Alaric is every bit as troublesome as Champion Mage Kyle told me he would be. What drunkard? What useless ruler?

If all his previous antics were just acts, then he has indeed successfully lowered the guard of a lot of noble houses against House Orlen. This is terrifying.

"What does the Young Lord want?" Grok asked helplessly.

Alaric shook his head. "Nothing. Just sign the Divine Contract Scroll."

"Fine." Grok shrugged and signed.

Sorry Champion Mage Kyle, I tried, but Young Lord didn’t fall for any of the benefits I presented.

Once the contract was signed, Alaric began tinkering with the mechanisms in front of Grok.

He did a whole range of actions like pulling levers, pushing buttons, sliding blocks, and the like which he had incorporated in the mechanism.

The whole time, Alaric had put on an expression of utmost seriousness, as if he wasn’t faking it but really doing something.

He had also decided on the specific sequence of actions which he would stick to every time so as to not have Grok doubt him.

Because what if Grok asked – ’Why did you push this button after pulling the lever? I remember you pushed this before pulling the lever last time.’

If you were going to scam someone, you should obviously not let them know about it.

After wasting time on these shenanigans,

"Put your hand on these tubes when I tell you to. Channel your mana into the right one, you’ll receive the compressed mana from the left one."

He instructed Grok, before going behind the mechanism.

Alaric put his hand on the Mana Compression Pearl and waited in anticipation.

Naturally, Alaric would not give Grok all the compressed mana produced by the mechanism. That mage would only get a portion.

All that extra compressed mana is going to be mine hehe. I can make more trades with that or keep it for when I’ll become a Mage.
