The next morning, as soon as Alaric woke up, both Zephyr and Evan’s next quest appeared in his mind.

[Quest: Remove a political obstacle of House Orlen without causing public suspicion - Zephyr Nightscale]

[Reward: Eye of Surveillance *3]

[Quest: Convince a neutral noble house to support House Orlen - Evan Lionheart]

[Reward: Spatial Storage Ring]

Alaric’s eyes lit up!

Good stuff.

Spatial Storage Ring was self explanatory. According to Tales of Golden Era, such an expensive and rare magic item was only available to the extreme upper strata of the society, the head of organizations.

Namely, the royal families, ducal houses, magic towers, knight academies, mercenary guilds, merchant guilds and so on.

Eye of Surveillance was an item which the protagonist had once received in Tales of Golden Era, so Alaric didn’t ask the System for an explanation.

It was an artifact which could keep an eye on the target as long as they were in a certain range from the user.

Only a Paragon Knight or a Paragon Mage would be able to clearly sense this magic item on themselves. If it was on others and they were nearby, the Paragon Knight or Paragon Mage would need to make targeted efforts to find this magic item.

These are some truly good items. The quality of the connected person and the difficulty of the quest does matter a lot.

Alaric knew that if his connected individuals weren’t supreme geniuses, he wouldn’t have been able to get such good rewards even if the difficulty remained the same.

However, these quests would have to wait for now. He might need people he could trust around him for the following few days.

Both Evan and Zephyr had already returned to the mansion after finishing their tasks.

After he had his breakfast, he left the mansion with Evan and Grok in tow. He had asked Zephyr to follow him in his invisible state.

As usual, he had Alice drive the carriage to the central square of the Orlena city. Behind their carriage was a storage compartment.

Orlena city was the capital of House Orlen’s territory, and also where their mansion was located.

The central square of Orlena city was used to make declarations, take oaths, give promises, handle apologies and anything which required the House to convey to the population under them.

The streets leading to Central Square were filled with taverns and cafes where intelligence collecting agents gathered like flies. Many of these taverns and cafes were even their base of operation.

When he left the mansion earlier, he had told the information agents of the House to inform the public that he would be there on the central square today.

As expected, by the time he reached, a dense crowd had gathered in the central square.

"Young Lord! Is it true that unknown people have gathered in our territory?"

"Young Lord Alaric! Are we safe?"

"Young Master! Has House Orlen done anything to those unknown people yet?"

Alaric heard numerous shouts as he walked up to the high stage.

Some of them were bound to be spies from other houses who were there to provoke the public against House Orlen, while some might genuinely be asking their questions.

When he reached the stage, he raised his hand.

Unfortunately, due to his reputation the crowd didn’t quite go silent. He had to cough twice, which gave the signal for others to act.

Spell Model - Terra Barrier

Grok deployed the spell model, utilizing a large amount of his mana.

The very earth beneath the high platform began shaking, as three huge earthen walls rose from three sides of the platform, closing at the top in such a way that only the front side of the platform was exposed to the people.

As this was happening, Evan used a magic item to magnify his voice, silencing the crowd, while the people of House Orlen took control of the situation to prevent the public from panicking and not give the troublemakers any chance.

Zephyr is quick enough to handle any attack which might come from the front, while my other sides have been blocked by Grok.

Evan is skilled enough to handle anyone who might come close so I won’t be forced to expose my combat prowess either, this is enough.

Once the crowd turned silent, Alaric took a deep breath to calm his nerves and held a magic item for magnifying the voice in front of him.

"Good morning, subjects of House Orlen, and by extension, of the Flenn Kingdom.

"Today, I’ve gathered everyone to make an announcement related to the recent rumors."

He rubbed his nose, displaying an emotion of sorrow.

"Due to inactivity from House Orlen, the rumors have exploded out of control, sparking unease among our people, and I apologize for that."

Looking at his face, no one would have guessed that he was the reason the rumors in House Orlen’s territory spread to the entire Flenn Kingdom.

Those rumors were the wick to an explosion, and Alaric intended to light that wick today.

The public continued listening in silence.

"However, I must ask everyone to trust House Orlen as we didn’t deliberately keep silent. We simply did not want to present false facts to calm down our subjects.

"Everything we do, it’s for the benefit of our people."

Two middle aged men were sitting in a tavern, listening to Alaric’s speech while they conversed. They were officials dispatched by the royal family to conduct territory inspection, they had just arrived today.

"He is not as useless as the information suggested."

"His bare minimum competency would hardly change anything now. With rumors all around the kingdom, there’s nothing he can do to change the fate of House Orlen.

"It might’ve been manageable if the rumors were contained in their territory but House Orlen’s ascendency to a ducal house would be much more difficult now."

"Yes. The whole kingdom now knows about the rumor. Even if they somehow manage to prove those rumors false, they would need an achievement to wash away the lingering scars the rumors would leave behind in their reputation."

A few buildings away from them, a middle aged man sipped on a beverage. He was a spy from House Yuglev.

While listening to Alaric, he inwardly sneered.

Kid, no matter what you do, your house isn’t going to get a promotion anymore.

Alaric didn’t know what was happening, and even if he did, he couldn’t have cared less at this moment. He simply continued.

"The rumors were true, there were indeed unknown people in our territory.

"But worry not, the reason House Orlen didn’t make a statement was because we were busy eliminating those unknown individuals."

Alaric paused to take a breath before his voice rose sharply as he spoke.

"I must make it clear that we’ve found out the identity of those unknown individuals.

"They are the Flenn Kingdom’s greatest enemies. A treacherous, disgusting, slimy, but nevertheless, a powerful group of people."

By now, some among the public had confused expressions, some had looks of realization, while some had horrified expressions.

But Alaric didn’t care as he punched his fist into empty air, his voice containing pure rage and force.

"BUT WHO ARE WE?! HOUSE ORLEN!! THE HOUSE WHICH DEFENDS THE SOUTH WESTERN BORDERS ALONE!!!

"EVEN IF THE ULYT KINGDOM MANAGED TO INFILTRATE OUR TERRITORIES DUE TO TRAITORS, WE STILL KILLED THEM!!!"

At that moment, Grok used a spell model again.

Spell Model - Colossal Grasp

Multiple hands of earth tore out from the ground before heading towards his carriage. There, Alice opened the storage compartment and threw the corpses to the earthen hands.

They were the corpses Alaric had tasked Zephyr to bring from the border. Since the entire border was under Marchioness Orlen’s control, giving away a few corpses was a minor task.

One by one, the earthen hands rose to the air with corpses hanging from their grasp.

"YES! THESE UNKNOWN INDIVIDUALS WERE FROM THE ULYT KINGDOM! AND THEY ARE DEAD!"

As soon as he finished speaking, before anyone could even cause trouble, the public yelled in unison.

"LONG LIVE HOUSE ORLEN!!!"

"VICTORY TO HOUSE ORLEN!!!"

After a few seconds, Alaric spoke again. This time his voice held traces of exhaustion and desperation.

"House Orlen apologizes to everyone for making a statement so late. But please understand, we are stretched thin.

"The south western border is defended by House Orlen alone. We have given our all to defend the Flenn Kingdom while holding nothing back!

"So when the Ulyt Kingdom managed to infiltrate due to traitors at the border, it took time for us to finally kill all of them since our main force was at the border!"

While the public was sympathising with House Orlen, one of the people yelled, questioning Alaric.

"Young Lord! You said that the Ulyt Kingdom managed to infiltrate because of traitors at the border. But you said that the border is handled by House Orlen alone.

"Do you mean House Orlen has traitors?"

Alaric smiled. This man was one he had planted. He put on an expression of rage as he replied to the man.

"House Orlen has no traitors! Marchioness Orlen has found out that they were House Yuglev’s men, and she has already killed them!"

Naturally, the corpses of House Yuglev’s men were taken by Zephyr to the border.

Just when everyone was in a state of disbelief, Alaric yelled, this time at his highest possible voice.

"I ASK THE ROYAL FAMILY TO DISPATCH REINFORCEMENT AT THE SOUTH WESTERN BORDER SO THAT THE SITUATION DOESN’T REPEAT ELSE THE NATIONAL SECURITY IS AT RISK.

"HOUSE ORLEN CAN ONLY DEFEND THE BORDER ALONE FOR SO LONG BEFORE TRAITORS OF FLENN KINGDOM SABOTAGE US.

"I ASK THE ROYAL FAMILY TO TAKE PITY ON THE DEFENDERS OF FLENN KINGDOM AND SEND REINFORCEMENT AND PUNISH THE TRAITORS!"

As Alaric finished his speech and the public erupted in agreement, the spies of various houses couldn’t react for a long time.

The two officials from the royal family had their pupils constricted in disbelief, while the spy from House Yuglev had crushed the cup in his hand.

When these people looked at Alaric, gone was the young lord who they held in contempt.

In place of that was a massive beast opening its maw wide, ready to crush every opposition in front of it.

This madman had elevated a title upgrade to an issue of national security! Utter Insanity! Complete Chaos!

If Alaric succeeded, House Orlen would elevate to a duchy and also get a majority of their army back from the border.

This was called having one’s cake and eating it whole!

But the question was, could this madman succeed?
