First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 2843 - Worse than a Dog

Chapter 2843 – Worse than a Dog

A thin man with graying temples appeared soundlessly in front of Lu Hongpao. He clenched his hand into a fist and attacked casually.

It was a simple punch, natural and plain, without the slightest flourish. It was like a waterfall descending from the heavens or leaves dancing in the wind, like just another part of nature. It was the very picture of “the Dao following nature.”

This was the Huangting Fortune Seal.

It was just a punch, yet fortune seemed to follow it. Fighting it was like contending with the fortune power of heaven and earth!

And it was aiming for Lu Hongpao.

Meanwhile, a large hand descended from the heavens and enveloped Su Yi. The attacker was a middle-aged Daoist with a willowy beard, a Daoist crown, and a fly whisk. This was Heavenly Sovereign Changhen of the Court of the Southern Heavens.

He appeared out of nowhere, yin and yang interweaving beneath his feet, as if he were walking at the intersection of two starkly different spacetimes. It seemed he was close at hand, yet he simultaneously seemed like he was somewhere else entirely.

The same was true of the giant hand closing in on Su Yi. Yin and yang interwove, then split over its palm, like the parting of purity and filth, creating two realms: one Yin, one Yang.

It was just a hand, yet it seemed to encompass two spatial portals leading to two separate realms.

Barely any time had passed since that calamitous power of the natural order had slammed them to the ground. Everything happened practically simultaneously.

Lu Hongpao and Su Yi had yet to steady themselves on their feet, but they were already in grave peril!

It was just too terrifying. Anyone beneath the Heavenly Sovereign level would have been eliminated before they even realized what was happening.

Su Yi had the Light of the Heart, so he just barely managed to sense the attack before it hit.

Unfortunately, that was the extent of it; sensing it didn’t mean he could block it. The Heavenly Sovereigns’ abilities were just too terrifying, like tribulations born of Heaven’s Will.

But it was then that Lu Hongpao let out a burst of derisive laughter.

Before Su Yi could ponder any further, searing, blood-red sword light ignited before his very eyes. It was like the eruption of a long-pent-up volcano, burning and refining the sky, ripping heaven and earth to pieces, and eradicating the Grand Dao. There were no words to describe how terrifying it was.

Su Yi could just barely discern that the hand enveloping him had shattered. Heavenly Sovereign Changhen roared in shock and fury, then retreated explosively.

At the same time, a swath of blood-red sword qi slammed into Heavenly Sovereign Wen, forcing him back!

Someone seized Su Yi, then shot through the world, cleaved open by blood-red sword light.

By the time the world came back into focus, Su Yi discovered that he’d returned to that endless stretch of stars.

The Sevendeaths Wasteland had vanished.

Heavenly Sovereign Yaoguang stood in the distance on his golden platform, his expression dark.

Heavenly Sovereign Changhen stood beside him, shocked and furious.

Heavenly Sovereign Wen’s long hair was disheveled, and there was now a startling gash on his chest. Blood gushed from the wound. The split flesh wriggled as it knit back together, but his face was nonetheless pallid, and he didn’t look happy.

Another figure stood behind the three others, a man in black. He looked identical to Di E, and countless black talismans hovered around him, making him seem like a ruler shrouded in darkness. This was none other than Heavenly Sovereign E.

Su Yi glanced beside him and saw Lu Hongpao smile with smug pride. “You tried to steal a chicken, only to lose the grain you used for bait. Were we fighting one-on-one, no matter which one of you I was up against, I’d have taken your head by now!”

Then, she patted Su Yi on the shoulder. “Hey, good brother. Those spirit pearls really came in handy. Haha!”

Her delight would have been readily apparent to anyone.

Su Yi quickly understood. During that incomparably perilous ambush, Lu Hongpao used the spirit pearls to sense the hidden danger well in advance.

Thus, she’d feigned weakness, letting that first calamitous attempt strike her to fool her opponents into thinking she couldn’t fight back.

In truth, she had a powerful attack ready for them. When Heavenly Sovereigns Wen and Changhen attacked, she counterattacked, breaking through Heavenly Sovereign Yaoguang’s Sevendeaths Wasteland and injuring Heavenly Sovereigns Wen and Changhen!

The spirit pearls? When the Heavenly Sovereigns heard that, they instantly understood what was going on.

“How on earth did you manage to refine our avatars of will?” Heavenly Sovereign Wen furrowed his brow in confusion.

Lu Hongpao blinked. “Guess.”

“Hmph! It doesn’t matter,” said Heavenly Sovereign Wen. “By yourself, you have no hope of protecting Su Yi! If you dare risk it all to save him, we’ll strip you of your Eternal Throne and plunge you into the abyss!”

He and the other three Heavenly Sovereigns seethed with murderous intent. The majesty of a sovereign enveloped the entire stretch of stars. Many of the stars even shattered, unable to withstand the pressure.

The blue skies of the Literati Continent darkened as black, baleful light spread like ink. It was the middle of the day, yet it seemed as if they’d been plunged into the darkness of an eternal night. Beneath the darkened skies and the fragments of shattered stars, those on the ground could dimly discern the figures of several Heavenly Sovereigns, like the endlessly enormous rulers of Heaven’s Will.

This unbelievable vision shook the entire Literati Continent, causing a massive disturbance. Everyone was terrified and ill at ease. Even the Heavenly Monarchs at the pinnacle of the Literati Continent’s cultivation world were overcome with fright.

A battle between sovereigns!

Numerous Heavenly Sovereigns had appeared above the Literati Continent, and they were currently locked in fierce combat! Who had provoked so many Heavenly Sovereigns into battle?

There was no need for the onlookers to even guess. The onlookers knew who it was.

The Red-Robed Heavenly Sovereign!

They also thought of Su Yi, who’d recently revealed his identity in the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone.

There was no doubt about it. This was an attempt to intercept and kill Lu Hongpao and Su Yi. Moreover, multiple Heavenly Sovereigns were taking action personally.

The battle raged beneath the firmament, yet it affected the entire continent. It was obvious how great a disturbance this battle between sovereigns was causing.

“Risk it all?” Lu Hongpao smiled. “If I risk it all, I’ll at least be able to drag one of you down with me. Care to try me?”

Su Yi couldn’t help but rub his nose. This is a clash between Heavenly Sovereigns, yet they’re still competing to see who’s more ruthless.

“Lu Hongpao, someone of your intelligence should realize that we wouldn’t have come here in person if we weren’t assured of our success,” said Heavenly Sovereign E. “Why remain stubborn on account of a wicked creature like Su Yi? Is it worth it?”

Lu Hongpao said flatly, “It isn’t up to you to decide whether it’s worth it or not. I’ll be interested to see how the four of you think you can stop me.”

“Who said you’re only up against the four of them?” A burst of laughter rang out, like the clear, grating hum of a sword.

A man in black appeared, accompanying this voice. He was thin, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. His long hair was disheveled, and he carried a massive longsword on his back. Countless minute, dazzling, blood-red glyphs surged around the blade.

Boom!

The endless stars shook as he appeared, and an indescribable pressure of the Dao of the Sword swept outward. Shockingly, it suppressed even the Heavenly Sovereigns’ majesty.

Lu Hongpao’s eyes narrowed as she transmitted, “That guy must be an expert of the Far Shore of Destiny. He’s suppressed most of his aura. If he hadn’t, he’d have suffered a backlash from the natural order of the River of Destiny by now. Still, he’s strong enough to make even Heavenly Sovereigns cautious.”

Su Yi’s heart sank. He could just about guess that the swordsman in black was Hei Ya, the traitor of Sword Sovereign City!

Indeed, a moment later, the Heavenly Sovereigns bowed to the man in black in greeting. Some called him “Fellow Daoist Hei Ya,” while others called him “Emissary Hei Ya.” The titles varied, but the name was the same.

Su Yi instantly realized that the true man behind the curtain had never been the Malevolent Sword Venerate; Hei Ya was behind both the trap in the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone and the disaster facing them now. Only an expert from the Far Shore of Destiny could have convinced four Heavenly Sovereigns to work together.

Heavenly Sovereigns were like supreme rulers of the Eternal Heavens Domain, but all of them longed to transcend the River of Destiny and reach its Far Shore. The disparity between Heavenly Sovereigns and experts of the Far Shore of Destiny was thus readily apparent.

And Hei Ya was one such expert!

“No need to be so polite. Here on the River of Destiny, we are all fellow Daoists, and I, Hei Ya, am no more than an errand boy. I’m unworthy of such respect,” Hei Ya said with a dismissive wave and a faint smile.

He spoke politely, but he faced the Heavenly Sovereigns with bone-deep pride.

Next, Hei Ya looked at Su Yi. A grin spread across his face.

Beneath the onlookers’ flabbergasted gazes, Hei Ya clasped his fists with exaggerated politeness and bowed sarcastically. “Hei Ya, the exile, greets you, Big Boss!”

His voice shook the stars.

The Heavenly Sovereigns were flabbergasted. Big Boss? What’s he on about? How could an expert of the Far Shore of Destiny possibly address Su Yi as his boss?

When Hei Ya straightened his back, his grin was nowhere to be found. On the contrary, he sighed deeply. “Big Boss, oh, Big Boss, how did you fall so far? You were so impressive back then. What happened to you? Back then, a single word from you was enough to get me cast out like a dog! But now, it seems to me that you’re the dog now!”

Hei Ya’s face filled with exaggerated grief. “No, you’re even lower than a dog!”

Su Yi looked at him in silence and said nothing.

Lu Hongpao furrowed her brow. How could she fail to realize that the black-robed sword cultivator’s grief and politeness were an act, and that he was being deliberately insulting?

She frowned. That hideous grin on his face… sure is vile!

But she could also sense Hei Ya’s bone-deep hatred for Su Yi. After all, he made no attempt to disguise it!

Haha! I was cast out like a dog, but now, you’re even lower than a dog! The world sure is unpredictable. It’s enough to make anyone wistful.” Hei Ya grinned again. It seemed he had a bellyful of pent-up resentment, and he’d finally found someone to vent it on; he looked extraordinarily excited, even frenzied and twisted.

Lu Hongpao said suddenly. “Strange. Where’d you find this mad dog? And why are you so polite? What, have you really made yourselves a dog’s servants?”

She’d just insulted them all at once.

The Heavenly Sovereigns stood there, expressions shifting, but none lost their temper.

As rulers of the Eternal Heavens Domain, they respected Hei Ya’s background, but they weren’t afraid of his combat strength. They’d actually have been delighted if Hei Ya was willing to fight Lu Hongpao in their stead. Who wasn’t happy to borrow another’s blade to kill their enemies?

But they knew not to look down on this unbridled, eccentric sword cultivator. If they pissed him off, not even they would get off lightly.

When Hei Ya heard Lu Hongpao’s comments, he was unwittingly stunned. A moment later, he burst into uproarious laughter. “Excellent. You’ve got guts! That’ll make killing you all the more satisfying!”
