The burned strip curled away from the drawer.

Omina set it flat with two fingers. The paper lifted again as soon as she let go, shedding black grit into the groove where the drawer met the desk. JJ tore two strips from the spine of her ledger and pressed them over the corners. The cold came through the tape fast enough to stiffen her knuckles.

"That paper is making a complaint with furniture attached."

The tape held. The strip buckled under it, but it stayed where JJ put it.

Heissman leaned in far enough for his shadow to cross the first forming line. Omina tapped the wood with the end of her hilt.

"Read from your side of the drawer, Heissman."

He straightened and kept both hands where everyone could see them.

"I can read from here without donating my face."

Ty stood one pace behind the boot mark Yun-Jin had drawn for him. The mark was chalk, nothing more. That was why it mattered. If he crossed it, the room would treat the choice as something he had offered.

Zunoder noticed the mark. The old body's mouth made patience look polite.

"You are treating the subject like unstable evidence."

Omina kept her attention on the strip.

"The room keeps trying to spend him, so I am correcting the angle."

The burned paper split down its center. It opened without tearing, the inner layer blacker than the outside. A column formed inside the burn. The chain existed. Full access required a showing of purpose. The first index named an assignment file, a routing authority, and lower signers still sealed.

Ty read lower signers twice.

Hands, then people.

That helped and hurt at the same time. A machine had rules. People had excuses. People could touch a paper, call it work, and leave a body inside the result.

Zunoder stepped near the boot mark. Yun-Jin moved with him, half a step only, placing her body where Ty could see the path before choosing it.

"Purpose has already been shown through public return and rescue."

The drawer warmed under the strip. Current body response tried to enter as proof. Omina laid her hilt across the forming line before it thickened.

"Public response can support later purpose, but it cannot open an upstream assignment by itself."

Zunoder turned his head toward the witness behind the chair.

"The witness says he came when fear called him."

The taped bracelet vanished under the witness's other hand. Jade saw it through the shelter feed and sent a warning before Zunoder could turn the movement into another tool. Waddell backed her with a tighter floor-only limit that kept wrist and face out.

Zunoder accepted both limits with the patience of a man collecting better weapons.

"Then the current subject can answer for his own response."

The words aimed at Ty.

His hand tightened. Bone pressed against bone inside his fist. Yun-Jin stayed close and left his wrist alone. That was harder to ignore than a restraint.

Ty looked at the strip, at the words trying to make public rescue reach backward into old assignment.

"I came because people were hurt and nobody moved."

The hall tried to trim that to response to hurt. Omina struck the drawer once with her hilt and forced the rest underneath it. Later subject statement. Old assignment unproven.

The correction gave Ty very little. It still mattered. A small wedge in the right place could keep a file from closing around his throat.

The first index line opened.

Mercy General overflow response table.

JJ bent over the drawer and read it twice.

"Table is an ugly word for a person."

Heissman shut his eyes long enough for shame to show.

"It is an administrative word that makes ugly things movable."

The strip produced the next line in smaller handwriting.

Use when primary staff absent.

Ty felt the sentence land where his sternum would have been. Use when. No chair pulled out. No hand offered. No question placed in front of a body before the body became an answer. Only absence, staffing, and a file built to push something into the empty slot.

The bracelet behind the chair scraped against wood. Zunoder softened his voice before using the sound.

"The table supports the fear-call pattern and the public response."

Omina kept her hilt across the strip.

"The table supports staff absence and later use language."

"It also supports response under pressure from repeated calls."

"That argument enters after use without consent enters beside it."

Zunoder accepted the added phrase too easily. Ty watched his face and understood the damage. Use without consent still contained use. The old file could carry both shame and leverage in the same hand.

The drawer entered a purpose indicator under staff absence. The boot mark darkened near Ty's toes, warning that subject proximity could increase assignment weight if he moved closer.

Yun-Jin looked at his feet.

"Read from where you are standing, and keep standing there."

Ty looked back at her.

"I can read without stepping into their trap."

"Then prove it with your feet before arguing."

He stayed. The choice irritated him, which made it feel like his.

JJ tucked her marked wrist behind the ledger, but her fingers had gone stiff around the pencil. She nodded toward the sealed lower column.

"Tell us what opens the signers without feeding him."

The drawer answered in a narrow line. Cost-bearing challenge, or accepted purpose showing.

Zunoder turned to Ty.

"Accept the purpose and the chain opens cleanly."

Ty read the words again. Utility response, staff absence, use when. The ugly part was the outline fitting too many things he had done. He had come when people were late, scared, missing, hurt, or too tired to keep each other alive. He could hate the table and still recognize the shape it wanted.

His fingers loosened.

"I reject the purpose because the file never asked."

The strip recorded his refusal at low weight.

Low weight. The room loved that insult. It took something out of him, made it smaller, then congratulated itself for keeping a record.

JJ pointed her pencil at Zunoder before his face finished changing.

"Make that expression useful or remove it from evidence."

His face returned to polite calm.

Omina studied the low-weight line.

"The old file predates current awareness. His refusal enters, but it cannot open the signer chain. We need a challenge that pays."

Jade's next shelter message arrived without decoration. Shelter pays nothing with witness access. Waddell followed with the floor-feed limit again, tighter this time, holding child, witness, and old footage out.

Kieran's gold light stayed low near the moved cot. Ty saw the edge of it and kept his feet on the safe side of Yun-Jin's mark.

Heissman lifted the half-used page from the earlier design review. The paper shook once before he pinned it under his palm.

"The design witness can challenge the mechanism at expert cost."

Omina turned toward him.

"Name the cost before the drawer names it for you."

The strip answered first. A design witness challenge would reduce his expert authority for future design claims.

JJ looked from the strip to Heissman.

"It wants the chair you keep pretending is just posture."

Heissman gave her a tired look.

"It wants the credibility that lets people excuse my posture."

JJ almost smiled. The room gave her no space for it.

Heissman took the pencil. His hand shook again. This time he let everyone see it before he wrote.

"Utility response under staff absence describes a use case. It cannot prove the responder consented to becoming the use."

The burned edge brightened, then settled. The challenge entered. Heissman's expert authority reduced for future design claims. The phrase tried to make the cost neat. He looked at it long enough for neatness to fail.

JJ watched him for one beat, then looked away before pity created another mess.

The strip opened a second column. Lower signer one stayed sealed until margin status resolved.

A fold lifted at the bottom of the assignment file.

Something had been written under it and pushed out of sight.

Ty wanted one bone finger under the fold. He wanted to rip the paper open and make the old file pay for hiding even one more thing. Yun-Jin shifted beside him, and he kept his feet still while Omina leaned over the lifted edge.

She named it for the record.

"The hidden margin is now the active dispute."

Zunoder looked pleased again.

"Margins are where weak evidence goes to survive."

JJ opened her ledger with her unmarked hand.

"Then somebody cared enough to hide it there."
