The margin clung to the page.

JJ slid the corner of her ledger under the lifted fold and used it like a dull knife. Cold ran through the leather so quickly her fingers jerked. She kept the ledger there anyway, wedged between the main text and the sentence somebody had hidden where a clerk's thumb could cover it.

"That margin is behaving like furniture with a grudge."

Omina placed one hand over the ledger spine without pressing down.

"Move slowly, or the drawer will charge interest."

JJ looked at the fold, then at the thin frost forming on her pencil.

"It is a margin with bad manners, not a bomb."

Heissman watched the paper tighten around the ledger.

"Margins are where offices hide bombs they can deny owning."

JJ paused, because the sentence deserved a pause even from him.

"I dislike how useful that almost sounded today."

"Then keep disliking it while you read carefully."

Across the boot mark, Zunoder waited with both hands visible. The harmless pose suited him too well. Ty had started to hate that pose most, because Zunoder looked safest while the room worked for him.

The burned strip changed at the edge of the fold. The margin had been marked supplemental and low priority.

JJ bent closer until Omina caught the back of her jacket with two fingers.

"Supplemental is what offices call the part that bites later."

The sponsor seal warmed under JJ's sleeve. Ty saw the skin tighten around the mark before she turned her wrist away. He moved before thinking. Yun-Jin caught his wrist and held him behind the chalk line.

Ty looked at her hand.

"You already know I hate seeing that mark wake up."

Yun-Jin kept her grip light.

"I know, and your feet still stay behind mine."

JJ kept her back to both of them.

"I can hear concern becoming weather, and I reject the forecast."

Ty had no breath to hold, though his ribs still tried while Omina read the margin status twice. Her thumb stayed off the fold.

"We can leave it low. Forcing it into the main text may cost more than the sentence is worth."

JJ stared at the hidden edge.

"If somebody hid the sentence there, it already hurt somebody."

"Hidden can still be useless or bait today."

"Good. I was tired of useful gifts anyway."

The seal flashed through JJ's sleeve. Small black print crawled over the fabric, neat as office ink. Elevating the margin would degrade a second future priority objection. The first cost still had her wrist tender enough that she curled her fingers before she noticed.

Omina answered before JJ could.

"You lose a future objection if you lift it."

JJ gave a short laugh with nothing soft in it.

"My wrist has heard the offer, and I accept."

"Your next objection may fail when we need it."

"Then spend the next one before it dies quietly."

Ty pulled once against Yun-Jin's hand and stopped himself.

"You keep paying for paper that hates you."

JJ set the ledger edge deeper under the fold.

"Paper hates everyone. Mine invoices honestly at least."

The seal repeated the cost in darker print. Nobody told her to be brave. That helped more than praise would have. JJ hated praise when a room had already priced her wrist.

She confirmed before anyone could turn waiting into wisdom. White light cut through her sleeve. Her knees bent hard. She caught herself on the ledger and kept her other hand tucked against her ribs, away from Ty and away from pity.

The room leaned toward her pain.

Ty saw how easily the drawer turned hurt into a credential. Her wrist shook; the file took that shake as payment. A person could spend herself in here and still be recorded as procedure.

Ty made himself look at the margin. Anger only helped if it read.

The fold opened.

The hidden sentence sat in cramped handwriting, small enough to fit under a thumb and plain enough to survive any excuse made around it. It said B.H. responded best when the caller sounded afraid.

JJ read it once. The second read took color from her face.

"Best for which person standing near that word?"

The drawer gave no answer. The sentence cared about response, not the person making the sound.

Omina drew a narrow box around caller.

"Caller role stays separate from subject role here."

The route tried to pull the words together. She pressed the hilt down until the separation held.

JJ's voice flattened.

"I want one person in this sentence to remain a person."

The caller stayed protected from merger while the fear condition remained valid. That was the kind of win this room liked to offer. It kept one door closed and left another open with fresh oil on the hinge.

Behind the chair, the witness covered the taped bracelet with the other hand. On the shelter feed, Jade cut the camera tighter to the floor before anyone asked. Waddell's caption followed hers and kept the witness limit in place.

JJ touched the margin with the pencil tip.

"Best is carrying too much work for one word."

Heissman called it efficiency language first. JJ stared at him until he corrected himself.

"Use language is the uglier and more accurate term."

Omina entered the correction. The margin moved into main review. Caller fear became a used response condition, not a character trait, not consent, and not proof that a frightened person had meant to summon anything.

The drawer tried to soften used into indicated.

Omina kept her voice steady.

"The record says used because somebody used fear."

The word held after the drawer resisted long enough for everyone to feel it.

Zunoder stepped in as soon as the line settled.

"This proves tracked response, improved call method, and assigned use."

Each phrase sounded reasonable enough to pass through a committee. Ty looked at the tiny handwriting and saw the part no committee would have written plainly. Someone scared had called. Someone else had recorded that fear as a better handle.

"I hate the word responds more than best."

Zunoder tilted his head.

"Explain which part of the word offends you."

Ty pointed to the margin before the drawer could turn his anger into denial.

"It makes me sound like equipment waiting for a switch."

The subject objection entered at low weight. JJ, still pale, said low was becoming the room's favorite insult.

Heissman kept his eyes on the line.

"Low still keeps its foot in the door."

"Do not motivational poster me while my wrist is smoking."

"I mean the procedure, which sounds worse aloud."

"That is because procedure keeps earning the insult."

Omina looked at the margin, then at the first signature column.

"The hidden line helps Zunoder on pattern. It helps us on coercion and use without consent. Both enter."

Zunoder nodded as if the sentence had behaved fairly. JJ groaned Bell's name under her breath.

"Accuracy keeps hurting everyone with decent timing today."

Ty's hand closed.

"Leave Bell's word out of your mouth today."

Zunoder's gaze moved to him through the old face.

"Then stop leaving useful words where anyone can collect them."

Yun-Jin let go of Ty's wrist.

The surprise held him better than her hand had. He stayed behind the mark, angry and still.

"He wants your step more than your answer."

The margin darkened. The first lower signer unsealed by title before any name appeared.

Mercy General night routing. Shift supervisor.

The signature line stayed blank.

Omina frowned at the title.

"Why does the office arrive before the hand?"

Heissman answered quietly.

"Because the office mattered more than the person holding the pen."

The drawer accepted that too quickly. Office weight rose. Hand weight stayed sealed.

Zunoder turned the line toward Omina.

"Then the purpose came from Mercy, not one careless actor."

JJ held her wrist against her ribs.

"I paid to make the answer uglier again."

Omina shook her head.

"You paid to make the ugliness harder to hide."

The margin line moved into the main column beneath the Mercy title. Erebos marked the result without dressing it up. The coercive condition entered. Utility purpose strengthened.

Ty stared at the two lines. Both were true. Both cut in different directions.

JJ sat on the drawer edge before anyone warned her the wood might charge rent.

"Send the invoice after the next ugly sentence."

The drawer clicked under her.

The next fold opened by itself, showing a date from the same night as the old death intake.
