JJ's pencil came down on the shortcut line before the drawer finished brightening it.

The wood covered the words. The drawer glowed around it, offended by the ordinary shape of a pencil doing what a weapon would have made too dramatic.

JJ kept her wrist still.

The file had already taken pieces from Ty and tried to call the theft procedure. If this shortcut taught the room how to keep him alive while using him, he could survive and still lose himself.

"Before anyone calls that helpful, I am marking it dirty."

Zunoder looked at her hand.

"You have no authority to block an item path."

"Good. Then I am blocking it with bad manners."

Omina gave her one glance.

"Give me a basis that survives the joke."

JJ's mouth tightened. The joke had come first because pain made her reach for it, and she corrected course by pulling the pencil back to her own ledger sheet.

She wrote shortcut contamination at the top. Then she forced the definition into plain language where everyone could see it.

"A shortcut is contaminated when it gives the right answer by making him accept the frame that hurt him."

The drawer pulsed. Ty felt the refusal under the table, a little pressure like the room disliked sentences with a person inside them.

Then the sponsor ledger under JJ's wrist lit.

Her marked hand jerked against her ribs before she flattened her face. She had learned that trick from being watched. One flat angle. No begging. No fresh shape for the room to price.

The drawer took certainty anyway.

It entered a sponsor ledger mark against her and reduced her reliability on future shortcut objections.

JJ breathed through her teeth.

"That is a bad price for being correct."

Ty leaned forward before he meant to.

"The price already posted, so use the objection."

He hated that she was right enough for him to obey. Omina entered the claim before the drawer could turn JJ's pain into a reason to ignore her.

The contamination claim entered with degraded sponsor weight. Low to moderate.

JJ lifted her eyebrows.

"Low to moderate still means the door heard me."

Zunoder moved around the table with the answer he wanted the public to hear.

"The sponsor is protecting a preferred narrative from useful evidence."

He pointed toward the sealed line without touching the drawer.

"The item could answer whether the response route used distress, whether the caller had care standing, and whether the subject's title contains prior authority."

Omina's pen tapped once.

"You just described the contamination claim in cleaner shoes."

Zunoder turned toward her.

"Because it answers too much for your position."

"Because it answers by waking the thing that benefits from being asked."

The drawer accepted the narrow version after a pause. Contact might benefit the sealed authority.

Heissman looked relieved and ashamed at once.

"That warning belongs in the record before any rescue talk."

Jade's voice came from the shelter side, rough from a long night.

"Then it waits until rescue stops sounding like ownership."

Zunoder kept his attention on Ty.

"Every wait cuts down the proof you still need."

Ty was tired of that being true. The room kept shaving him down with options that made him pay to stay himself. Every refusal made the file heavier. Every useful answer arrived with a hook in it.

The drawer opened the shortcut path in prose instead of blocks, which made it worse. If the sealed authority woke, the caller's distress flag might open. The active absence in the finger record might be overridden by title completion. The Name route might face a superior authority.

JJ read the sequence and gave a dry laugh.

"That is a whole bad meal served on one tray."

Mara repeated the part that had hurt her.

"Title completion is the phrase I was afraid of."

Omina turned toward the shelter feed.

"Tell the room what that phrase costs a person."

Mara looked at Ty through the tablet.

"A door that completes a title skips the person under it."

Ty felt the sealed authority behind the line. Sleep made it quiet, not harmless. A thing could wait and still shape the room around its waiting.

Zunoder said the word he wanted to reduce.

"Subject preference cannot veto relevant authority in a live review."

Yun-Jin stepped into him with her voice, not her body.

"Preference is the wrong word for refusing overwrite."

Omina wrote the safer claim first. The subject had a non-override interest.

Zunoder's expression cooled.

"Interest, then, because the room fears the word right."

Omina reserved the stronger claim instead of spending it before the record could hold the weight.

"Reserve the right claim until the record can hold it."

The sponsor mark had spread half a line farther under JJ's skin, dark accounting instead of blood or ink. Ty kept looking because looking away felt like taking the discount.

"Stop spending your own mark for my proof."

JJ looked up.

"You keep refusing clean proof, so somebody has to mark why clean is dirty."

The drawer entered her statement with degraded weight.

JJ flipped it off under the table. Caelin's aide pretended to miss it. Waddell saw and approved in silence.

Ty wanted to tell her that Waddell's approval bought nothing back. He kept quiet because she already knew. That was the worst part of watching people help him now. The useful ones knew exactly what they were losing and spent it with their eyes open.

The public feed updated.

Caelin read the top line and grimaced.

"Bone Half is hiding the door because it proves he is the Demon King."

Jade looked toward his tablet.

"You limited the label and left them a silhouette."

"They built the face from the warning you left them."

JJ pressed her pencil into the page until the tip threatened to break.

"Of course they built a face from it."

The public inference entered as a claim people could repeat without learning anything.

The feed twisted the same rumor through title proof, royal class, and enemy succession. Each version made Ty smaller because the person kept falling out of the sentence, then louder because the title got easier to shout.

Caelin dragged one hand down his face on the feed.

"If I correct that too hard, I confirm the hook."

Jade answered before Omina could.

"Then correct the part that puts a child under a crown."

Waddell leaned closer to the tablet.

"Say there is no confirmed royal claim and no authorized search."

Caelin looked at the public queue on another screen. Ty could see the lines moving in the reflection of his glasses. Too many people trying to be first. Too many people treating a half sealed word as a prize.

"That leaves the door open for rumor traders."

Mara's voice came thin through the shelter feed.

"The door is open because the room keeps charging children rent."

The quiet after that carried enough weight for the drawer to use. It wrote the public correction option and placed a cost beside it.

Correcting title rumor would reduce immediate title attachment. It would also increase attention on missing authority details.

Zunoder had no need to smile. The room did that for him.

"Public recognition may attach to the hidden title through refusal."

Omina objected before the line settled.

"Recognition of rumor is not recognition of the person."

The drawer marked the rumor recognition unstable.

Unstable still had weight. Ty felt it crawl at the edges of the boot mark while the titles moved around him. Skeleton King, Demon King, Bone Half, and B.H. all tried to dress him while everyone argued about the fabric.

The sealed path brightened again.

JJ put her pencil across it, slower this time.

"Dirty proof stays dirty even when the room is scared."

The drawer pushed past her pencil. Ty's decision was required.

Omina turned to him. This time, she could only make the cost visible.

Ty looked at the shortcut line.

It promised help, an answer for the caller, and a way to crush Zunoder for a while.

That was why the line was dangerous.

This trap understood hunger. It held out the thing he wanted most and made patience look like cowardice. Restraint began to look like leaving someone behind. The line counted on him hating the sealed flag more than he feared the hand under it.

Ty looked at JJ's wrist.

Her mark had gone darker near the knuckle, a dull patch that would hurt later after she was alone and no one could use the pain as evidence.

Mara had stopped asking the file for mercy. That scared him more than crying would have because people stopped asking when they knew what the answer cost.

Then he looked at Omina.

She gave him nothing soft. No rescue line. No clean way to feel brave.

"Choose the rule they learn from you, not only the answer they deny you."

The drawer accepted her statement as advice, not instruction.

Ty was grateful for the difference.

"Do not wake it while it profits from being asked."

The refusal went into the record, leaving the caller's distress flag sealed, the finger absence contested, and the public rumor stronger than before.

JJ closed her eyes.

She had known the cost. She had paid to make sure he saw it.

Omina added the basis beneath the refusal. Non-override interest. Shortcut contamination. No tool status for stronger sealed authority.

The drawer gave the refusal low to moderate weight because JJ had already burned part of her mark into the room.

Zunoder bowed his head slightly.

"Then the subject proceeds without his strongest tool."

Ty felt the boot mark bite again.

"If it is stronger than me, it is not my tool yet."

The drawer accepted the sentence with reluctance and opened the public challenge beneath it.
