Chapter 197: Chapter 197: Blood-faced Lizard
In the corridor to the living quarters.
FZZT~
The overhead lights flickered, and terrifying claw marks covered the walls.
At that moment, Long Ming stopped and looked down. The filthy metal floor was covered in a viscous, dark-red liquid, making it difficult to walk.
He raised his gun, held his breath, and continued deeper inside. The path was littered with bone fragments and tattered scraps of clothing.
The surroundings were eerily quiet, enough to make one’s skin crawl.
CRUNCH~
Just then, the faint sound of chewing bones came from around a corner in the corridor ahead.
Long Ming cautiously crept to the corner and peeked to his left. He saw a small Blood Breath Dog gnawing on the bone fragments on the ground.
He quickly scanned the Blood Breath Dog’s surroundings. Once he confirmed there were no other monsters, he gripped his Death Fang.
The next instant, he unleashed his full Power and charged forward like a phantom.
The small Blood Breath Dog had only just sensed the danger
when Long Ming’s blade plunged directly into its heart.
CRACK!
"AWOO~"
With a final, desperate howl, the Blood Breath Dog collapsed, unwilling to accept its fate.
After pulling out his Death Fang, Long Ming impassively continued toward the living quarters ahead.
He had to reach the area where Rein lived first. The entrance to the secret vault was located behind Rein’s room.
Long Ming pressed deeper, passing through one office area after another. The corridor was lined with rooms on both sides.
He scanned his surroundings with his peripheral vision, cautiously feeling his way forward without alerting any nearby Blood Breath Beasts.
Just then, he saw a large metal door on the right side of the corridor ahead, slightly ajar.
Long Ming reached out and gave the heavy metal door a push inward.
CREAK~
The metal door swung open.
Long Ming glanced inside. It was a storage room for miscellaneous items, and it looked quite well-stocked.
However, he didn’t have time to search it now.
So he continued onward.
Time ticked by, and he drew closer and closer to his destination.
But just as Long Ming was about to reach Living Area A, his thermal imaging revealed a massive creature lying at the entrance.
Long Ming’s body instantly stiffened. He hid around the corner, observing it carefully.
It was a Blood Breath Beast, five meters long, with the body of a lizard and a deformed human face. Its entire body was covered in red pustules, its claws were incredibly sharp, and it had a long, slender tail.
Long Ming recognized it at a glance: an elite-grade Blood Breath Beast, the Blood-Faced Lizard.
He raised his wristband to check the creature’s data.
Blood-Faced Lizard.
Traits: Cunning, extremely agile, poisonous blood. Weaknesses: Head, heart. Fears: Bright light.
...
Long Ming glanced at the data, feeling troubled.
With his current equipment, trying to take down a full-health, elite-grade Blood Breath Beast head-on would be incredibly difficult.
Most importantly, if he spent too much time fighting it here and attracted other Blood Breath Beasts, he’d be done for.
The problem was, this thing just had to be blocking the entrance to Living Area A.
And he absolutely had to get past it.
As Long Ming thought this over, his expression shifted, and he quickly began formulating a strategy.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through his mind, and he quickly recalled the path he had just taken.
With that thought, Long Ming decisively drew his silenced Viper, aimed at the prone Blood-Faced Lizard from a distance, and pulled the trigger!
PFFT~
The bullet instantly struck the Blood-Faced Lizard’s head.
EEE~
The Blood-Faced Lizard scrambled to its feet with a sharp screech, its crimson eyes instantly locking onto Long Ming.
Long Ming gave it the middle finger.
As if provoked, the Blood-Faced Lizard pushed off with all four limbs and charged toward Long Ming at extreme speed.
Long Ming turned and ran for his life.
But the Blood-Faced Lizard was incredibly fast, closing half the distance in the blink of an eye.
But Long Ming didn’t panic. Instead, he pulled out a frag grenade, armed it, and threw it on the ground behind him.
BOOM!
The Blood-Faced Lizard was caught in the blast, and its speed dropped.
It let out an enraged roar at Long Ming.
Long Ming kept running forward, but he suddenly felt something was wrong. He glanced back and saw the Blood-Faced Lizard had crawled onto the ceiling and was rapidly pursuing him from above.
"Damn it!"
Long Ming finally understood why the data file said what it did. ’This thing really is cunning.’
’If it’s chasing me like this, a normal frag grenade won’t do anything to it. Cooking the grenade is too dangerous; even a one-second delay means I won’t hit it.’
But Long Ming didn’t panic. On the contrary, his gaze grew even more determined.
He pushed the power assist of his exoskeleton mechanical armor to maximum and sprinted down the corridor with all his might.
Just then, the Blood-Faced Lizard leaped down from the ceiling, pouncing toward Long Ming.
Long Ming threw himself into a desperate dive to dodge.
THUD~
The Blood-Faced Lizard landed on empty air.
Long Ming quickly scrambled forward, but the Blood-Faced Lizard was right on his tail, moving with incredible speed.
Just as it was about to catch him, Long Ming suddenly veered and dashed into the storage room.
The Blood-Faced Lizard followed without hesitation, instantly trapping Long Ming inside.
Long Ming spun around and raised his gun, aiming it at the Blood-Faced Lizard.
Seeing that Long Ming had nowhere to run, a human-like expression of excitement appeared on the Blood-Faced Lizard’s face as it flicked out its red tongue for a lick.
Long Ming watched the Blood-Faced Lizard calmly.
The next second, the Blood-Faced Lizard opened its mouth, let out a roar, and charged viciously at Long Ming, ready to tear him to shreds.
At that moment, Long Ming suddenly pulled out a flashbang, armed it, and threw it!
POP~
A blinding light instantly erupted.
The Blood-Faced Lizard’s eyes, seared by the intense light, shut instinctively.
Thanks to his helmet’s protection, Long Ming was only slightly blinded.
Relying on his memory from before he was blinded, he took a risk and dashed past the Blood-Faced Lizard’s right side.
The Blood-Faced Lizard instinctively sensed Long Ming rushing past on its right and blindly swung its tail in that direction.
Long Ming vaguely saw the tail sweeping toward him. He leaped up to dodge the attack, landed steadily on his feet, and quickly rushed for the storage room door.
By now, the Blood-Faced Lizard’s vision was gradually returning. It turned in a fury to pursue Long Ming, launching itself forward in a powerful leap.
Long Ming’s eyes narrowed. The instant he was out, he slammed the metal door shut.
THUD~
The Blood-Faced Lizard crashed heavily into the metal door of the storage room, the massive impact echoing throughout the entire corridor.
"Phew~"
Long Ming let out a long breath. ’Finally safe,’ he thought.
But the Blood-Faced Lizard didn’t give up. It began ramming into the metal door repeatedly.
Seeing this, Long Ming quickly ran deeper into the corridor.
...
「Toward the armory.」
Eric led his subordinates as they fought their way forward, quickly killing one Blood Breath Beast after another that stood in their way.
The weapons they carried had all been replaced with ones scavenged from the ruins of this world, so they packed quite a punch.
However, as they advanced, the commotion they made grew louder, and the resistance grew stronger.
Swarms of Blood Corpse Beasts and Blood Breath Dogs came rushing out.
Seeing this, Eric raised his hand and gave the order.
"Heavy weapons!"
His subordinates shouldered their rocket launchers and fired round after round at the monsters blocking their path.
Numerous soldiers pulled out frag grenades and portable incendiary bombs and threw them forward.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Massive explosions erupted, and raging flames engulfed the entire area.
