Maybe becoming an adventurer wasn’t such a terrible idea after all, that was the first thought that crossed my mind when I opened my eyes the next morning, i gad forgotten where i was and was genuinely surprised when i woke up to a luxurious expanse.

For several seconds I stared at the ceiling above me, it was very white and there were decorative patterns carved around the edges and the chandelier that hung overhead looked like it cost more than every piece of furniture I had ever owned combined not that i ever owned any...well, if we are counting the estate i did have properties, they were not that expensive but they could fetch me a good sum if i decided to.

I looked around.The suite.

I lifted my head, Elias was already dressed, of course he was, he stood near the enormous window fastening the last button of his shirt while reading the mission booklet we’d been given the previous day, his hair was still slightly messy.

"Good morning"

He said and glanced over.

"Good morning" i said smiling.

I grabbed a pillow and threw it at him, he caught it and threw it back harder. It hit my face and i fell back on the bed playfully.

"You know," I said sitting up, "normal people don’t wake up and immediately start reading mission reports."

"Normal people also don’t get themselves kidnapped by underground assassin organizations."

I stared at him, he smiled and i smiled back, I liked the man attached to it considerably more than I was willing to admit, I pushed the blankets aside and climbed out of bed, my body complained immediately, I stopped, Elias looked up from the booklet.

"Something wrong?"

"No."

"You made a face."

"I always make faces."

"Yeah but i know you made this one for a specific reason."

I glared at him, he stared back then his mouth twitched.

"You’re blaming me aren’t you?."

" Well...not exactly." It was 100 percent his fault but i won’t give him all the blame i afterall made the choice of opening my legs for him.

Elias laughed and returned to his report, I grabbed a shirt from the chair and pulled it over my head, i sniffed the air once and caught the arof something sweet and spicy.

"Hold on, something smells good"

I followed the scent and it led me toward the dining room, a covered table was waiting, I stopped.

"Is that?"

"Breakfast Yup!."

I lifted the lid, my eyes widened, there were eggs, bread, roasted meat, fruit, pastries, several different kinds of drinks and it smelled so good I immediately forgot whatever complaint I had been preparing, I looked at Elias, he was still reading.

"Are you seeing this?"

"Yes."

"They brought all this for us?"

"Yes while you were asleep."

I pulled out a chair.

"I officially love being A-rank."

Elias lowered the booklet and shook his head, I filled my plate immediately, He himself came to the dining to eat too...for a while we ate in silence and it was strangely peaceful i hadn’t realized how much i missed it until then.

Eventually Elias had to ruin it by placing the booklet on the table.

"Ready?"

I looked at him over my cup.

"For what?"

"The mission."

I sighed.

"Can you let me finish my meal first?"

"You could multitask this is not a new thing for you"

I groaned, frustrated..."fine"

He turned the booklet toward me

"Fine?"

"We’re in a new city."

I stood.

"We should see it."

"We have work."

"We can work and see the city."

"That’s not how investigations work."

"we can multitask." I said.

He stared at me, I smiled knowingly.

"You coming?"

He sighed.

"let’s go."

Veyrhold was even more beautiful in daylight, I’d seen the city the previous evening but been overwhelmed to notice the details of the city, now I understood why people called it the Green City, trees were everywhere, some grew directly through the streets, others formed enormous canopies over entire walkways, flowering vines climbed walls, small gardens appeared between shops, even the stone towers had greenery hanging from their balconies, it felt completely different from Ravenport, Ravenport always seemed to be hiding something, Veyrhold didn’t, it was loud, bright and alive.

"You like it." Elias asked after catching me staring

"I very much do." I admitted with excitement.

He smiled.

"Thought so, i could literally see you gawking"

"Jerk"

We passed an equipment shop, I stopped, Elias continued walking for another few steps before realizing I wasn’t beside him, he turned to see me staring through the window, there was a sword displayed inside, it wasn’t particularly flashy, it had a simple black hilt, a silver blade, but there was a powerful magical glow running along the edge,i could see it clearly.

"You know that’s probably going to be very expensive," Elias said.

I looked at him.

"You know how much it costs?"

"Judging from the powerful mana erupting from it i would probably say in the hundreds..."

I could do that, i still had guild money...it would be affordable...we entered the shop, the merchant behind the counter immediately noticed my A-rank plaque, his posture changed.

"Welcome, sir."

"Hi, i am intrested in that balde over there how much for it?" I pointed towards the window where the blade was resting.

He looked towards the blade and his eyes lit up "oh you are interested in the Nightfall Blade?"

"That’s what i said".

"How much for it?" Elias asked.

He told me, I nearly choked.

"700 gold coins for a sword?"

"It’s enchanted sir with ink from the tears of a unicorn, pretty high grade"

Huh? What was he talking about

System?

There was scilence, it didn’t answer likw it normally did, my brows furrowed in worry, i needed it to run an appraisal for me on the sword to verify the sellers claims.

System?

Scilence, i internally began to panic had the system abandoned me in this world? I still needed it.

Elias cut through my thoughts by slightly touching my shoulder.

"Hey, you okay?"

I smiled, "yeah, why?"

"You sure? Because he has pretty much been yelling at you and you didn’t hear him."

"He has?"

"Not literally, are you getting the sword or not?"

I swallowed.

"It costs more than twenty nights im a standard inn i am not buying that."

The store owner frowned, i could literally touch the anger emitting from him.

I looked at Elias.

"Are all A-rank weapons this expensive?"

"Some are worse."

I immediately stepped away.

"No."

The merchant looked confused and furious, i could tell that if he had the resources we would have been dead.

"No?" He said in bottled up anger, but i didn’t care, i didn’t need the sword.

"I suddenly don’t need a sword."

Elias laughed.

"Come on let’s go before he explodes"

We left the shop, I looked at my A-rank plaque then at the city.

"Being A-rank is expensive."

"That’s why we high ranking adventurers get better commissions and missions."

By midday we’d explored enough of the central district that I had completely lost track of the investigation, which Elias eventually pointed out.

"We’re supposed to be investigating missing adventurers."

"We are."

"We’ve spent three hours walking around"

"You should be lucky you are taking a walk with me, i don’t usually do this for free" I said jestly

Elias shook his head but he was smiling, we eventually returned to the Guild, I stopped at the commission board, there were dozens of requests, most were ordinary monster subjugation jobs, a few were escort missions, one involved retrieving something from a dangerous forest, I reached for it, Elias caught my wrist.

"No."

"Why?"

"We have an investigation."

"We can investigate after this."

"No."

I looked at him.

"It’s an A-rank commission."

"So?"

"So we can take it."

"We are not taking it point blank period "

I sneered"you aren’t the boss of me i can do what i want "

Elias sighed, I smiled, he knew he was losing.

"What does it involve?"

I pointed to the posting.

"Forest Fangs."

He read it.

"A pack has been attacking merchant caravans outside the eastern road."

"Exactly."

We took the mission.

The Forest Fangs weren’t particularly difficult, there were six of them, fast, aggressive, dangerous enough to kill an inexperienced adventurer, but neither Elias nor I were inexperienced anymore, I stepped forward as the first beast charged, I moved, my fist connected with its jaw, the creature flew sideways, I stared at my hand still surprised at my strength, the beast hit a tree, Elias glanced at me.

"Still surprised?"

"A little."

"You’re getting stronger."

I smiled.

"Yeah."

The remaining creatures attacked, the fight lasted less than a minute, when it was over I stood among the bodies, Elias wiped blood from his blade.

"That was easy."

"Don’t say that."

"Why?"

"Because every time someone says something is easy, something horrible happens."

Elias laughed.

"You’re superstitious."

"I’m experienced."

We began examining the area, the commission had said the Forest Fangs had suddenly become aggressive, but something didn’t feel right, i immediately decided not to pursue it.

The system afterall wasn’t here to piece thw information together

System? I called but there was no answer. What was it doing to me?
