Genesis & Oblivion: The Celestial Evolution System
Chapter 98 — The Wooden SwordChapter 98: Chapter 98 — The Wooden Sword
The arena was completely silent.
Azrael stood at the entrance, one hand resting lightly against Astraeus.
Across from him, the mysterious young man waited in the center of the enormous arena.
He looked ordinary.
Too ordinary.
His black hair was tied behind his head, and he wore simple gray clothing without any insignia or armor. His only weapon was a wooden sword.
There was nothing impressive about it.
No runes.
No precious materials.
No powerful aura.
Just a simple wooden blade.
Yet Azrael’s instincts immediately warned him not to underestimate the man.
The young man looked at the group.
"You’ve reached the Eighteenth Floor."
Orin looked around.
"Where’s the monster?"
The young man smiled.
"You expected one?"
"Usually."
"Then you should learn to stop expecting things."
Orin sighed.
"I already don’t like this guy."
Lyanna laughed quietly.
Caelan ignored them and studied the young man.
"Are you a guardian?"
"Yes."
"Are you an instructor?"
The young man tilted his head.
"Perhaps."
Caelan frowned.
The guardian looked toward Azrael.
"But for him..."
He raised the wooden sword.
"...I’m a lesson."
Azrael’s expression became serious.
He had already experienced several lessons inside the Tower.
The Civilization Trial had taught them responsibility.
The Choice Trial had forced them to examine themselves.
The Perception Trial had taught them not to trust everything they saw.
Now the Tower had placed a warrior in front of them.
The System appeared.
[Floor Eighteen]
Trial Type: Combat Understanding
Objective:
Defeat the Guardian.
Special Rule:
The Guardian will only use the strength necessary to test you.
Additional Condition:
Do not rely on overwhelming power.
Failure Condition:
Defeat through brute force without understanding the trial.
Azrael read the notification carefully.
"Combat Understanding."
The guardian nodded.
"Correct."
Azrael looked at the wooden sword.
"Why a wooden weapon?"
"Because you’re too dependent on your own."
Azrael’s eyes narrowed.
The guardian continued.
"You have a powerful sword."
"You possess unusual abilities."
"You have several skills."
"You have a System."
"And yet..."
He raised the wooden sword.
"...none of those things will teach you how to fight."
Azrael remained silent.
The guardian pointed toward Astraeus.
"That sword can make your attacks stronger."
"Your System can help you evolve."
"Your bloodline can give you greater potential."
"But when everything else is removed..."
"What remains?"
Azrael slowly drew Astraeus.
The black blade emerged with a quiet metallic sound.
"I suppose we’re about to find out."
The guardian smiled.
"Good."
Azrael expected an attack.
None came.
The guardian simply stood there.
Seconds passed.
Then a minute.
Azrael waited.
The guardian didn’t move.
Seraphina watched quietly.
She understood what was happening.
The guardian wasn’t going to start the battle.
He was waiting for Azrael to decide what to do.
Azrael took one step forward.
The guardian remained still.
Another step.
Still nothing.
Azrael finally raised Astraeus.
The guardian smiled.
Then—
He disappeared.
BOOM!
A wooden sword slammed into Azrael’s shoulder.
Pain shot through his body.
Azrael staggered sideways.
He hadn’t even seen the attack.
Orin’s eyes widened.
"That was fast!"
Azrael steadied himself.
The guardian was already standing several meters away.
"Too slow."
Azrael’s expression became serious.
He activated Origin Perception.
The world sharpened.
Every detail became clear.
The texture of the arena floor.
The faint dust floating through the air.
The movement of Seraphina’s hair.
The guardian’s breathing.
Everything.
Except the guardian’s movements.
Azrael frowned.
The guardian disappeared again.
Azrael turned.
CLANG!
A wooden sword struck Astraeus.
The impact forced Azrael backward.
He slid across the floor.
The guardian didn’t pursue immediately.
Instead, he waited.
Azrael stared at him.
"You’re hiding your presence."
"No."
"Then what am I missing?"
The guardian smiled.
"You’re still trying to see me."
Azrael’s eyes narrowed.
"What should I do instead?"
"Find out."
The guardian attacked again.
The battle became increasingly frustrating.
Azrael could see the guardian.
But only after the attack had already begun.
Every time Azrael attempted to predict his movement, the guardian changed direction.
Every time Azrael tried to follow his aura, there was nothing to follow.
Every time Azrael tried to read his body, the guardian moved differently.
Minutes passed.
Azrael’s breathing became heavier.
The guardian didn’t appear tired.
Finally, Azrael swung Astraeus.
The guardian stepped aside.
Azrael followed with another strike.
Blocked.
Another.
Dodged.
Another.
The guardian tapped Astraeus with his wooden sword.
The force sent Azrael stumbling backward.
"You’re thinking too much."
Azrael frowned.
"That’s how I fight."
"I know."
"Then what’s wrong with it?"
"You’re calculating every movement."
The guardian raised his sword.
"Where will I move?"
"What will I attack?"
"How will I respond?"
"You’re trying to solve the battle before it happens."
He disappeared.
Azrael’s pupils contracted.
The wooden sword appeared beside his head.
He ducked.
The guardian’s sword passed above him.
Azrael immediately counterattacked.
The guardian blocked.
Azrael stepped forward.
The guardian retreated.
Azrael followed.
The guardian suddenly stopped.
Azrael almost collided with him.
The wooden sword moved toward his chest.
Azrael twisted.
The blade passed beside him.
For the first time...
Azrael felt something.
Not the guardian’s aura.
Not his mana.
Not his movement.
His own instinct.
Azrael stepped sideways.
The guardian’s next attack missed.
Azrael struck.
THUD!
His fist connected with the guardian’s shoulder.
The young man slid backward.
He looked at the spot where Azrael had hit him.
Then smiled.
"Better."
Azrael looked at his own hand.
He had not planned the attack.
He had simply moved.
The guardian attacked again.
This time Azrael closed his eyes.
Seraphina’s expression changed.
"Azrael!"
The guardian’s wooden sword came toward him.
Azrael moved.
The blade passed through empty air.
Another strike.
Azrael ducked.
Another.
He stepped aside.
The guardian’s expression became slightly more serious.
Azrael wasn’t predicting him.
He was responding.
Every movement came naturally.
He remembered the old master’s lessons.
Your senses tell you where I have already been.
True combat is fought one step ahead.
Azrael had misunderstood those words.
He thought being one step ahead meant predicting his opponent.
But that wasn’t what the old master meant.
Being one step ahead meant understanding himself well enough that his body could move before his conscious mind finished thinking.
The guardian attacked from behind.
Azrael turned.
Their weapons didn’t meet.
Because Azrael had already moved.
The guardian’s wooden sword passed beside him.
Azrael struck with his elbow.
The guardian blocked.
Azrael followed with his knee.
Blocked again.
A palm strike.
Blocked.
The guardian retreated.
Azrael followed.
Their movements became faster.
The wooden sword and Azrael’s fists collided repeatedly.
THUD!
CLANG!
BOOM!
The guardian suddenly increased his speed.
Azrael was hit in the ribs.
He flew backward.
He rolled across the arena and stopped on one knee.
Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.
Orin clenched his fists.
"He’s getting serious."
Caelan shook his head.
"No."
Orin looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"He’s still holding back."
The guardian looked toward Azrael.
"Your friends understand something you don’t."
Azrael stood.
"What?"
"They understand that this isn’t about winning."
Azrael wiped the blood from his mouth.
"Then what is it about?"
The guardian pointed the wooden sword toward him.
"Understanding how you fight when you cannot control everything."
Azrael became silent.
He looked at Astraeus.
The black sword had always been with him.
It had become more than a weapon.
It was part of his fighting style.
But perhaps that had become a weakness.
He had learned to depend on it.
Then he remembered the stone.
The countless days beneath the white tree.
The old master forcing him to fight with pebbles.
At the time, Azrael thought the lesson was about learning to fight without weapons.
Now he understood.
The weapon had never been the problem.
Dependence had been.
Azrael slowly sheathed Astraeus.
The guardian smiled.
"Better."
Azrael raised his empty hands.
"Again."
The guardian disappeared.
This time...
Azrael didn’t search for him.
He didn’t activate Origin Perception.
He didn’t use Resonance Sight.
He simply stood.
A wooden sword came toward his face.
Azrael moved.
Another strike.
He moved again.
The attacks became faster.
Azrael’s body responded naturally.
A strike toward his ribs.
He turned.
A strike toward his back.
He stepped forward.
A strike toward his legs.
He jumped.
The guardian’s sword swept beneath him.
Azrael landed.
Then immediately moved forward.
His fist struck the guardian’s chest.
The guardian blocked.
Azrael changed direction.
His elbow struck the guardian’s shoulder.
The guardian retreated.
Azrael followed.
The guardian swung.
Azrael stepped inside the attack.
His hand caught the guardian’s wrist.
For the first time...
The guardian couldn’t move.
Azrael looked into his eyes.
"I don’t need to predict you."
The guardian smiled.
Azrael twisted his wrist.
"I only need to respond."
The wooden sword fell from the guardian’s hand.
It struck the ground.
Clack.
Silence filled the arena.
The guardian looked at his empty hand.
Then laughed.
"You finally understood."
Azrael released him.
The guardian walked over and picked up the wooden sword.
"You were never too slow."
"You were too busy trying to control the battle."
He looked at Azrael.
"A battle cannot be controlled completely."
"Neither can evolution."
"Neither can life."
"The stronger you become, the more unpredictable the world will become."
Azrael nodded.
"I understand."
"Good."
The guardian raised his sword.
"But understanding isn’t enough."
He suddenly attacked again.
Azrael reacted instantly.
The wooden sword stopped one inch from his forehead.
Azrael’s fist stopped against the guardian’s chest.
Neither moved.
The guardian smiled.
"Now you understand."
The System appeared.

"Instinctive Combat."
The guardian nodded.
"Your instincts existed before your System."
Azrael looked at him.
"They did?"
"Of course."
"The System didn’t create who you are."
"It only helps you understand what already exists within you."
Those words made Azrael pause.
His System had always been a powerful advantage.
But perhaps it wasn’t his source of strength.
It was simply another tool.
The guardian looked toward Astraeus.
"Your sword is a tool."
"The System is a tool."
"Your bloodline is a tool."
"Even your abilities are tools."
He pointed toward Azrael’s chest.
"But your understanding..."
"That belongs to you."
Azrael nodded slowly.
The System appeared again.

The System disappeared.
Seraphina walked toward him.
"You learned something important."
Azrael nodded.
"I did."
"What?"
Azrael smiled.
"I’ve spent too much time trying to control everything."
Seraphina laughed softly.
"That’s definitely true."
Azrael looked at her.
"You noticed?"
"You’re my brother."
She smiled.
"I notice everything."
Azrael laughed.
Caelan walked toward the staircase.
"Are we finished here?"
The guardian stepped aside.
"You may continue."
Orin stretched his arms.
"Finally."
Lyanna looked at him.
"You didn’t even fight."
"Watching Azrael get hit was exhausting."
Azrael shook his head.
"You’re impossible."
"Thank you."
Everyone laughed.
They began walking toward the staircase.
Before Azrael left, he looked back at the guardian.
"Will we see you again?"
The young man smiled.
"If the Tower decides you still have something to learn."
Azrael nodded.
"I’ll remember that."
He turned and followed the others.
Above the staircase, the number 19 appeared.
The group began climbing together.
Azrael kept one hand resting against Astraeus.
But his grip was different now.
He wasn’t holding the sword because he needed it.
He was holding it because he chose to.
And that difference mattered.
