"That makes sense,” Rebecca nodded while looking at Sarah. “I guess Tia had to devise some way for other players to close the gap on you; otherwise your advantage would just snowball out of reach.”
“That is correct, Madam Death. Also, this is but one of a number of ways implemented,” Tia replied.
“Is there a limit to the number of times this can be done?” Roberta asked.
Tia nodded while saying, “While this feature can be used multiple times to gain extra stat points at the start of Genesis, it will not work indefinitely; there is a limit."
"Can you tell us the limit, Tia?" Sarah asked.
"No, like everything in Genesis, it is for you, the players, to figure out on your own. Now, if you will excuse me." Tia answered before disappearing.
"Well, that answers that,” Rebecca stated before looking at John with a smirk. “And now it looks like you have some work to do, John,"
"Oh no, you can't seriously be asking me to test how many times I can die from hard work while keeping the stat points after gaining a level, can you?" John asked, hoping he was wrong.
"I am indeed asking you to do that, as it would be a huge boon to our race,” Rebecca replied. Just think about it. If we could figure out the exact number of times you can do this, we could teach it to future young humans joining Genesis.”
John frowned before saying, “You're assuming that I’m interested in helping the human race gain this advantage.”
“Err,” Rebecca replied before the four women shared awkward looks. After the racial punishment announcement, it wasn’t hard for Rebecca and Jessica to figure out exactly who the citizen Tia mentioned was and what had happened to him.
“Well. We’d owe you a favour,” Rebecca added in an awkward tone.
“You mean on top of what the human race already owes me? Like this apartment for example?” John replied.
“He has a point,” Jessica stated.
“Whose side are you on, Jessica?” Rebbeca asked with a pout.
“The human race's obviously,” Jessica replied. “I’m just pointing out that we all ready who John far too much after everything he went through because of the government's failure.”
“Fair point,” Rebecca conceded.
As the women once again glanced at each other awkwardly, Adam looked at Sarah while asking, “Also, why can’t you try this since you're also back in the starter village?”
“Because I doubt it would actually work for me,” Saran replied.
“What do you mean?” John asked.
“Tia explained that this feature was unlocked as a way to partially balance out my stat advantage,” Sarah explained. “That would be moot if I could also take advantage of this.”
“That’s true,” John nodded.
John sighed and said, "Fine, since I already planned to train more at the weapons hall anyway, I may as well do it to the best of my abilities.”
The four women smiled and were about to thank him before he added, "However, only after I have completed the unarmed training. I can feel I am close to completing it."
"That's fine," Sarah said happily as she smiled at him gratefully before explaining. "Ideally, it would have been best if you could go into the forest to grind a level before returning to the training hall to die and keep the stats. Unfortunately, as you lack a weapon and have insufficient funds to purchase one, this is not an option."
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
Jessica nodded in agreement before adding, "Also you deciding to complete the defensive training is an excellent idea."
"What do you mean?" Rebecca asked.
"You may not know this, but when you complete weapon training in the weapons hall, it completes a hidden mission," Jessica explained.
"What? How do I not know of this?" Rebecca asked as the Saran and Roberta also looked surprised.
“Because you're a necromancer. What did you plan to smack the enemy with your staff?” Jessica scoffed before continuing. "Although it’s not really that surprising that none of you knows. Very few people complete weapon training in the weapons hall because it's so tedious and takes so long to do.
I only found out about it when I was randomly browsing the Genesis forums one day, where there are a few posts about it. Most people who’ve seen those posts claim they're going to complete it but then get sick of it partway through and give up after deciding they could be levelling up or doing something more interesting than repeating the same old poses for god knows how many hours.”
There was silence for a moment before Roberta said, "Maybe that's the whole point of it."
"Of what?" Sarah asked.
"Tia herself said that the stat trick is a hidden reward for those who work hard and that it can only be done a limited number of times," Roberta explained. "Perhaps the number of times it can be done is proportionate to the number of weapon types available in the weapons hall.
As we all know, completing a hidden quest rewards one hundred and fifty percent experience points. Now, assuming you have to die twice per weapon; that's swords, great-swords, daggers, maces, staffs, polearms, axes, bows, crossbows, throwing weapons and unarmed. That totals weapons, meaning eleven extra stat points in each stat before even getting past level one."
There was silence in the room as this news sank in before Jessica spoke in a quiet voice that still managed to get everyone's attention, "I forgot to mention that if you complete a weapons training in the training hall, you get basic mastery in that weapon, giving you a one percent ATP buff when having that weapon equipped."
"When you look at it from a player's point of view, one percent is nothing compared to other buffs; however, in high-level fights that one percent could make all the difference, not to mention all the extra stat points you could get from doing this," Sarah said in awe.
“You know this won't stay quiet once you start telling the young, right?” John asked. “Eventually, there will be someone who lets it slip and the other races learn of it."
The women all looked at each other before Sarah said, "That's something for us to worry about in the future; for now we need you to test this out for us, please, John. After that we can decide what to do with this news."
John nodded before suggesting, “What about your friend, Dawn Star? She’s still in the starter village and could benefit from this.”
Sarah stared at John in surprise before asking, “Why would you suggest that?”
“What?” John asked in confusion.
“Normally someone would want to keep such a secret to themselves as much as possible, so why would you suggest I tell my friend about this?” Sarah asked.
“What secret?” John chuckled. “We’re all aware of it.”
“Maybe so, but there was always the possibility that I would forget to mention this to Dawn Star until after she completed the starter village,” Sarah replied. “And yet you went out of your way to suggest it to me.”
“You're thinking too much into this, Sarah,” John replied. “I only mentioned it because she’s your friend and she seems like a nice person, that’s all.”
As he finished speaking, John stood up and stretched before saying, I need to get some food before I go back into Genesis and test out this little trick. Oh right, what about shopping and the MK Zero?”
“The MK Zero can wait till tomorrow since it’s already so late,” Rebecca replied.
Sarah nodded before teasingly saying, “Same with shopping; it took so long to get you to log out after all.”
“Sure,” John replied before heading for the kitchen while asking, “I’m assuming you're all staying for dinner?”
“You can cook?” Rebecca asked in surprise.
“I dabble,” John replied. “I did live alone for eleven years after all.”
As the other three women followed John towards the kitchen, Sarah stated where she was, keeping her eyes on John’s back as her lips formed into an appreciative smile before she whispered, “You're far too kind for what our race did to you.” After which she then used her access band to send a message.
[Blue Ice Queen: Mel, you free?]
[Dawn Star: What’s up?]
[Blue Ice Queen: John just discovered a trick in the starter village that can get you extra stats and he wanted me to inform you.]
[Dawn Star: Seriously? There's such a thing? Why did he want you to inform me? Does he know who I am?]
[Blue Ice Queen: No, he did it because you're my friend and he thinks you're a nice person.]
[Dawn Star: … Your friend's weird. What’s the trick?]
[Blue Ice Queen: I can’t deny that. It’s like this…
