John opened his eyes and stretched his aching body to get some feeling back into it before he headed down to the kitchen to make himself some food.
As he did, he turned on the holographic projector and selected the Genesis News channel.
Unsurprisingly, the main topic being featured was about the world announcement he had heard before logging out.
Everyone was wondering who this Dream Star player was because no matter who Genesis News interviewed, no one was able to inform them. This was only natural since she was technically still in the starter village, and everyone knew that you didn’t get a class until level ten. Along with that, they were also trying to figure out which of the five previously unique classes Dream Star had become.
John continued to listen to one outlandish theory after another while he ate his food before he decided to go for a run. {Since I’m no longer doing physical labour every day, I should probably look at working out more to keep in shape.}
Thankfully, some of the clothes he had purchased from Dani Fashion had already arrived over the past week, including some exercise clothes. So after getting changed, John stepped into the express elevator and pressed the button for the lobby.
He had not visited the lobby before today since every time he had left the apartment so far had been with Sarah in her car. So, as the elevator doors opened, John stepped out onto a large circular floor. In front of him, in the very centre of the lobby, was a two-floored circular bar area with ramps that curved around the bar connecting the two floors.
Several trees and patches of grass were spaced around the floor, while a large lounge area with another bar ran along one wall and a long reception desk ran along another opposite the large entrance doors. The final wall was taken up by several elevators.
John looked around the long bar area he had stepped out into with interest for a few minutes since it seemed the express elevator for the top ten floors was separate from the other elevators. As he did so, a winge came from beside him. “Would you mind not standing right next to our table when we’re trying to have a private conversation?”
John turned and found that the one who had spoken was an attractive young man who appeared to be in his early to mid twenties and was wearing an expensive-looking custom-made suit. However, what truly caught his attention was the Kitsune who sat opposite the young man on a long chair. She had white ears with black tips, red eyes and wore a beautiful red, black and white dress that showed off her legs and amplified her cleavage.
Although John found her to be very attractive, that wasn’t what caught his attention; it was, in fact, the white-furred nine tails that lay on either side of the kitsune, for John had read in the past that only members of royalty and high nobility were ever born with nine tails.
He tried to think if he recognised the kitsune but drew a blank and so simply nodded to the pair before turning to leave. Unfortunately, the man didn’t seem to appreciate how he had been looking at the female kitsune and said, “Don’t you think it’s rather inappropriate to stare at a lady in such a way?”
{Oh great, we have a white knight.} John thought with a sigh before turning to the man and saying, “You're quite right.” After which, he turned to the kitsune and addressed her in her native language, “My sincere apologies; I meant no disrespect, honoured ninth tail. I was simply surprised to encounter one of your stature here.”
The white-haired female kitsune raised an eyebrow in surprise before asking, “You speak my native tongue?”
“A little; I was lucky enough to be able to study it back in school.”
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
“I was unaware that our language was study material in human schools.”
“It’s not; I merely studied it in my free time.”
“Why?” The woman asked while her male companion looked between them in confusion, clearly not able to understand their conversation.
John shrugged before saying, “The Kitsune Empire is a neighbouring empire; I figured it might come in useful someday.”
“And has it?” The woman asked with interest.
“Not until today,” John replied before apologetically saying. “But please forgive me, for I am interrupting you both.”
The woman chuckled before saying, “Please, feel free to interrupt as much as you wish. I am, after all, far more interested in speaking with a handsome man who would take the effort to learn my language over one who wouldn’t.”
John smiled in response and said, “While I appreciate the compliment, I’m afraid I’m not really dressed to accompany such an important figure as yourself.”
The woman raised her eyebrow again before asking, “And what makes you so sure that I’m an important figure? Have we perhaps met before?”
John shook his head before saying, “No, I’m sure I would remember an honoured ninth if I had ever met them.”
The woman's interest was clearly piqued now, and she obviously wasn’t in any rush to end their conversation as she asked, “That’s twice now that you have addressed me so formally; very few outside my race know the meaning of such an address. Do you?”
John opened his mouth to reply again, but before he could, the young man coughed before saying, “Pardon the intrusion, but our car has arrived.”
“Has it?” The woman replied with far less interest than that of the conversation she had just been part of. However, she made no further obvious signs of her displeasure at being interrupted and instead stood before looking at John with a polite smile while saying, “If fate wishes it, may we meet again.”
“If it is fate's will to honour the ninth one's wish, then perhaps we shall,” John replied while once again offering a small bow, making the woman's eyes light up before departing.
The man obviously wasn’t in any rush to follow the woman since his eyes stayed glued to her attractive rear, where her nine tails emerged from her dress and hypnotically swayed from side to side. It was only after realising that he was staring that the man turned to glare at John before departing.
John watched the pair leave and saw that the woman stopped for a brief moment next to another kitsune who wore a business suit and had eight tails, before continuing. John shook his head at the man's obvious jealousy before heading for the entrance himself to begin his run, when suddenly the eight-tailed kitsune approached him and said. “My apologies, but my lady would like to ask your name, sir.”
John stared at the new kitsune for a moment before shaking his head and saying, “Such a thing would go against fate's will and therefore ruin any chance of us ever meeting again, for it is foolish to try and trick fate. I therefore must regretfully refuse and ask you to remind your lady that we will meet again only if fate wills it.”
The woman's eyes widened in surprise before she offered a small smile while saying, “Very true.” After which she followed her mistress out of the apartment lobby.
***
Asyath Serin, the capital city of the elves, looked as if the city and the forest were one and the same, as buildings were built into the trees themselves in such a way that it almost appeared natural. Each tree had multiple levels of these buildings rising high into the canopy. Small rivers ran through the city while wooden rope bridges crisscrossed and connected the trees to one another.
At the very heart of the city, a tree so thick that it was impossible to guess how long it would take to walk around its base stretched high up into the air and out of sight. High up was the Royal Palace of Asyath Serin, a circular ring that encompassed the entire trunk and grew out of the tree itself, which was home to the elven royal family.
Within one of the rooms of the ring palace, Queen Tanelia Kaegwyn sat in her office discussing matters of state with her personal maid and assistant, Saida, when her access band notified her of an incoming call.
After looking to see who it was from, Tanelia smiled before answering the call, causing a holographic image of Empress Alexia Bristle to appear above her desk as she asked, "Alexia, how are you?"
"Tired, Tanelia,” Alexia sighed before asking. “When can I pass this position onto my daughter?"
Tanelia laughed before asking, "Do you really want to abdicate the throne and pass it over to Adria before she’s even married?"
“Better her than that useless son of mine,” Alexia replied before adding. “Though thankfully he can never inherit the throne.”
Tabelia smiled before asking, "So, Alexia, to what do I owe this call?"
Alexia sighed before saying, "I wish to ask for the elves' aid in recapturing Stone-mist Castle in the coming siege war."
There was silence for a moment before Tanielia asked, "And what do we get out of helping the human race in this?"
