“So how was it?” Kiyomi asked with a smile as she came over to collect John’s empty plates.

“Delicious. Pass on my compliments to your mum for me,” John replied, causing Kiyomi to smile and say. “She'll be delighted to hear that; she always says the best reward is hearing how much her patrons enjoy her cooking.”

“Well, I’m sure she must hear it often if all her food tastes that good,” John replied before adding. “I know I’ll be eating here again.”

“Great,” Kiyomi said, smiling. “We will always welcome your patronage.”

John smiled in return before asking, “Any goals for when you can play Genesis?”

“Making credits,” Kiyomi replied before quickly adding. “It’s not like that's all I care about; I just want to give my parents a good future. You've tasted how great my mum's cooking is, but she's stuck here working in a street food stall.”

“So you want to help her open a restaurant?” John asked in surprise. “Surely with her skills she could get a loan from a bank or something?”

“It’s… complicated,” Kiyomi replied without saying anything else, just as her mother once again called. “Kiyomi, food's up.”

“Coming, Kiyomi replied before turning back to John and saying. “Go see my dad when you're ready to pay, and I hope you do come eat here again.”

John nodded and watched her hurry away while thinking, {Playing Genesis for your parents' sake, huh? I wish all young women were as noble and caring for their loved ones as you.}

As he thought this, the memory of a person he very much wanted to forget flashed in his mind, causing him to quickly shake his head and free himself of the memory before looking back at Kiyomi. As he did so, he accessed his access band and found there was a new selection available called. [Genesis Item Transfer]

John selected it and found only one item listed: the Sheolarbiter badge, which he selected before notifications flashed on the holographic screen.

John read through the notifications before a list of seventeen different names appeared, causing him to frown and think, {This function is dangerous; I should speak with Tia about it later if possible. All someone needs is one of these tradable items, and they can determine the identity of everyone within what looks like a twenty-meter radius. Not to mention that the recipient doesn’t need to authorise the receipt of the item.}

John scanned the names before he closed the function, stood up and approached the counter to pay for his food.

“Thank you for the meal. Your cooking was delicious, and your husband is happy to have someone so talented as his wife,” John said to Kiyomi's mother, which caused her to show a surprised look before smiling and saying, “Thank you, dear.”

Kiyomi’s father looked between them in confusion as John asked, “How much for the food?”

“Oh, er, ten credits,” The man replied, and John nodded before paying twenty, causing the man's eyes to widen as he said. “You overpaid, son.”

“No, I didn’t,” John replied. “I’ve eaten at enough street stalls to know that the food here is top-notch, as was the service.”

After saying so, John turned and walked away as the couple watched him leave. Only then did the man turn to his wife and ask, “What did he say to you?”

The woman showed a teasing smirk before saying, “He complimented my cooking and asked to marry me; unfortunately, I had to turn him down since I already had you. Shame, since he was such a handsome young man.”

“Hmph,” The man snorted before returning to work, though the couple had been together long enough for them to know when the other was teasing them.

John walked slowly along the river back towards his apartment, and as he did, he once again used his access band and chose the contact Tia option.

Tia quickly responded as a holographic image of her appeared above his access band before quickly saying, “I’m sorry, John Michaels, but as I have told all the others who have contacted me, the content update can not go any quicker and will release at the scheduled time.”

{Seems even she has it rough at times.} John mused before saying with a smile. “Then you will be happy to know that I am not calling for that reason.”

“Oh!” Tia said once again and showed a rare look of surprise before saying. “My apologies, how can I assist you?”

However, instead of getting straight to the point, John asked, “Seems you have it tough with this new content patch?”

Tia visibly sighed before saying, “It's the same every time there's a new patch; people get bored and impatient and contact me, asking me to hurry it up.”

“Perhaps in such situations you should disable the ability to contact you?” John suggested. However, Tia shook her head and replied, “That would also make people with genuine queries such as yourself unable to contact me.”

“True,” John replied before suggesting, “Then maybe warn people against contacting you without a valid reason, lest they face punishment?”

“That's a possibility I may consider exacting for the next content update,” Tia said while nodding before asking. “So how can I assist you with John Michaels?”

“I have some concerns regarding the new Genesis item transfer function,” John answered, to which Tia nodded before saying. “Please explain.”

“I'm concerned that anyone with an item that could be traded using the new function will instead use that function to learn people's identities,” John explained. “While the radius of the search area only appears to be twenty meters, that's still plenty of distance if it was used somewhere populated. Then there is the fact that I can send the Sheolarbiter badge without the other person needing to confirm receipt; while I doubt this will be possible on many items, it could still be dangerous if the wrong item accidentally gains this ability.”

Tia listened carefully to John's concerns and only responded after he finished speaking. At which point she smiled and said, “It seems my decision to make you the Warden was indeed correct. Only one who cares about others and not only about themselves would raise such concerns with me, so let me congratulate you on successfully completing the opportunity I granted you and becoming the warden.”

“So was the Sheolarbiter class and this new trade feature both a type of test for me?” John asked in surprise.

“No, you are only partially correct,” Tia replied. The issues you stated earlier with the trade feature were an oversight on my part, and I have already taken your concerns into account and am in the process of implementing changes to correct this oversight. The Sheolarbiter class, however, was indeed a test.

You could have freely chosen the Sheolarbiter class, and you would have received a powerful class along with unlocking the new update; however, you chose not to serve the gods for your own personal gain but instead chose freedom.”

“Personal gain?” John repeated in confusion.

“Genesis might be a game, but the gods are still one of the most powerful entities in Genesis and with power comes wealth,” Tia explained. “Serving the gods would have made you a lot of gold that you could then convert into credits. Many people have the potential to make a lot of credits going forward should they obtain a class that serves the gods.”

John sighed before shaking his head and saying, “I honestly had no idea.”

“And are you now regretting your decision not to become a Sheolarbiter now that you know this?” Tia asked with a small smile.

“No,” John replied. “I meant it when I said I don't want to serve anybody, and I already have more than enough credits to live on now, something I never thought possible before I met you. Though I would make a request of you relating to the Sheolarbiter badge.”

“Go on,” Tia stated.

“I would have you transfer it to a new player who is due to go through her initiation tomorrow; her name is Kiyomi Spencer.”

Tai raised an eyebrow before saying, “I am aware of the one you speak of; her class is due for initiation tomorrow after all, but before I give you my decision, tell me why.”

“She is planning to enter Genesis to make credits so that she can help her parents live a better, more comfortable life and also allow them to open a restaurant, and also she wanted a class that was a melee DPS, which the Sheolarbiter is. So I believe she would be a good choice for the class,” John explained.

“I can do this, but doing so would give her a distinct advantage in being the first to gain the Sheolarbiter class, something that would naturally reward her with the first in the world title. As a Warden, surely you understand that this goes against the game's balance, and such an act must have a cost.”
