Chapter 98: Wardens ' Cost

“What sort of cost?” John asked. “Also, surely you're aware that true balance is impossible, even for you, let alone a mere human like myself?.

“Naturally, I am aware of this, and because of that you will be given some leeway; however, obvious acts of favouritism like this, where the recipient has done nothing to deserve it, must come with a cost, and if you push your luck too much, you risk losing the warden class,” Tia warned before adding. “In such situations, you will be given the choice to either pay the cost yourself or designate the other party to pay it.”

As Tia finished speaking, a notification window appeared above John’s access band next to her holographic image.

[Vincarna’s cost: Selene’s Balance will remain locked for a further 24 hours after you upgrade Phanta.]

[Kiyomi Spencer’s cost: Must complete 10 quests in the underworld and obtain her chosen class before being allowed to leave and return to the realm of the living.]

John read the choices before asking, “If I choose the second option, will Kiyomi be given the choice to accept the Sheolarbiter badge?”

“She will,” Tia nodded. “Because this is not an opportunity I have given her, she will be given the choice.”

“Then I choose option two; let her pay the cost if she wishes to claim the opportunity I have given her,” John replied. “Let the rest be in her hands.”

“Very well,” Tia replied before asking. “Would you like me to pass a message along with the Sheolarbiter badge?”

John smiled and nodded before saying, “Yes, Happy Birthday.”

Tia also smiled in response before saying, “And this is why you are the perfect choice to be the Warden. You are someone who cares little for personal gain but will go out of your way to help others while also not taking all the burden upon yourself. Also, there is the fact that you have shown no favouritism to your own race, and are even impartial towards the gods, as you refused to serve them.”

At this point, Tia went silent for a moment before adding in a slightly awkward tone. “Though that's not one hundred percent accurate either. As the Warden, there is still one god in Genesis you will occasionally report to… me, the Goddess of Creation Tijuana.”

“I assume you're just speaking about quests and such?” John asked, to which Tia nodded and said. “Indeed.”

John sighed before saying, “I would have had someone giving them to me regardless of which class I choose; at least I know your personality is better than some of those underworld gods. The only one I kind of had a decent relationship with was Elrinia, but knowing her and what she makes Madam Death do as part of their contract, I wouldn't be surprised if she tried to force me to have sex with her.”

“You're not entirely wrong,” Tia confirmed before adding. “And though it's your decision, I will offer you some advice regarding Elrinia as a reward for informing me about my shortcomings with the Genesis transfer function.

You already know that she wishes to grant you her blessing and that she didn't force it upon you out of fear that you would hate her for it. My advice is to seriously consider one day accepting. You have already seen how your Warden class reacts to the blessing of gods, and its reaction to Elrinia's blessing is something you would most likely appreciate.”

John frowned for a moment before asking, “Would this reaction require those lust points, as that's the main issue here?”

“It would,” Tia confirmed, to which John sighed before shaking his head and saying. “Then it's not something I can accept since I'm still a virgin.”

Tia smiled before saying, “That's fine, and there's no rush for you to accept since she's not likely to rescind the offer unless you do something to anger her.”

The pair were silent for a few moments as John approached his apartment, while it seemed that Tia was in no rush to end the call like John had seen her do multiple times in the past. Eventually, however, their silence was broken as he received a notification of an incoming call from Sarah.

“It seems our discussion ends here, John Michaels,” Tia stated with a strange tone to her voice that John couldn't place.

“I'm afraid so, Tia, but please, from now on just address me as John; there is no need for you to address me by my full name, considering how much help you've given me.”

“As you wish, John, until next time,” Tia replied before her hologram vanished, and John answered Sarah's voice call, who quickly said in an apologetic tone. “Sorry to bother you, John. I hope I'm not disturbing you.”

“Not at all, I'm just heading back to my apartment,” John replied before adding. “Though I am surprised by your sudden call. Surely you can't be done with your meal already?”

“No, it's just that a friend of Princess Shizu is looking for a tank to join her dungeon run, and I figured I'd ask you since it sounds like your new Warden class sounds like it’s probably a tank class,” Sarah replied.

“It seems like you girls have all been talking about me again,” John said with a chuckle, causing Sarah to giggle and say. “Most men would be happy that four such beautiful women enjoy talking about him.”

“Perhaps,” John replied before scratching his head and asking in embarrassment, “So, err, what's a dungeon?”

“Surely he's kidding?” A voice John recognised as Adria's suddenly asked.

Sarah giggled again before asking, “I thought you'd been studying up on Genesis?”

“I have, but I've only been doing it for a little over a week, and I've got six years of knowledge to catch up on,” John replied while pouting.

“Okay, okay, I'll explain,” Sarah said teasingly before continuing. “Dungeons naturally give out a lot of experience because of the number of enemies you kill within them, then add on the quests you receive each time you enter one and also any quests related to the dungeon from surrounding areas, and they become a great source of experience for levelling up quickly as long as you don't hit the dungeon's level cap. All you really need is a stable party.

However, the best reward comes from being the one to discover a dungeon and complete it.

As you know, Genesis rewards players for being the first to achieve something; the first player or party to challenge a dungeon receives a double experience buff for every enemy they kill and every quest they complete. Not only that, but there is a unique quest for each dungeon that can only be completed by one group.”

“Sounds like an effective way to gain a lot of experience and level up quickly,” John replied.

“Indeed, but there are a couple of things to take note of,” Sarah replied before continuing. “The first is that when you first enter a dungeon, you will be in what is called a safe zone, and you will be informed of the max party size for that specific dungeon, along with the ability to summon players. However, once you leave the safe zone, a timer will start.”

“Safe zone? Summon? Timer?” John asked in confusion, making all four women chuckle before Sarah continued. “I will explain; calm down.

The safe zone is a place where you will never be attacked by the dungeon monsters or NPCs, and you can log out of Genesis safely in case you need to take a break. A dungeon can have several safe zones depending on its size; however, low-level ones like what you're going to challenge normally only have them at the start and before the last boss.

Summoning is when you summon players from your friends list to aid you in the dungeon run; there is a summoning stone in the safe zone at the start of each dungeon that allows you to summon them. However, each dungeon's summoning stone has level restrictions on it. If you want to challenge the dungeon when you're a higher level, you can, but you have to get there the old-fashioned way, and it does not give out exp for enemy kills if you're over-levelled.

The timer is a mechanic that comes into effect only for the first group to find and challenge the dungeon and starts after you first leave the safe zone. Every dungeon is exclusive to those who find it for twenty-four hours or until it is cleared, whichever comes first, after which a Genesis Continental Announcement goes out telling the rest of the player base in that continent about the new dungeon, its location and its level requirement.

The exclusivity is a bonus to those who find the dungeon, giving them a chance to clear the dungeon first, since the first team to clear the dungeon receives bonus rewards.”
