Chapter 335: Chapter 15: Experiment

Cuiwei Corps.

Experiment Center No. 3.

Liu Peng, leading the Third Squad of the Emergency Affairs Department, landed a multi-functional armed hovercar in the experiment center’s parking lot.

"Liu Peng, I heard you were attacked on your way here. Did you bring back something good?"

The moment he stepped out of the hovercar, a man in a white lab coat approached him.

"It’s nothing, just some petty thugs. Not worth mentioning." Liu Peng was in high spirits. He grinned and said, "Trenton, you sure get news fast. I just submitted the experiment request report a little while ago, and you’re already here!"

Trenton Towns paid it no mind. After hugging Liu Peng, he craned his neck to peer inside the hovercar.

"Come on, tell me, what did you bring back this time? I just heard the center was mobilizing personnel. Looks like they’re gearing up for a major experiment."

"Don’t talk nonsense. I brought back members of the Hass Clan. They’re badly injured and need medical attention. I brought them back to get them treated!"

Liu Peng cut Trenton off.

"Treatment? Why come to our center for treatment? Oh—you people are so devious. It’s obviously..."

"Shhh~"

"Alright, ’treatment’ it is. Let me think... the Hass Clan... Is that the family who submitted the data on the symbiotes, the one that caused such a stir among the Empire’s top brass?"

"So that’s how it is. In that case, we’d better give them a thorough ’treatment.’ If we don’t take a few slices, no one will feel safe using them, right?"

Trenton Towns clapped his hands, calling to the staff behind him. "Everyone, hurry over here! Move the test subjects from the vehicle to Lab 5—no, I mean, move the wounded to Treatment Room 5."

...

Inside the observation room of Lab 5, Experiment Center No. 3.

A group of researchers in white lab coats stared intently at the various data scans of the Hass Clan members’ bodies.

"So this is the symbiote? What an incredible biological structure. It perfectly mimics all of human body tissue. If we didn’t already know they were hosting symbiotes, we’d never be able to tell the difference just from these scans."

"I heard that after the 40410086th session of the tournament concluded, quite a few lords submitted reports that conflicted with the symbiote data. But since they had no physical evidence, all their submissions were rejected."

"I heard that too. A lot of the lords who advanced submitted information about an ’Eye Demon,’ claiming it can parasitize flesh-and-blood creatures and control its host."

"Apparently, photos of the ’Eye Demon’ are identical to those of the ’symbiote,’ and their ability descriptions mostly overlap. The only difference is one is described as ’parasitism’ and the other as ’symbiosis.’"

"I heard the higher-ups were originally going to forcibly confiscate the ’symbiotes’ from the Hass Clan, but the sheer volume of conflicting reports from the lords who advanced made them hesitant."

"If the higher-ups weren’t concerned, we wouldn’t have gotten this job, right? No job, no funding. No funding, and I can’t do the experiments I want. So isn’t this a good thing?"

"That’s true. Let’s get this over with so I can get back to my own research. They pulled me out right in the middle of an experiment, making me waste my materials."

"Making all of us come over for such a simple experiment is a real pain. Didn’t the director even try to argue?"

...

Seeing the researchers’ lax attitude, Trenton frowned. ’This won’t do,’ he thought. ’This experiment is extremely important.’

"Everyone, quiet down," he said, clapping his hands.

"I need everyone to give this experiment 120 percent. Don’t get complacent."

"We’re all colleagues here, so I’ll tell you the truth."

"Cuiwei Star is currently under lockdown. The entire planet is sealed; you can get in, but you can’t get out. The Fifth Fleet is already stationed just outside Cuiwei Star."

"Right now, Cuiwei Star has become one big testing ground for the symbiotes. If the situation gets out of control, the Fifth Fleet will open fire with its planet-killer cannons."

"So, everyone, let’s get to work. The fate of Cuiwei Star is in our hands. If we can figure out all the characteristics of this creature, we can decide whether it lives or dies. But producing those results will decide whether *we* live or die."

After his speech, the researchers’ contemptuous attitudes vanished. Their hands flew into motion as they began directing their subordinates in preparation for the experiments. The topic of their conversation, however, was still a bit off-kilter.

"Tsk. No wonder the old geezer in charge of the experiment center is nowhere to be found. He must have fled Cuiwei Star already, right?"

"The Governor and the Legion Commander actually agreed to turn Cuiwei Star into a test site?"

"The price must have been right!"

"Now I remember! A few days ago, the planetary garrison left for a training exercise at the off-world Interstellar Fortress. Now, only some police are left on Cuiwei Star."

"I think some of the Corps’ elite squads went with them, too."

...

As they exchanged these tidbits of information, they were shocked to realize that all of Cuiwei Star’s important figures and assets had conveniently been moved off-planet in the last few days.

The shock made them work even faster.

Once the preparations were complete, Trenton and the other researchers began to plan the upcoming experiments.

Since so many lords claimed this symbiote, or Eye Demon, had parasitic abilities and could control its host, they had to find a way to provoke it and see if it could be pushed to that point.

The symbiote/Eye Demon was an intelligent alien lifeform. Forcing it to reveal its true nature when it didn’t want to would be a delicate business.

The researchers were all brilliant. In just over ten minutes, they had devised dozens, even hundreds, of experimental methods. However, with fewer than ten test subjects available, running through all the experiments would take a significant amount of time.
