Global PvP Tower: I Can Infinitely Merge My Units
Chapter 40: Dangerous QuestFive hours passed before the black patch on the horizon resolved into something Logan could actually put a shape to.
A mountain. Not a hill, not a peak among peaks, a single mountain standing alone against the sky, black from base to summit like something had scorched the stone down to a color that didn’t belong in nature.
The moment his foot crossed onto the lower slope, the world around him changed.
```
[ You have entered a World Quest area. ]
[ Curse of the Dragwir dwells in four mountains of this world. Purify the curse from all four places by destroying their sources, found at the peak of each mountain, and take the relics from there. Once all four relics are combined, the world quest will be completed. ]
[ Reward: +1 Card Summon Slot & 0.5 Increment in Tier Point Multiplier. ]
```
Logan stood there rereading it twice, and the second read hit harder than the first.
’A fourth card slot. That means I get to keep four summons instead of three when I win this match.’ His pulse picked up. ’And half a point added to my Tier Point Multiplier? That’s insane.’
He knew exactly how valuable both of those things actually were, which meant he also knew exactly how hard this was about to be.
He was doing it anyway.
The path up wasn’t much of a path, loose black rock underfoot that shifted with every step, and they’d barely covered a hundred meters before the mountain answered their arrival properly.
Shapes peeled themselves off the rock face all at once, black and wrong, pieced together out of animal parts that didn’t belong on the same creature. A wolf’s head on something with too many legs. Wings that looked stolen off a bird twice its size.
```
[ Voidwrought Chimera x30 ]
```
Logan’s eyes went wide. Forty. Same base number as a Tier-1 Mythic, on something this size, this early into a single mountain.
’This place isn’t playing around.’
"Same as always. Spread out, don’t get surrounded." Logan didn’t waste time being impressed. "Go."
Billy tore into the closest cluster first, Severed Spokes sending blades wheeling out in three directions at once, cutting through whatever got caught between them.
Zephyr claimed the air above the whole group, Skydomain turning the wind hostile to anything that tried to flank from overhead.
Tide’s pressure spread wide across the loose rock, Crushing Depths slowing half the horde to a crawl before they’d covered half the distance.
Maw and Stitchgrin worked the edges, thinning out whatever the others hadn’t already caught, and inside a few minutes the black shapes stopped moving entirely.
They’d barely started climbing again when Stitchgrin’s voice came through, quieter than usual.
"Master, that Player Tronking returned with a location."
"We can’t turn back right now." Logan didn’t slow down. "Tell him to find another one. We’ll be there in six or seven hours, I suppose."
"Got it, hehehe." Stitchgrin’s grin widened, and his voice shifted, pitched toward something small and far away. "Hey. Go find another spot. We’ll be back later. After six or seven hours."
The climb settled into a rhythm after that, steady and slow, the mountain testing them with smaller packs of chimera every so often but nothing that came close to matching that first horde.
Logan kept Restore working through all of it, small doses here and there, keeping everyone topped off before any one fight had the chance to wear someone down for real.
The peak opened up ahead of them a few hours later, a wide flat clearing of the same black stone, and something was already waiting in the middle of it.
It looked small at first glance, no bigger than a lion crouched low against the dark rock. Then Logan counted the tails, seven of them, each one tipped with something that caught the light wrong, and the three heads mounted along a single spine, jaws open just slightly on all three like it was already tasting the air.
```
[ Vrashkull, Herald of the Dragwir ]
Rank: Special
-- stats --
HP: 50,000/50,000
MP: 50,000/50,000
Attack: 200
Speed: 150
Constitution: 500
Arcane: 500
```
Logan felt something cold settle in his gut looking at those numbers next to something that small. Akuvin had been a giant of raw mass, easy to see coming from any direction. This thing could fit through a doorway.
’Small and that fast is worse than big and slow. A lot worse.’
"Everyone, spread wide. Don’t let it pin you against the rock." Logan stepped back himself, hand resting on the hilt of Marcus’s old sword without actually drawing it. "I’ll hold position back here."
He wasn’t qualified for this fight, and he knew it. Even if he had a legendary-rank sword and knew how to fight, he’d barely stand a chance against someone that far outclassed him in terms of stats, so he didn’t want to get in the way of his summons who actually could hunt this boss.
Vrashkull moved before anyone finished spreading out, all three heads snapping toward Maw first, jaws closing on empty air where he’d been standing a half second earlier. He didn’t get a counterattack in before it was already somewhere else, tails lashing out in a wide arc that forced Zephyr to break off her approach entirely.
Zephyr’s Gravity Snare caught nothing but empty air, Vrashkull already three body-lengths clear before the field even finished forming.
It came back around fast, one head lunging for Tide this time, and Billy was already moving to intercept.
Severed Spokes!
Detached blades spun into the gap between Tide and the incoming bite, catching the strike on their edges and deflecting it wide.
"Nice save." Tide didn’t slow down, Crushing Depths already building beneath Vrashkull’s feet.
Vrashkull broke free of the pressure before it fully closed, faster than anything with that much weight in stats had any right to be, and the fight scattered across the whole clearing in a mess of black fur and darting tails.
Stitchgrin’s threads lashed out whenever it came close enough, thinning its stats a fraction every time they landed, but it never stayed still long enough for the debuff to really pile up.
The toys he summoned were shredded almost instantly as soon as they got close.
Then it mid-lunge at Maw, all three heads turned at once toward the one person on that clearing who hadn’t thrown a single attack the whole fight.
Vrashkull went for Logan.
He barely had time to register the shift in direction before it was already closing the distance, all seven tails whipping forward in a spread meant to make dodging any one of them pointless.
’What?!’
Logan could see it, but couldn’t react! He was moving, but his body felt utterly slow compared the death coming at him. ’No!’
Billy got there first by less than a second, throwing every blade he had into the gap between Logan and the incoming tails.
Severed Spokes!
Blades met tails in a shower of sparks and black ichor, deflecting most of the strike wide, but the force of it still threw Logan clean off his feet, and skidding across the rock, his heart beating wildly as he felt death almost grasping him a moment ago.
But that half second of everyone’s attention snapping toward Logan was the opening Vrashkull used with no wastage in movement.
It spun away from Billy’s blades and drove three of its remaining tails straight through Tide’s chest before anyone else even finished turning around.
Tide screamed, a sound none of them had ever heard him make before, and went rigid where the tails had run him through.
But he didn’t fall. Both hands came up and closed around the tails still buried in his own chest, holding them there, holding himself in place around them so Vrashkull couldn’t pull free.
Crushing Depths!
Weight poured out of him in a final surge, more than he’d ever put into a single cast before, dragging Vrashkull’s whole body down against his own dying grip.
"KILL IT! NOW IS THE CHANCE! I’M ALREADY DEAD!"
Nobody argued with him. Billy’s blades came in first, followed by Zephyr’s wind and Maw’s jaws and Stitchgrin’s full length of thread all at once, everything they had aimed at a target that couldn’t move anymore even if it wanted to.
Everyone used their strongest’s skills.
Vrashkull came apart under all of it at once, three heads going still one after another until there was nothing left holding its shape together.
```
[ Vrashkull, Herald of the Dragwir - defeated ]
[ Tide (Abyssal Tide Sovereign) has been eliminated. +20,000 Tower Points]
```
Tide’s body went still the same moment Vrashkull did, both of them crumbling away into nothing on the same patch of black rock.
Logan stood there staring at the empty space where he’d been, chest tight enough that it took him a second to actually get words out.
"Damn it." His voice cracked on the second word. "I didn’t want to get another one killed."
They weren’t just tools to him. He’d talked to Tide, laughed with him, watched him name himself. They were his friends, every single one of them, and he’d just watched one of them die trying to save his life.
Billy limped over, one arm hanging a little wrong from the fight, and bumped Logan’s shoulder with his own.
"What are you worrying about, boss?" He grinned, easy despite everything. "We live, and we die. That’s normal."
"I’m sure that bastard went back to wherever he came from. Probably ends up back in your circle eventually, and you summon him right back out again." Billy shrugged. "That’s just how it works, probably."
Logan didn’t have anything to say back to that right away. He just stood there a while longer, looking at the empty clearing, before he finally reached down and picked up the relic sitting where Vrashkull had fallen.
```
[ Dragwir Relic (1 of 4) acquired. ]
```
’One down.’
He looked at the remaining four of them, quiet and worn, and thought about three more mountains still waiting somewhere out there.
"We are returning to base. And we hunt everything on the way. I want Tower Points."
"Roger."
Logan’s fists clenched. ’I know exactly how to build the army that can annihilate everything and keep everyone alive.’
He needed a proper formation of Mythic units. Units that specialize in defense and protecting others. Units that heal and buff others. And units that specialize in killing others.
