Chapter 245: Chapter 211: Unexpected Guests
Just then, a team member suddenly reported in a low voice, "Captain, there are some strange tracks here. They look like footprints, but not quite human."
Bena quickly walked over to the team member and crouched down to carefully observe the ground. "They’re definitely unusual. Could be some kind of large animal, or..." He didn’t finish his sentence, but a trace of vigilance flashed in his eyes.
"What should we do, Captain?" the team member asked.
"Strengthen patrols in this area and notify the other squads to be on high alert. We can’t rule out any possibilities." Bena stood up and gave the order.
The team members immediately sprang into action. They spread out, checking the surrounding environment more carefully. Meanwhile, Bena returned to the command room to report the situation to Ye Yun.
"Ye Yun, we’ve found some unusual tracks outside the perimeter wall. Could be outsiders or an unknown animal," Bena’s voice came over the radio.
Ye Yun’s voice quickly replied, "I understand, Bena. Keep a close watch. If necessary, you can take defensive measures. I’ll send people to reinforce you."
"Roger that. We’ll continue our reconnaissance," Bena said, ending the call. His gaze grew more resolute.
As the night deepened, the patrol team discovered more unusual tracks. They followed them cautiously, eventually finding a group of lost travelers in a hidden valley.
The travelers looked exhausted. Some of them were injured, and they had clearly lost their way in the wilderness.
Bena signaled his team to remain vigilant. He stepped forward and asked in a calm tone, "Who are you? Why are you here?"
One of the travelers, who appeared to be their leader, stepped forward. He watched Bena warily and said, "We’re wanderers from the north. We got lost on our way south. We mean no harm, we’re just looking for a place to rest."
Bena observed them for a moment, then nodded. "I see. I’m Bena, captain of this shelter. If you mean no harm, we can offer you help. But before that, we need to be sure you aren’t a threat to our shelter."
"We truly mean no harm," the wanderer leader said. "We just want to find a safe place, rest for a bit, and then continue our journey."
Bena thought for a moment before making his decision. "Alright, I believe you. Follow me, I’ll take you to the shelter. But remember, if you try anything, we won’t go easy on you."
"Thank you, Captain," the wanderer leader said gratefully.
Bena led the patrol and the group of wanderers back to the shelter. Before entering, he reported the situation to Ye Yun again.
"Ye Yun, we’ve confirmed the travelers mean no harm. I’m planning to bring them into the shelter," Bena said.
Ye Yun’s voice came back quickly. "Alright, Bena. You did the right thing. We’ll give them the help they need, but we’ll also stay vigilant."
Bena brought the wanderers into the shelter, where they received a warm welcome from the residents. The medical team provided treatment, while other residents offered them food and a place to rest.
In the shelter’s conference room, Bena and Ye Yun spoke with the leader of the wanderers.
"Where did you come from? And where are you headed?" Ye Yun asked.
"We come from a small settlement in the north," the wanderer leader replied. "The resources there were depleted, so we had to leave to find a new place to live. We heard there are some fertile lands in the south, so we wanted to see for ourselves."
Bena nodded. "I understand your situation. But as you’ve seen, this world is full of danger. If you’d like, you can settle here for a while. Once you’ve recovered your strength, you can continue your journey."
"Thank you so much for your generosity," the wanderer leader said. "We’ll consider your offer."
Over the next few days, the group of wanderers was well taken care of in the shelter. They exchanged stories and knowledge with the residents and gradually became part of the large family.
Bena and Ye Yun also learned about the situation in the north from them, information that was invaluable to the shelter.
Ultimately, the group of wanderers decided to continue their journey, but not before forging a deep friendship with the shelter’s residents.
"Thank you for your help and hospitality. We will never forget this place," the wanderer leader said as they parted.
"May your journey be safe. If you ever have the chance, you’re always welcome to return," Ye Yun responded.
Bena also offered his well wishes. "Take care, my friends. May you find the home you’re looking for."
As the wanderers’ figures disappeared over the horizon, Bena and Ye Yun returned to the shelter. They knew this unexpected encounter had not only brought the shelter new information and friendship but had also reaffirmed that their decisions and actions were the right ones.
"We must not only protect ourselves but also help those in need whenever we can," Ye Yun said to Bena.
"I agree," Bena nodded. "It’s our responsibility as a shelter, and our responsibility as human beings."
The two of them looked at each other and smiled, their hearts filled with hope and conviction for the future.
