The Cosmos was vast, its space stretching infinitely, and within this endless expanse where the concept of direction was almost meaningless, a single entity drifted through the vacuum.
They were a humanoid figure cloaked in a long, black, hooded robe. They had no visible face, only a dark void where one should’ve been, with two glowing, iridescent lights where eyes should’ve existed.
Held within their hands was a paper book, and as they drifted through the emptiness without any apparent destination, they silently turned its pages.
The light of the innumerable stars filled the darkness around them, while also illuminating the enormous hyperverse "below" them, the cradle of the continuously expanding complex multiverses of the Cosmos that encompassed the endlessly increasing number of universes scattered across the fabric of existence.
Within the vast Cosmos existed many races, each branching into millions of distinct breeds that had spread across the endless universes through the passage of time, and no matter how different they became, every one of those races and breeds could trace the origin of their bloodline back to a special class of beings known as Progenitors.
Those Progenitors were Origins of their respective races, the first ancestors from whom entire civilisations had descended, but even they possessed an Origin of their own, and that Origin of theirs was the solitary being drifting through the infinite vacuum, the First Progenitor.
Turning a page of the book, they quietly read aloud in a neutral voice that was neither male nor female.
"There is one thing that all existences across the Cosmos dread, a fundamental fear hardwired into the instincts of every being that could call themselves ’living’, and that is the ’Fear of ENDs.’
Be it the end of peace, the end of hope, the end of happiness, the end of a joyful pastime, the end of loved ones, the end of freedom, the end of prosperity, the end of purpose, the end of dreams, the end of kingdoms, the end of empires, the end of a reign, the end of civilizations, the end of power, the end of a world, the end of a universe, or the end of their own existence."
Flipping the page, they continued reading the next passage, which explained that there wasn’t a single being in existence who didn’t fear ENDs, even if they convinced themselves otherwise.
Deep within, every existence feared ENDs, although many never came to realise it, not even until after they’d reached their own end.
It was this fear of ENDs that had led trillions upon trillions of existences across the Cosmos to theorise every possible way all of existence, as far as they could perceive it, might one day come to an end.
Mortals theorised the end of their worlds, Deities theorised the end of their universes, and Cosmic Realm existences theorised the ends of the Multiverses and the greater Cosmos itself.
Upon reaching the end of the page, the First Progenitor nodded lightly before voicing their opinion on the belief expressed by the book.
"I agree."
Flipping to another page, they spoke their thoughts aloud, voicing the reasons they agreed to no one but themselves.
"The Primordial Progenitors all once believed themselves immune to this fear of the end, but when they discovered the existence of the Previous Era and learned that everything had been reduced to void, even they began to feel fear.
Finding the Hall of Origin and realising that the roundtable at its centre was a Cosmic Artifact from the Previous Era that could be used for the Calculations of the End only deepened that fear."
After all, it was proof that others before them had already tried and failed to stop the inevitable END.
"They fear the end of their power, the end of their authority, the end of their legacy, the end of everything they’ve accomplished, the end of those they hold dear, and the end of their lives.
But what they all fear most is everything they’ve built over billions upon billions upon billions of years of existence ending as nothing, consumed by the all-encompassing void."
If the Great Fate of the Cosmos could truly be calculated, the unknowable becoming knowable, then it meant the Cosmos had entered the path toward certain doom.
The ’Calculations of the End’ were devised to reveal the moments, locations, trajectories, and existences within the Cosmos’ progression that were capable of setting that inevitable conclusion into motion.
"They’re far from the first set of Primordial Progenitors to discover the Calculations of the End. They’re even relatively quick. Just a few trillion years.
In fact, these Calculations of the End are nothing more than a method created by the Primordial Progenitors of a previous Era."
They were about to turn the page of the book in their hands when they paused, raising a finger to their chin beneath the hood as they muttered, "What Era was that from again? The 1368th? The 1369th?
It’s been so long that I’ve forgotten, but I’m sure it was somewhere around those Iterations that I began hearing about these Calculations of the End."
Returning their hand to the book and turning the page, they continued, "Utilising the Cosmos’ own system, the laws by which it exists, to predict its own end."
A chuckle slipped from their lips as they spoke.
"Ingenious, I have to say. It never occurred to me even once, even after a thousand Iterations of the Cosmos, and I possess the power of Knowledge itself."
Shaking their head, they thought of two other beings with similar powers and laughed.
"I suppose this is another reminder that possessing a Cosmic Authority over Knowledge doesn’t make one omniscient."
They turned the page to the next Chapter before reading the title printed across it.
"Theories of the END.
A collection of theories regarding the potential possible ends of the Cosmos, beginning as the ramblings of someone who’s likely witnessed the ends of many a universe, before eventually expanding those ideas to the scale of the Cosmos itself.
"As for the names...."
They paused to look through the list before muttering, "These are the names the humans of the Origin Multiverse’s Earth came up with, aren’t they?"
A scoff escaped them as they mentioned the first item on the list.
"Big Crunch? Their understanding of the laws of gravity was rudimentary, at best, when they came up with this theory. They’d only just discovered that gravity existed because the fabric of space-time curved under the influence of mass. That’s the basics of the basics.
How could they then dare to predict the expansion of the Cosmos reversing and collapsing into an incredibly dense state?"
Turning to the next page, they immediately facepalmed.
"Big Rip? Who was responsible for these theories? The fabric of existence isn’t so fragile that atoms and Cosmic space itself could be torn apart by nothing more than spatial expansion."
By the third, they shook their head as they sighed.
"Big Freeze? Why is everything prefixed with ’Big’, and as for this one...!"
They read through the pages fully intending to criticise the theory, but the moment they saw the details behind it, that desire disappeared.
"Infinite expansion until stars burn out, black holes disappear, and everything becomes cold, dark, and lifeless?
A state where maximum entropy is reached, meaning no usable energy remains for stars, life, or any physical processes to continue. It can also be called Heat Death?"
After reading it aloud, they considered it for a few seconds before nodding in agreement.
