Elion turned his attention back towards Vivian. "You were trying to capture her alive?"

Vivian’s silence and the violent narrowing of her eyes were enough to confirm Elion’s suspicion.

Zenovia looked towards her in surprise. "What?"

"I can see the paralysis poison on her weapon," Elion explained. "It is strong enough to put you to sleep, but not enough to kill you."

Vivian’s frown deepened.

There should have been no visible trace of the poison, and even high mages would struggle to sense it without touching the blade directly.

"How can you see that?"

Elion ignored the question.

"If you intended to kill her, you would have used something more lethal. Judging by the signals you exchanged before we arrived, you planned to provoke a fight and take her back alive."

Zenovia’s eyes narrowed as she looked between the two assassins. "Is that true?" Vivian remained silent for several moments.

There was little point in denying it now. Elion had somehow seen through the poison coating her dagger and noticed the discreet signals she had exchanged with Cain, leaving almost no room for a convincing lie.

She slowly lowered her weapon. "Yes."

Cain frowned.

"Vivian."

"The pretense is already useless," she replied without looking at him.

A complicated situation had become even more complicated, and the worst part was that Vivian could not read the strength of one of the women Elion had brought with him either.

The fact that both Elion and this extraordinarily beautiful woman were either using some kind of strength-concealing artifact or were simply that much stronger than them was deeply concerning.

The other young woman was only an Adept Mage, but it was still effectively four against one.

Then there was the fact that Cain was now completely enthralled, having finally realized that two exceptional beauties had graced him with their presence.

This fool, Vivian thought inwardly.

She could only hope he would not do something stupid that would get them both killed. Engaging in a fight now that the situation had turned against them would be unwise.

They had already lost the initiative. Assassins were at their strongest when striking from an ambush, and an open confrontation like this, while outnumbered, was far from ideal.

That was not even mentioning the fact that Vivian had no intention of antagonizing Elion, especially after what she had just witnessed.

Those eyes were probably not merely for show, considering what had happened when the two of them looked into them.

Now, she finally understood what the master had meant when he warned them not to trust everything their eyes showed them when next they met Elion/

"So, how do you two want to settle this?" Elion asked.

...

After agreeing to a temporary truce, the group of six returned to the inn where Vivian and Cain had been waiting earlier.

They took a large table inside and ordered several refreshments.

It was strange how quickly they had gone from being on the verge of a fight to calmly sharing a table.

On the bright side, at least Vivian and Cain had finally managed to find Elion.

Zenovia sat beside Elion, keeping a wary eye on the two assassins across from her. Vivian appeared composed, but her attention moved constantly between Zenovia, Elion, and the two women who had accompanied him.

Mira sat on Elion’s other side, quietly studying everyone around the table, while Zenith occupied the final seat beside her.

Cain had initially attempted to sit directly across from the two women, but one cold glance from Vivian had persuaded him to choose the seat beside her instead.

That did not stop his eyes from wandering. Vivian kicked him beneath the table.

Cain’s expression twitched.

"What was that for?" He whispered.

"You know what it was for." He grumbled, but just about managed to keep his eyes from wandering again.

"Ahem." Elion cleared his throat, giving the pair a look. "I would appreciate it if we could get this over with as soon as possible. I have places to be."

It was now Cain’s turn to frown.

Never mind all the disrespect up until now; this young man was perhaps the most arrogant person he had ever met.

"Kid, did your parents never teach you to respect your elders? Just because we agreed to settle things peacefully does not mean we will continue accepting your disrespect."

Elion sighed.

"I respect my elders plenty, but why should I show the same respect to people who are clearly weaker than me?"

He leaned back casually in his chair.

"The fact that we are sitting at the same table and that you were allowed to keep your heads earlier should already be a sign of my respect, no? I do not know what more you expect from me."

Cain shot to his feet violently, spilling his cup of water across the table, but Vivian grabbed him and pulled him back down into his chair.

"Settle down," she hissed.

"Let me teach this arrogant brat a lesson!"

"This arrogant brat is more powerful than you are."

"Like hell he is!" Cain snapped. "He is only using some underhanded means to manipulate our minds and intimidate us; there is no way he managed to become more powerful than I am in so little time since that little tournament! Let me show him what real fighters are capable of!"

Elion sighed.

"I have been ignoring the fact that you have been ogling my women for quite some time now. Do you truly believe I am so magnanimous that I would allow it to continue?" He rose to his feet.

A violent wave of presence immediately crashed down upon Cain.

Some of it leaked across the rest of the inn as well, and every nearby patron lost consciousness without the slightest resistance.

Vivian was not in a much better state.

The grating roar of a dragon thundered violently through her ears, and in that moment, she felt it as clearly as day.

The materialization of Elion’s presence.

The pride of a dragon.

Only then did she realize that if this young man truly wanted them dead, all it would take was a single word from him, and they would slit their own throats without hesitation.
