--Chapter 23--

Title: Surprises at the Table

Solaria’s smile remained for a few seconds before she seemed to realise that everyone else was still watching her.

Her expression immediately became shy again as she lowered the fork and looked down at the table.

A well hidden wave of flush travelling up her neck.

"...Would you like another bite, Master?"

Takeshi looked at the fork. And then back at Solaria.

"You’re still going to feed me?"

Solaria’s fingers tightened slightly around the handle. "If you don’t want me to... I wo--"

Her voice became quieter towards the end, her eyes slanted downwards.

Takeshi shook her head immediately he saw her dulling expression. "I didn’t say that."

Solaria’s eyes lifted towards him excitedly again. There was a tiny spark of relief in them.

"Then..."

She carefully cut another piece from the roast again, doing her best to avoid Lana’s glare.

Takeshi watched her for a moment before opening his mouth.

The second bite was just as good. Actually, it might have been better.

The meat practically fell apart the moment he bit into it, while the sauce carried a faint herbal sweetness that balanced the richness perfectly.

He chewed slowly this time. Not just because he was trying to appreciate the flavour.

Because he genuinely didn’t want it to end.

Nyxara noticed and spoke, "Master?"

Takeshi looked towards her. She was staring at him while holding half a loaf of bread in one hand.

"You’re making a weird face."

"That’s called eating," he rolled his eyes.

"I can see that."

"Then why are you staring?"

Nyxara shrugged before taking another bite off her bread.

"You look happy."

Takeshi paused.

That was...

He looked down at the plate. If it wasn’t for Nyxara, he would have missed it.

This feeling, he hadn’t felt properly in years.

It was strange how something as simple as eating or was it been fed, could make him feel like this.

Back when he’d first arrived, the Church had thrown him and the other useless heroes into that miserable cage and fed them whatever garbage they considered suitable for people they expected to die.

The food had been useless. Basically scraps that were left after everyone else had eaten.

He’d gotten used to swallowing it without complaining because complaining had never improved his situation even before being isekaied.

Now he was sitting inside a manor that had technically been given to him because the Church didn’t know what else to do with him, being fed a proper meal by a woman who looked genuinely pleased because he enjoyed something she made.

Takeshi stared at the roast for another moment.

"...This world is weird," he unknowingly said out loud.

Solaria pretended as if she didn’t hear but Nyxara tilted her head.

"That’s what you’re thinking about?"

"No," Takeshi denied blatantly.

"Then what’s on your mind master? Shall we fuck again ?"

Takeshi shook his head and smirked. "Eat your food Nyx."

"I’m already doing that."

"Quite diligently, as well," Lana’s lips curved mockingly.

Nyxara’s eyes shifted towards her.

The Vampire hadn’t touched a single dish since sitting down.

Takeshi noticed it too,"Why aren’t you eating?"

Lana glanced towards the food, "I have no need for it."

"Right...," Takeshi remembered. ’Vampire’

It made sense, she wouldn’t be bothered with eating things like this. Then what would she eat?

He returned his attention to Solaria, who had already prepared another bite while he spoke.

"You’re surprisingly good at this," he praised her.

Solaria froze. "...At feeding you?"

"Cooking."

"Oh," Her shoulders relaxed.

"I was worried you meant..." She stopped herself.

Takeshi raised an eyebrow, "Meant what?"

Solaria’s face immediately reddened, "Um...Nothing."

Lana looked towards her, then back at Takeshi before switching back to Solaria again.

The tiniest smile was directed towards Solaria and the Fallen angel picked it up almost immediately.

Her face became even redder, her legs weakened slightly. "Lana...?"

"I said nothing," The vampire shrugged.

"Why are you smiling?"

"I smile occasionally."

Nyxara snorted at the remark. "She’s definitely hiding something."

Lana’s crimson eyes shifted towards Nyxara the moment she heard those words.

"I’m nothing like you little Demoness."

Nyxara immediately became quiet as if a seal was placed on her lips.

Takeshi blinked at the exchange. ’That was fast?’

He glanced between them. Never had he seen Nyxara fold that fast for anyone.

Nyxara looked away and stuffed another piece of meat into her mouth.

"...I’m eating. Stop comparing me to them stalker."

Takeshi almost laughed and wanted to asked about their relationship, but he decided against it.

Mostly because he suspected whatever history existed between those two would probably be more trouble than it was worth.

Instead, he looked towards Solaria.

"There’s something different about the food."

Solaria’s hands paused.

Takeshi had noticed it several bites ago.

There was warmth spreading through his body that had nothing to do with the temperature of the meal. His sore muscles were loosening, and the ache left behind by the Tower battle had already faded.

"This isn’t just good cooking."

Solaria lowered her gaze suspiciously and spoke softly. "...No."

"So?"

She hesitated. Then she quietly answered.

"I used some of my magic."

Takeshi leaned back slightly. "Healing?"

She nodded. "A small amount. Nothing dangerous."

’its healing, How could it be dangerous?’ Takeshi thought but said something else.

"How small?"

"Just enough to help your body recover while you eat."

Takeshi looked at the bread she was already bringing towards his mouth.

That explained the strange warmth. He took another bite.

"Thanks Sol."

Solaria’s fingers tightened around the fork again, her eyes losing focus for a second. "I can do more."

Her voice was still quiet, but there was something different about it now.

Takeshi looked at her, his eyes scrutinizing her beautiful figure. Solaria swallowed at the intensity of his stare.

"I- I mean... I can adjust the effect depending on what you need."

Lana rested her cheek against one hand.

"She’s been wanting to tell you that since you sat down."

Solaria’s head snapped towards her without saying a word.

"What?" Lana smirked.

"Please don’t..."

Lana’s expression remained perfectly calm.

"I am merely helping."

Nyxara laughed from across the table. Solaria’s cheeks burned at the teasing.

Takeshi shook his head.

’These three were going to be a problem. But at least they were his problem.’

He took another bite from Solaria before deciding to check something that had been sitting in the back of his mind since leaving the Tower of approval.

His status window.

Merely thinking of the word. "Status"

The translucent pale green window appeared before him.
