--Chapter 33--

Title>>

Walking through the capital after leaving the place felt somewhat different than Takeshi had actually expected.

The palace district had given him a clean, almost artificial impression of Eldrath.

Everything there had been wide and clean roads, guarded entrances, and buildings designed to remind visitors that important people lived nearby.

The city beyond it was nothing close to that. It was like walking through a portal and into a completely different world.

The farther Takeshi and Lana walked from the manor, the more crowded the streets became.

Stone roads gave way to narrower market lanes where merchants had pushed their stalls almost into the path, leaving just enough room for people, carts, and the occasional horse to squeeze through.

Canvas awnings stretched between buildings, providing patches of shade beneath the morning sun.

There was copper pans hanging outside one shop, leather goods filled another, and several merchants had written their prices onto wooden boards with chalk.

The noise around the market came from everywhere at once.

Merchants calling out their wares. Wheels rolling over uneven roads. People arguing over prices. Children running between adults before being dragged back by irritated parents.

Takeshi slowed down to the bare minimum. He had seen cities like this before. Certainly in games. But this was different.

There was no interface separating him from it. No map telling him where everything was.

Or even any convenient marker hovering over a shop that said "Equipment Store."

In this case, he had to actually do it the traditional way and actually explore.

Beside him, Lana walked without any trouble, her posture as composed as ever.

Walking alongside Lana drew a different type of interest to him. The maid uniform did exactly what it was supposed to do.

People looked at Lana’s crimson hair, her unusual beauty, and the expensive-looking uniform before their eyes moved away again. Nobody stared at her long enough to cause a scene that wasn’t blatant drooling.

Takeshi glanced sideways at her. "Seems to be working."

Lana understood what he meant immediately and smiled. "Yeah..."

"The image you portray is good."

She looked ahead. "People prefer an explanation they understand."

Takeshi nodded at her insight. Truth be told.

A horned demoness walking beside him through open streets like this would have created a completely different reaction.

But now, all they saw was a beautiful maid accompanying a hero, which was something the capital could accept.

Even if the beautiful maid happened to be a vampire queen.

"Funny how short-sighted we are.." Takeshi nodded.

Lana’s lips curved faintly, holding back a small smile. "You sound surprised."

"I’m not..." Takeshi stopped and looked at a apothecary shop to his right.

"You have much to learn about people," Lana sneaked in.

Takeshi looked at her. "That’s rich coming from someone who has been sealed away for centuries."

Lana’s smile finally gained its freedom. "Which is precisely why I find watching them so entertaining."

Takeshi rolled his eyes and they continued deeper into the market.

It wasn’t long when they caught the heavy smell of iron and blood.

Takeshi glanced toward the source. A row of butcher stalls occupied one side of the street, their counters covered with freshly cut meat.

Workers moved between them carrying trays while customers argued over prices.

Lana’s pace calmly changed. Her breathing had become quieter, and her crimson eyes lingered toward the stalls for a moment longer than they should have.

Then she looked away without a single word.

Takeshi didn’t say anything either.

Instead, he turned toward a clothing shop. A wooden sign hung above the entrance, painted with a simple needle and thread.

He didn’t dally and just walked into the shop. Lana followed closely behind him.

The difference between the shop and the market was immediate.

The noise of the market dulled behind the closed door, replaced by the softer sounds of fabric being moved and shelves being opened.

A black-haired man with silver side burns looked from behind a marble counter. His perculiar torquoise eyes fell on Xavier then it trailed back to Lana.

Settling on Lana for a moment, recognition slowly appeared on his face.

"Hero Deva Grayfort?"

Takeshi who was already inspecting some fabrics stopped for a moment. He hadn’t expected that.

The man with the silver side-burns on the other hand , straightened quickly.

"My apologies, Hero. I didn’t mean to stare."

"It’s fine," Takeshi waved off his apology.

The man’s eyes briefly returned to Lana again. "Are you looking for something in particular?"

Xavier nodded and strolled slowly to the counter. Glancing around the shop.

"Several things actually. First I need clothes that can actually survive adventuring."

His words strung up the Tailor’s eye brows. A single glance was all he needed to start framing an approach.

"Your current clothes have already answered that question."

Lana covered a small smile with the back of her hand.

Takeshi sneaked a glare at her. Forcing the vampire to lower her face slightly.

The tailor continued regardless.

"I have several sets suitable for travel. Nothing too expensive unless you want something formal."

"I want both," Takeshi said while tapping on the marble counter seemingly restless

The tailor shuffled back slightly. Before reaching for some clothes.

"Any specifics?"

"Nothing much really. I just need something battle ready and something I can wear when I have to deal with nobles."

The man’s expression changed. He seemed to understand that this wasn’t the request of someone who planned to remain a nobody.

He began pulling clothes from the surrounding shelves.Takeshi followed him between the displays, checking the fabric, stitching, and weight of each piece.

He wasn’t looking for something flashy. Just suitable clothes that could survive this life.

The tailor eventually brought out a dark set of fitted trousers, a clean shirt, a heavier coat, and a pair of reinforced boots.

Takeshi inspected them. And nodded. "ow much?"

"Three silver and eight copper," The trader’s brows raised up.

Takeshi didn’t even reach for the pouch on his belt when the tailor’s expression changed immediately.

"That will not be necessary, Hero."

Takeshi had already pulled out a coin when he looked at the tailor. "Why?"

The man stared at him for a second before carefully explaining.

"Because one gold coin is worth one hundred silver. And you can pay for your next purchase. This is free."

Takeshi’s fingers stopped. He slowly looked down at the coin.

’One hundred?’

So the twelve hundred gold from the Tower wasn’t simply a decent amount of spending money. It was an absurd amount.

He put the gold coin away and stretched his hand for an handshake. The man met his handshake mid way.

Lana watched them quietly. She didn’t necessarily have anything to say.

Once they stepped away from the counter, she spoke. "Anything else?"

With a silent wave of his head, Takeshi alerted her otherwise and they continued shopping.

By the time they left the tailor’s shop, Takeshi had purchased several sets of clothing, a formal outfit, additional boots, and a heavier coat for colder weather.

The total barely made a dent in the gold he carried.

That realization was almost more concerning than the original amount.

He looked at the bags in Lana’s hands. Then at the remaining coins in his pouch.

"This is actually ridiculous."

Lana glanced toward him. "What is?"

"I’ve been walking around thinking I had barely enough money to survive."

He weighed the pouch in his hand. "I could probably buy half this street."

Lana’s expression became thoughtful.

"Probably less than you think."

Takeshi looked at her. As they continued walking.

"You have enough money to attract attention, Master. That is different from having enough money to own the capital."

Takeshi considered what she said for a second with a thoughtful expression. "That’s good."

"Good?" The Vampire’s crimson eyes asked even before her lips parted.

"Yeah..," Takeshi smiled. "That means I still have a long.way to go."

He looked ahead at the crowded market. The city had became a lot smaller and definitely more interesting.

All that was left now, was to get some actual gear.
