--Chapter 34--

Title: Going Shopping [3]

The gear district was only a few streets away. Unlike the clothing shops, the stores here were louder.

Metal rang from open workshops, merchants argued over enchantment prices, and adventurers moved in and out carrying weapons that ranged from simple metal blades to equipment that clearly cost more than most houses.

Takeshi slowed down immediately they entered the first shop.

Several weapons hung along the walls, armor occupied wooden stands, and several glass cases contained small enchanted objects.

A sign close to the counter listed out their different services, ranging from repairs to sharpening, and mana reinforcement.

Takeshi’s eyes rested on the weapons, then it moved to the weapon in his position.

The Dusk Blade rested at his side as he drew it halfway from its sheath causing the blade to catch the light.

It was still a beautiful weapon. The bright mana steel had an almost mirror-like finish, while the subtle runes near the base of the blade remained almost invisible unless the light struck them correctly.

Takeshi turned it slightly. Balancing and brandishing the blade.

The sword was medium-sized for a shortsword, balanced closer to a practical fighting weapon than a ceremonial blade.

The point was symmetrical, giving it a clean thrusting profile, while the edges were sharp enough that he had no desire to test them with his fingers.

He wasn’t a swordsman. That much hadn’t changed. But the weapon itself was good. And he didn’t need to be a master sword’sman to point that out.

After a while he slid it back into its sheath with ease. "I’ll be keeping this."

Lana glanced at the sword. "At Closer look, it seems like a better weapon, Compared to--" she didn’t finish her statement, only gesturing to the rest of the room.

"Exactly," Xavier said. Turning around,.he looked across the displays again.

"I just need everything around it," he said almost inaudibly.

Lana smiled and followed behind him, fully aware of what he wanted to do.

Takeshi spent the next several minutes examining equipment.

He went through a reinforced belt, a minor field kit. And some maintenance tools for his blade. Including a specialized glove that made handling the sword easier in the future.

There was also few mana-treated pieces that could improve durability without interfering with his existing equipment.

After a while, Takeshi had the end rewards of their shopping neatly stashed.

Unfortunately for the trader, Takeshi believed in usefulness before extravagance.

He wasn’t interested in spending money simply because he had it.

The merchant seemed almost disappointed by that.

"You don’t want an enchanted robe?" The man asked.

Takeshi looked at the expensive garment hanging behind him.

"What does it do?"

"It improves resistance to elemental attacks."

"Hmmm," Takeshi narrowed his eyes."How much?"

"Five gold coin."

Takeshi’s expression froze while he stared at the merchant. "That much for that?"

The merchant immediately started explaining the quality of the enchantment. And just as expected, Takeshi listened.

Then shook his head after the short sermon by the Merchant. "Not worth it."

Lana’s lips curved faintly at how blunt Takeshi was about somethings.

The merchant looked slightly offended. But chose to stay quiet.

Takeshi didn’t care. He wasn’t going to be swindled by a medieval Temu.

After all, he had spent enough time playing games to recognize inflated stats when he saw them.

If something didn’t provide enough value for its price, he wasn’t buying it.

Eventually, he settled on the useful pieces and paid 20 silver coins for the not so flashy gear.

When they stepped back outside, the city had become even busier.

Takeshi adjusted the new coat around his shoulders. It fit far better than the clothes he’d be stuck in for the past couple of days.

He looked down at himself briefly. "Now...this is better."

Lana glanced at him and gave a nod of approval. "Absolutely."

Takeshi looked at her. "Thanks for the compliment."

"It’s only an observation," Lana teased.

Takeshi shrugged, dusting invisible dust from his coat. As they continued walking.

The crowd thickened around the next intersection, forcing them to slow down. A group of adventurers passed in front of them, laughing loudly about some recent Rift expedition.

Takeshi listened without meaning to.

A burly adventurer started. "Three days in the western sector."

"You should’ve seen the second chamber," a younger one replied.

"I heard the Guild is changing the reward structure."

"Because of the Tower record?"

The last sentence caught Takeshi’s attention. Forcing him to turn slightly.

The men continued walking before he could hear more.

Takeshi looked toward Lana. "Isn’t that interesting."

"Very," Lana placed a hand underneath her chin as she held the bags they purchased in the other.

They didn’t need to say what they were thinking. But one thing was sure. His Tower record was already spreading.

And it was happening, a lot faster than he’d expected. Takeshi looked around the market again.

The glances had changed too. Some people were looking at him more openly now.

Not everyone recognized him. But enough of them did.

The capital had begun to attach a story to his name.

And Takeshi was beginning to understand something.

The twelve hundred gold wasn’t the most valuable thing the Tower had given him.

Because right now, he was pulling attention to himself and that was a different currency of its own.

Amidst their journey back, the duo encountered another situation.

A passer-by was bleeding profusely after a bad accident.

But instead of treating the scenario as something normal. Takeshi noticed how Lana lost her focus for a moment.

There was something about fresh blood that affected her more than she wanted him to know.

Takeshi wasn’t planning to press her about it in the middle of the street. So he continued walking beside her.

Hoping to reach the safety of their Manor in time. Then a not so familiar but definitely annoying voice came from ahead.

"Well, if it isn’t the Tower’s special boy."

The words made Takeshi slow down a little. Two men stood near the entrance to a side street.

The taller one of the two already folded his arms, his expression carrying the kind of confidence that usually came from having other people nearby.

The second man stood half a step behind him. Both of them were looking directly at Takeshi.

Lana’s expression didn’t change. Her crimson eyes were locked on Takeshi, who looked at the pair in an unamused manner.

He already had a feeling this was going to be annoying.
