--Chapter 36--

Title: Making Preparations

<Back at the Manor>

Lana followed behind him as they entered into the private manor and closed the wooden door behind them.

With Lana’s shadow abilities, they had managed to avoid unnecessary eyes when they arrived in the palace again.

The main sitting room was quieter than when they left. Nyxara was nowhere in sight.

And Solaria was arranging the things left around the room. Dusting and cleaning as if she hadn’t sensed them coming the moment they entered the palace grounds.

Walking forward, Takeshi placed the field kit on the mahogany table at the center of the room.

Then he sat on the cleaned couch, placing both his legs over the table.

"I want to know how this kingdom works," he boldly declared.

This drew the attention of the already interested Solaria. As she looked over in genuine interest. "Master?"

Takeshi raised a brow. "I thought you didn’t see me?"

"No. no...No..." Solaria’s calm voice lost its softness. The pitch increased, going up a few decibels as she moved over to his left hand side even as Lana stood on the right.

Lana placed the bags of the other clothes beside the table. And Solaria picked it up without being told and disappeared into the master’s bed room.

Even as Solaria left in a hurry. Takeshi turned his attention to Lana.

"Money. Guilds. Shops. Property. Anything that matters if someone actually wants to build something here. I want to know it all."

He pulled the pouch of gold from his belt and set it beside the kit.

"I don’t want to spend this blindly," he completed.

Lana regarded the pouch for a moment. "That is sensible."

"I know it is."

She gave him a faint smile. "You have already spent part of it on things you needed. The remainder should be treated as an opportunity rather than simply a fortune."

Takeshi nodded and rolled his eyes. "That’s what I’m thinking."

He opened the pouch. There was still a ridiculous amount left. Spending a few coins had barely made a difference. But that did not mean it was endless.

"If I can turn some of this into something that produces more money, then I don’t have to worry about running out," he said more to himself than Lana.

Lana’s expression sharpened with interest. "An investment?"

"Exactly," Takeshi smiled. For an ancient being. Lana seemed more inclined than any of the others. Hence why she was head maid.

He leaned against the table. "I don’t know what the best investment in Eldrath is yet."

Stopping himself, he reiterated. "I don’t know what the best investment in this world is."

The returning Solaria approached quietly. He voice low. "Would the Guilds know?"

Takeshi looked at her, parted his lips then looked away.

’Probably.’ he thought. Without answering her directly. His silence made her heart skip a beat with worry.

Truthfully, she had a good point that he had not considered earlier, but now that it was raised, it made sense.

The Adventurer’s Guild would not only handle quests. It would connect merchants, craftsmen, information brokers, and people who understood how the city actually moved.

That made it worth visiting.

He glanced at Lana. "By now, you should know more about the current world than the others."

"Somewhat," Lana gestured as she slowly sat on the arm rest to the right of the couch.

"From Garrick?" Takeshi made a guess.

Her eyes narrowed slightly. "Yeah, among other things."

Takeshi did not press, though he had some other guesses. "Then we start with what you know."

Lana leaned closer, her crimson eyes and warm breath mere inches from his face. "I don’t know everything yet. I am not working with too many useful tools. But I have a few ideas."

"That’s fine. I don’t need everything. I just need enough to know what questions to ask around here."

A small smile touched her mouth. "You need one noble family on your side."

Takeshi narrowed his eyes. "Elaborate!"

For the next three minutes, Lana gave him a lecture on how nobility and royalty as well as the church were the framework of such a human prejudice kingdom.

Everything flowed from those three strongholds. And finally she ended with a statement.

"Possessing money and understanding wealth are not the same thing, Master."

He stared at her for a moment, he didn’t even know what to say. This vampire was too good to be true.

He smiled. "Fine. You know your stuff, we start with guilds while we play our cards for noble alliances."

Solaria covered a small smile. And nodded. She was obvious happy, he took her suggestion as well.

Lana on the other hand brushed her lips on his cheeks softly before withdrawing herself.

The immediate silence that followed after their short conversation was cancelled by something from deeper inside the manor which came with the sound of something heavy falling. Or was it something exploding.

All three of them turned toward the corridor. And from within, Nyxara’s voice rang through the house a second later.

"I meant to do that!"

Takeshi closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead even as Lana’s teasing smile widened.

Solaria quietly shook and lowered her head.

After a relaxing breath, Takeshi picked up the pouch again. "First, money."

And then turned to look toward the corridor. "Then I’ll figure out what I’m going to do with her."

From the other room, Nyxara’s indignant voice billowed.

"I heard that!"

Takeshi could not help but to start laughing.

***

The laughter faded once the noise from the corridor settled.

Takeshi looked at Lana again. The market scenario and the useless Orrick came back to him almost immediately.

With a stern expression, he touched her hand softly.

"You’re hungry."

The Vampire who felt his touch, turned and didn’t pretend not to understand. After all, it wasn’t a question.

"I am managing it," she playfully tried dismissing it.

Her crimson eyes held his for a moment. Her expression remained composed, but Takeshi could tell she was deciding how much she wanted to say.

"I have managed it since the seal broke," shen expressed. "I am not going to lunge at every open wound in the street."

She rolled her eyes. "If it becomes a problem, you will know."

Watching her close and securely, he believed she could control herself. What concerned him was everything that could happen if ever control slipped.

"If it becomes a problem, You come to me first."

Lana’s lips curved faintly at the sight of his calm.

"You don’t have to worry, I’ll be careful."

That wasn’t what Takeshi wanted to hear but it was enough for now.

He wasn’t interested in embarrassing her over something she was already handling.

If Lana De Reyes said she could control her hunger, he would take her at her word for it.

But he simply needed to make sure the matter never became a problem for anyone outside the manor.

Lana noticing his worry even underneath his calm expression. But she was content to leave the subject there.

"Garrick is still being watched, by the way."

Takeshi’s attention shifted back to her.

"By who?"

"The same people who have been interested in what happens around this manor."

Her tone remained casual, but Takeshi knew better than to mistake that calmness for a lack of importance.

"What about him?"

"Nothing has changed enough to make him worth touching yet."

Takeshi nodded slowly. "Then leave him for now."

"I agree," Lana rested her fingers lightly against the edge of the table.

"He is useful where he is. If we interfere now, we lose whatever information he might provide later."

Takeshi considered that. Garrick was still a piece on the board. There was no reason to remove him simply because he was available.

After all, he didn’t just want to remove him. Garrick was eventually going to be a precursor of what he wanted to do to Isabella.

"Keep him where he is. When I come for him, I will take everything..."

"Of course," Lana’s fangs peeked out even as Solaria now sat on the left arm rest.

Takeshi leaned back against the couch. Still pretending he didn’t feel Solaria’s presence getting closer.

"And the rest of the palace?" He turned to Lana.

Lana looked at him with a thoughtful expression. After all, laying the pipelines for surveillance was the first mission she’d received from him.

"Anything I should know?" He raised a brow at her hesitation.

"There is already talk about preparations."

"Preparations?" Takeshi raised his body from the couch with a little more urgency.

"Preparations for what?"
