After that, its cultivation had risen without pause until it reached the Great Ascension Realm, and even its bloodline had undergone a qualitative evolution. To it, the laws of Heaven and Earth worked somewhat differently than they did for ordinary cultivators.
For example, it would not be forced to ascend to the Immortal Realm until it reached at least the Pseudo Immortal Realm. And that was not the only advantage it had gained from the evolution of its bloodline.
This time, it simply wanted to devour some powerful human cultivators so its cultivation could soar, giving it a better chance of safely ascending to the Immortal Realm without becoming prey to either the cultivators or the spirit beasts that resided there.
That was why it had summoned countless beasts and formed a beast tide to attack the nearest large human settlement.
As for why it didn’t attack a smaller settlement or an ordinary village?
That was because small settlements did not have cultivators at the Nascent Soul Realm or above, which it needed to devour to further increase its cultivation.
Everything had gone according to its plan. It had even discovered a route with the weakest defenses to launch its attack. The path had been somewhat difficult to find, but it had found it nonetheless.
It was as though the heavens themselves had bestowed upon it an opportunity to ascend. The route it discovered had the fewest outposts and the weakest patrols. Under normal circumstances, a beast tide of this scale would have been detected by the various human border outposts the moment it was formed.
Yet somehow, it had successfully snuck close enough to launch a surprise attack on this massive human settlement.
If this wasn’t a heaven-bestowed opportunity, then it didn’t know what was.
This King Beast, the Heaven Devouring Tiger, had even dispatched scouts ahead of time to gather intelligence, allowing it to identify the weakest section of the human defensive line.
But... what it hadn’t accounted for was that invisible steel fortress.
That spherical fortress had suddenly appeared out of nowhere before firing a devastating beam that annihilated countless of its subordinates.
Watching so many of its followers disappear in a single attack, the beast tide it had painstakingly gathered was on the verge of falling apart.
Thus... it had no choice but to personally join the attack, raise morale, and continue the assault.
If it failed to capture the city this time and devour enough humans to reach the peak of the Great Ascension Realm, it would undoubtedly become the target of countless human cultivators.
Even though spirit beasts were stronger than human cultivators of the same realm, and even though it had already reached the Great Ascension Realm, meaning the truly powerful human experts would rarely emerge from seclusion to hunt it...
Being surrounded and hunted from every direction by countless human cultivators was still a threat, and a risk that this King Beast would rather not take.
Thus... no matter what, this King Beast needed to establish its dominance and destroy that fortress in the sky.
As the King Beast led its army toward the flying fortress, the fortress’s front armor plates opened, revealing a massive surface filled with honeycomb-like launch cells.
Suddenly, hundreds of projectiles shot out from those honeycomb openings and streaked toward it.
These projectiles were dull and slow, nothing like the flying swords that cultivators were fond of using.
Seeing this, the King Beast grinned. It seemed these humans had already exhausted all of their resources in the previous attack, and now they could only launch these slow, blunt projectiles at it.
Although each projectile was enormous, measuring around two to three meters in length, none of them had a sharp edge. They were neither blades nor pointed weapons like spears.
So they posed no threat.
The King Beast, the Heaven Devouring Tiger, confidently led its forces toward the flying fortress until...
BOOM!
A deafening explosion erupted behind it.
The King Beast immediately turned toward the source of the blast.
What unfolded before its eyes filled even its beastly mind with despair.
It was a scene of annihilation no less terrifying than the judgment beam the flying fortress had unleashed earlier.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Hundreds of those dull projectiles exploded in midair, unleashing overwhelming heat and torrents of blazing fire that engulfed the sky. The flames spread through the massive flock of flying beasts until the dark cloud was transformed into a burning cloud drifting across a sea of fire.
Panic and screams spread throughout the flock of flying beasts, but the hundreds of projectiles had not finished their work.
They continued detonating one after another.
Annihilating the flying beasts.
No...
Annihilating the last army the King Beast had brought to destroy the flying fortress.
The horrifying scene stunned the King Beast. Although it had gained intelligence, it still had not reached the level of a human.
Unless a spirit beast possessed a special cultivation technique or an exceptionally powerful bloodline from birth, it could not transform into human form.
The Heaven Devouring Tiger was merely an ordinary fierce beast. It might have been stronger than most, but without the fortunate opportunity bestowed upon it when the laws of Heaven and Earth temporarily changed that day, it would never have awakened the long-lost primordial bloodline buried deep within its lineage.
Even then, evolving into its current bloodline was already its limit.
To refine its bloodline even further, it needed the blood of human cultivators.
But... now... now its army had already burned in the sea of flames that engulfed the sky.
All of its hopes were lost.
Ordinarily, when faced with such an overwhelming disadvantage, one would seriously consider retreating.
But... this King Beast, the Heaven Devouring Tiger, possessed far less intelligence than its ancient predecessors, and it was consumed by rage.
That rage had already obscured its survival instincts.
Now... the only thought remaining in its tiny brain was that it had to kill whoever was responsible for this.
It had to kill the humans inside that spherical steel fortress!
"ROOOAAARRR!"
The Heaven Devouring Tiger roared and charged toward the fortress.
Its first target was that hateful honeycomb structure.
But...
BOOM!
A powerful force suddenly struck its abdomen, sending it crashing back toward the mountain below.
Its massive body slammed into the mountainside and was buried beneath rock and earth. It could still feel the tremendous force that had sent it flying. But... even though its bloodline had not fully awakened or been further refined, the power of the Heaven Devouring Tiger’s bloodline was still protecting it.
It had not suffered much damage.
"ROOOAAARRR!"
The Heaven Devouring Tiger roared once more before bursting out of the mountain that had buried it. Its target was the cultivator. That cultivator was clearly powerful, but with the blessing of its bloodline, its hide would continue to resist every attack.
...
The man who had attacked the King Beast and sent it flying was none other than Wei Chen.
He didn’t know whether the King Beast’s attack would dent the fortress’s armor plating or not, but he would rather not find out. The repair bill certainly wouldn’t be cheap.
And he wasn’t sure whether Ximen Hao would actually be willing to foot the bill, so he had immediately rushed out and punched the beast away from his mini Death Star.
But... Wei Chen could feel it.
That attack hadn’t done much damage.
It felt as though he had punched an incredibly sturdy punching bag. His fist hadn’t inflicted much damage, but it had been enough to send the beast flying.
Then... the beast returned.
Bursting free from the mountain where he had buried it, the Heaven Devouring Tiger charged at him with nothing but fury and hatred.
Standing in the sky, Wei Chen could feel a slight pressure emanating from the beast.
"Seems like you’re built different, buddy... Let’s see which is stronger, my fists or your hide," Wei Chen muttered before charging toward the tiger and throwing another devastating punch.
BOOM!
This time, his fist slammed into the tiger’s nose, sending it flying once again.
But Wei Chen didn’t stop.
He immediately pursued the beast through the air before driving it down toward the earth below with another crushing punch.
BAKOOOM!
The King Beast crashed into the ground with tremendous force, the impact blasting open a massive crater.
Before it could react, Wei Chen followed up, raining punch after punch onto its face as it lay pinned to the ground.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
With each punch that landed on its face, the Heaven Devouring Tiger finally began to feel the concussive force rattling its brain.
Even though its hide remained unbroken beneath the barrage of powerful blows, the repeated impacts caused its head to ring relentlessly, leaving its thoughts sluggish and preventing it from forming an effective counterattack or escape plan.
— Meanwhile - Immortal Realm —
Within an immortal cave abode, a man wearing a golden mask, the Fate Weaving Sovereign, silently watched the battle unfolding below. He observed the Heaven Devouring Tiger being relentlessly beaten down by Wei Chen.
He shook his head in disappointment before raising a hand and conjuring a single thread of fate.
