Chapter 173: Still Standing

The scene returned to the clearing.

Smoke and dust filled the air, slowly drifting across the battlefield as fragments of stone settled back onto the ground.

Kael stood in the middle of it.

His clothes were torn.

Blood covered his body.

Several crimson wounds ran across his chest, abdomen, and arms, while one deep cut stretched along his side.

Yet he was still standing.

Kael breathed heavily, each breath rougher than the last as he stared through the lingering smoke.

The Mark on his palm pulsed faintly.

His wounds had already begun to heal.

Slowly.

Not nearly fast enough to erase the pain.

Kael lowered his sword slightly and looked at the ground around him.

The Blood Bullets had torn through the clearing.

Stone had been shattered.

The ground was covered with dozens of holes where the projectiles had struck.

Kael looked back at the beast.

It was still standing.

Its missing arm hung beside its body, blood pouring from the stump before slowly beginning to slow.

The beast stared at Kael.

For a moment, neither moved.

Kael took another breath.

His chest rose and fell heavily.

He remembered the instant the Blood Bullets had formed around him.

There had been no time to dodge.

No time to run.

He had only reacted.

At the last possible moment, the Mark had responded to his will.

Kael had reached toward the blood.

He had forced the projectiles to shift just enough to avoid his vital areas.

But he hadn't been able to control all of them.

Some had still struck him.

One had torn across his ribs.

Another had pierced his thigh.

Several had cut across his arms and chest.

Kael glanced down at the wounds.

They were already closing.

He clenched his fist.

"So close."

If he had reacted even a fraction later, some of those bullets would have pierced his heart or head.

The thought made his expression grow colder.

Across the clearing, the beast suddenly moved.

Kael raised his sword.

The creature stopped.

Its remaining arm lowered slightly.

For the first time, Kael noticed something different in its expression.

It wasn't rage.

It was caution.

The beast had seen what Kael had done.

It had fired its Blood Bullets from point-blank range.

It had expected the attack to end the fight.

But Kael had survived.

The creature's eyes shifted toward the blood scattered across the ground.

Kael followed its gaze.

Blood.

Everywhere.

His own.

The beast's.

The Mark pulsed again.

Kael felt the familiar connection.

The beast's blood was still within reach.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

The creature immediately noticed.

It took a step backward.

Kael straightened.

His wounds were still healing.

His breathing was still heavy.

His body was far from recovered.

But he wasn't backing down.

He raised his sword.

The beast stared at him.

Kael wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.

"You should've aimed better."

The beast's remaining hand tightened.

Its Silver aura began to rise again.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

He could feel the blood.

He could feel the Mark.

And now he understood something else.

The beast had just given him even more blood to work with.
