Hunt Race

Chapter 7: The Forgotten Name

"The past never disappears... it waits for the right moment to return."

For several seconds...

Nobody moved.

The forest remained frozen.

Even the beast seemed to be waiting.

Kael looked at his hand with a curious expression.

The strange symbol burned faintly against his skin.

"What is this?"

No one answered.

His eyes shifted toward Darius.

The legendary hunter was still staring at the mark.

But this time...

He wasn't looking at Kael like a student.

He was looking at him like a warning.

"Captain?"

Lyra's voice was quiet.

"You know what that is."

Darius didn't respond.

His grip tightened around his sword.

"Everyone..."

"Back away from him."

The hunters looked confused.

Kael noticed.

They weren't looking at him like a teammate anymore.

They were looking at him like a threat.

Kael looked at his hand with a curious expression.

The strange symbol burned faintly against his skin.

"What could this be..."

His eyes lifted toward Darius.

"To make you all fear me?"

The words hung in the air.

Darius finally looked at him.

"Not because I fear you."

"But because I don't know what you are."

The words hit the forest like a heavy blow.

Kael stared at him.

Then he looked at the hunters around him.

"If you're going to tell me I'm a danger..."

His eyes hardened.

"Then tell me the truth."

The forest fell silent.

Darius stared at him for a moment.

Then...

The beast roared again.

The ground shook.

It had been waiting.

Its six eyes locked onto Kael's hand.

Not Darius.

Not the other hunters.

Kael.

The creature lowered its body.

Like a predator preparing to strike.

Lyra noticed.

"It isn't attacking us..."

Her eyes widened.

"It's after him."

Darius stepped forward.

"I know."

Kael tightened his grip on his broken spear.

"Why?"

Darius stared at the beast.

Then at the mark.

"Because that symbol..."

He paused.

As if saying the next words was difficult.

"Belonged to someone who was supposed to have died fifty years ago."

The forest became silent again.

Kael's expression changed.

"Who?"

Darius looked at him.

"The First Hunter."

A cold wind passed through the trees.

"The strongest hunter this world ever knew."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"And what happened to him?"

Darius's eyes darkened.

"He disappeared."

A pause.

"After destroying everything he swore to protect."

The beast suddenly charged.

Darius raised his sword.

"Kael."

"Stay behind me."

But this time...

Kael didn't move.

Not because he was reckless.

Not because he wanted to prove himself.

Because something inside him...

Was telling him to stand.

He tightened his grip on his broken spear.

"No."

The word surprised everyone.

Even Kael himself.

"I don't know what this mark means..."

"But running away won't make it disappear."

The mark on his hand began glowing again.

The beast stopped.

For the second time...

It looked afraid.

Darius noticed.

His eyes widened.

Because the beast wasn't afraid of Kael.

It was afraid of what was waking up inside him.
