"I have a plan."
Leon didn't look at him.
"What?"
"Borrow me your spear."
Leon's brows furrowed.
"My spear?"
Kael nodded.
"Help me create an opening and help me get First Blood."
"Once I land the first hit, my ability will slow it down enough for us to either escape..."
"...or for the other beast to catch up."
The Alpha continued closing the distance.
Its emerald eyes never left them.
Leon remained silent for a moment.
"I'm not a fan of swords."
Kael gave a dry smile.
"Neither am I a fan of spears."
"But it's too fast."
"I can't get close."
"I need a long-range weapon."
"Yours fits."
Another roar thundered through the forest.
The Alpha ignored it.
"...Fine."
Without slowing down, the two exchanged weapons.
Kael caught the spear.
Leon wrapped his fingers around Kael's sword.
"...Don't miss."
Kael nodded.
"I won't."
Leon came to an abrupt stop.
He turned toward the charging Alpha.
His breathing steadied.
"My ability..."
"...Overdrive."
A surge of energy coursed through his body.
The fatigue weighing down his limbs disappeared.
His muscles tightened.
His heartbeat thundered.
Every sense sharpened.
"But it won't last."
The Alpha lunged.
Boom!
Leon met it head-on.
Clang!
Steel collided with claws.
The ground beneath Leon's feet cracked.
This time...
He wasn't pushed back.
The Alpha attacked again.
Leon stepped into it.
Clang!
A second clash.
Then a third.
Sparks flew with every collision.
The Alpha's claws flashed.
Leon answered with relentless swings.
Neither side gave an inch.
Another roar echoed through the forest.
Neither of them cared.
Boom!
Leon twisted beneath a sweeping claw and slashed upward.
The Alpha leaned back just enough for the blade to graze its fur.
It landed lightly.
Then charged again.
The exchange became a blur.
Clang!
Boom!
Clang!
Each collision shook the surrounding trees.
Leon's breathing gradually grew heavier.
A vein bulged across his forehead.
His swings slowed.
His arms began to tremble.
A trickle of blood escaped the corner of his mouth.
The Alpha noticed.
Its attacks became even fiercer.
Bang!
Leon barely blocked a downward swipe.
His knees buckled.
The sword nearly slipped from his hand.
Then...
The Alpha overextended by the slightest margin.
Kael moved.
The spear shot forward like lightning.
Straight toward the Alpha's flank.
One hit.
That was all he needed.
The Alpha turned its head.
Its lips curled into something almost human.
A smile.
Kael's eyes widened.
The Alpha's body dissolved into the surrounding shadows.
"Silent Veil."
The spear pierced...
Nothing.
The Alpha had vanished.
