Hunt Race

Chapter 9: A Hunter's Resolve

"Power means nothing if you don't know how to wield it."

The forest was silent.

The beast stood motionless.

Its six glowing eyes remained fixed on Kael.

Neither side moved.

The tension was unbearable.

Then...

A voice echoed through the forest.

"Enough."

The single word carried through the trees.

The beast froze.

Its six eyes turned toward the darkness.

Without hesitation...

It lowered its head.

And turned to leave.

Kael frowned.

"It... obeyed?"

No one answered.

Darius took a step forward.

A faint smile crossed his face.

"So..."

"You think you can come and go as you please?"

He slowly raised his sword.

"Since you're already here..."

"You'll leave your head."

The forest fell silent.

Darius took one step forward.

"End of Days."

Nothing happened.

No flash.

No explosion.

No movement.

Then...

The space between Darius and the beast shattered.

A silent slash crossed the forest.

The beast's eyes widened.

Its head separated from its body before it even realized it had been cut.

The massive body collapsed to the ground.

Silence.

Even the wind refused to blow.

Kael stood frozen.

"He..."

"He never moved."

Darius rested his sword on his shoulder.

"The hunt is over."

Far beyond the trees...

The unseen voice snorted.

"Just a cheap trick."

A brief silence followed.

"This isn't over."

The voice faded into the darkness.

The forest became quiet once more.

The hunters resumed their journey.

No one spoke.

After several minutes...

Darius stopped.

"We'll make camp here."

The hunters immediately got to work.

Some gathered firewood.

Others began setting up camp.

Kael sat alone on a fallen log.

He stared at his hand.

Nothing.

No mark.

No glow.

Just his own skin.

"So..."

Lyra walked over and sat beside him.

"Still wondering what happened?"

Kael let out a quiet sigh.

"I don't even know where to start."

Lyra smiled.

"Good."

Kael looked at her.

She shrugged.

"It means you're asking questions instead of pretending you have answers."

Kael chuckled softly.

"I guess."

She stood.

"If anyone knows anything..."

She glanced toward Darius.

"It's him."

As night fell...

The campfire crackled.

Darius stood at the edge of the camp.

Watching the darkness beyond the trees.

Kael approached him.

"You've been avoiding my questions."

Darius didn't deny it.

"Because I don't have the answers you're looking for."

Kael folded his arms.

"Then tell me what you do know."

A long silence followed.

Finally...

Darius spoke.

"I've hunted beasts for over thirty years."

"I've seen monsters that could wipe out entire cities."

"I've seen hunters lose themselves chasing power."

He turned to Kael.

"But I've never seen a mark like yours."

Kael's expression tightened.

"So we're both in the dark."

Darius gave a slight nod.

"For now."

A cold breeze swept through the camp.

Kael looked down at his hand one last time.

Whatever that mark was...

Whatever it meant...

He would uncover the truth.

But first...

He had to become strong enough to survive.
