Chapter 155: Chapter 155: Predator Form
Bruno was slumped against a shattered tree, metallic luster fading from his skin. He was coughing blood but conscious. His Martial King Body had saved his life — without it, the shockwave would have turned him to paste.
Wei Chen was sitting up twenty meters away, sword driven into the ground for support, one eye swollen shut from a glancing impact.
Sarah, Nadia, and Rose were grouped together near a half-destroyed tree. Sarah was dazed but unhurt. Nadia was on her knees — Rose’s arms wrapped around her, holding her up. The enhancement output had completely drained her.
Rose was still standing.
Her minor regeneration had healed the minor injuries from the shockwave, and her enhanced stamina — bolstered by the Bastion bloodline — had kept her on her feet when everyone else had been knocked down.
"Everyone okay?" Clara called out.
Groans. Coughs. Mickey strained "Define okay."
Lucian stood up. His back ached where he’d hit the trees, but Eternal Regeneration was already knitting the fractured vertebrae back together. Across the clearing, Clara pulled herself out of the shattered frost orb, her own wounds sealing shut with vampiric speed.
The water mage was still alive.
She stood where the shockwave had thrown her — or rather, where the Void Stars and the chained Light and Blood Constructs had caught her mid-flight. The left side of her body was gone. Her left arm disintegrated from the shoulder down. Part of her head was missing — the left side of her skull exposed, brain matter visible beneath fragments of bone that somehow hadn’t killed her yet. Her left leg ended at the knee, the rest vaporized.
She swayed on her remaining leg, blue hair hanging in wet strands, blood pouring from the wounds that wouldn’t close because there wasn’t enough body left to close them.
She mumbled, "You fucking bastards."
She coughed blood. Her single remaining eye rolled backward.
She collapsed to the ground and didn’t move.
The two Peak Core Realm officers stood over the captured plant cultivator, both breathing hard, and bleeding from dozens of root-thorn wounds. The controller was bound with the spear-woman’s weapon pinning his remaining good arm to the ground.
"We got him," the axe-man said, wiping blood from his face. "Once we interrogate him, we’ll know everything about the Dark Order’s—"
The cultivator’s eyes turned white.
He screamed.
His body seized. Blood vessels bulged beneath his skin. His eye rolled back.
His head exploded.
Pop.
Silence.
The axe-man stumbled backward, a splatter of red across his chest. The spear-woman stared at the headless body with wide eyes.
Mickey walked over, hands in his pockets. "So much for the interrogation."
Wei Chen sat on a fallen log, pressing cloth against a cut above his swollen eye. "I guess they don’t leave loose ends."
Clara wiped blood from her lip and looked at the sky. Green clouds were already dissipating, the rain thinning, stopping. "The soldiers and officers will have it easier now. Without the plague rain, they don’t have to constantly maintain mana barriers. The beasts will lose their lure and retreat."
Quest Completed: Destroy the creature generating the Green Plague in the Black Forest.
Reward: 40,000 SC, -2% bloodline seal, Key to D-Rank Dungeon upgraded to Key to C-Rank Dungeon, Predator Form, +10 to all stats including Charm.
Bloodline seal: 75% → 73%
System Credits: 68,000 SC
The white figure materialized beside Lucian, floating at eye level with raised eyebrows.
"Good, right?"
Lucian looked at it with a deadpan expression. "Why the fuck are you upgrading my D-Rank key to C-Rank?"
The system’s eye-dots shifted into something resembling a smirk. "Well, it seems you’ve outgrown the D-Rank dungeon based on your current combat strength. So a C-Rank dungeon will be best to push your limits."
Lucian sighed. "What’s Predator Form?"
A notification flashed.
Predator Form — Partial Transformation.Eyes become fully vampiric with enhanced tracking. Nails extend into true claws capable of piercing B-Rank defenses. Teeth elongate into fangs capable of piercing B-Rank defenses. Senses multiply. All physical stats receive an 80% boost. A dark crimson haze radiates from the body that suppresses weaker enemies purely through presence. Beasts below C-Rank may flee instinctively.
Drawbacks:Predator Instinct Override — The longer the user stays in the form, the more their thought process shifts. Tactical thinking degrades. Team coordination becomes difficult. The user begins treating allies as potential prey or competitors. After approximately 10 minutes, rational thought is significantly impaired. After 15 minutes, the user may not recognize friends.
Cooldown:After full deactivation, the form cannot be reactivated for 24 hours.
Lucian stared at the notification for a long moment. "So much for such a powerful bloodline skill."
The system shrugged. "Take the plant core. And a sample of the plague compound. The researchers will need it."
Lucian walked to the decomposing remains of the Plaguebloom. The green sludge was already sinking into the soil, but at the center — where Dawnbreaker had pierced the core — a small sphere of dense green tissue remained, pulsing faintly. He reached into the sludge and pulled it out. The core was warm, slick, and heavy for its size.
He also collected a sample of the raw plague compound from one of the dripping leaves that hadn’t been destroyed — a small vial’s worth, stored carefully in shadow storage.
The two officers had collected their own samples, scraping material from the remains into sealed containers.
"Never seen anything like this," the spear-woman said, staring at the sludge with a mixture of disgust and fascination. "Not in thirty years of dungeon diving. This creature was manufactured. Someone grew it."
"Someone will answer for it," the axe-man said grimly.
Lucian turned away and activated Primordial Sight on the plant core in his hand.
The microscopic detail was overwhelming — cellular structures he couldn’t fully interpret, genetic sequences that spiraled in patterns that seemed almost designed, mana channels that pulsed with the same green energy as the plague. But one thing was clear: this organism had been engineered to produce the plague compound as a biological byproduct, just as the system had deduced.
The system’s voice spoke quietly in his mind. "That plant core — give it to Ryan’s plant, Lumina. She can absorb it and evolve. She’ll gain the properties of the plague — not the plague itself, but the underlying mechanism. The ability to generate biological compounds. The cellular restructuring pattern. It would push her evolution significantly."
