Chapter 111: Chapter 111

Lysander’s pov

When Drake wrapped his broad, dark-clad arms around my mother, offering a protective embrace in return, she leaned into it for a moment, letting out a long, quiet breath.

It was such a small gesture, but something about seeing my mother allow herself to be held made my chest ache.

She had always been the strong one.

Even when things were falling apart around her, she had carried herself with a kind of quiet elegance that made it seem as though nothing could truly break her. She could walk into a room filled with people who wanted to see her fail and still hold her head high.

But tonight, she looked exhausted.

Her eyes were still swollen from crying, and there was a faint tremor in the fingers resting against Drake’s coat.

For the first time in a long time, she looked like someone who had finally reached the end of her strength and no longer cared about pretending otherwise.

"Thank you," she whispered again, stepping back slowly and smoothing down the front of her coat.

Her fingers moved automatically over the fabric, trying to restore some semblance of composure. It was almost heartbreaking to watch.

She looked up at Drake, her wet eyes reflecting the dim crimson light of the VIP room.

"Thank you... and can I just stay here for a while? I really just need to spend some time with Lysander."

My heart tightened.

There was something almost childlike in the way she said it.

As though she needed permission to simply sit beside her son.

As though after everything that had happened, being near me was the only place where she felt she could breathe.

Drake glanced at me, his red eyes searching my face. I gave him a small, reassuring nod.

The mate bond was like having a silent reassurance constantly woven through my veins. Even without words, I could feel Drake’s concern, his willingness to stay if I needed him, his instinct to protect me and everyone I cared about.

Right now, though, I knew my mother needed me.

"Of course, Elena," he murmured softly, his low voice echoing off the leather-paneled walls. "I will give you both plenty of space. If you need anything at all or if you need me, little bird, I will be right outside the door."

The tenderness in his voice made my mother’s expression soften.

She gave him a small nod.

He gave my shoulder a gentle, lingering squeeze before turning on his heel. The heavy oak door clicked shut behind him, plunging the suite back into a quiet, intimate stillness.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.

It was simply heavy.

There were too many things sitting between us.

Too many things we had survived and neither of us knew how to say.

I gestured toward the plush velvet sofa. My mother sat down, tucking her legs together, while I settled into the cushion beside her, taking one of her cool, manicured hands in mine.

Her hand felt smaller than I remembered.

Or perhaps I was simply noticing it now.

I rubbed my thumb gently across her knuckles, silently reassuring myself that she was here.

That she was alive.

That, for tonight at least, I hadn’t lost her too.

"So..." I started, looking at her with a quiet, lingering concern. "What is your plan now, Mom? You don’t have a husband anymore, and you left the mansion. Where are you going to go?"

The question had been bothering me since she walked away from the mansion.

Leaving Darius was one thing.

Actually building a life after him was another.

She had spent years inside that world. Years being associated with his name, his wealth, his influence, and the power that came with being his wife.

Now all of that was gone.

My mother let out a faint, dry laugh, a soft smile touching her lips as she squeezed my fingers.

"Don’t worry about me, sweet boy," she said, her voice steady and surprisingly resilient. "I wasn’t just some clueless, helpless housewife living off Darius’s credit cards. Over the last five years, I made my own private investments. I have my own offshore accounts, my own money, and I intend to use it wisely."

I blinked.

Despite everything, a small amount of relief washed through me.

Of course she had planned ahead.

That was my mother.

She had always been smarter than people gave her credit for.

She turned her head to look at me, her eyes softening with a deep, maternal warmth.

"I’m going to buy a nice, quiet house on the coast," she whispered. "A place far away from the city. A safe haven... so whenever you want to escape all of this, you’ll always have a real home to come back to."

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

A home.

I had grown up surrounded by enormous rooms, expensive furniture, servants, security, and everything money could possibly buy.

But somehow, the idea of my mother waiting for me in a quiet house felt more like home than any mansion ever had.

A genuine, bittersweet smile spread across my face. Hearing those words felt like a cool rain washing over years of buried hurt.

"That sounds perfect, Mom," I said gently.

I squeezed her hand.

Then I paused, a sudden thought striking me as I tightened my grip on her hand.

"Just... please make sure you’re careful. Drake is taking me far away for a whole week. It’s a vampire honeymoon, he’s flying us out to another country tomorrow morning."

Her brows lifted in surprise.

"Tomorrow? Abroad?"

"Yeah," I nodded, my expression hardening with sudden concern. "Which means you need to make sure you are completely safe while we’re away."

The relief I had felt moments earlier disappeared.

I couldn’t leave her behind without knowing she was protected.

There was no telling what Darius might do if he found out where she was, or if he got desperate.

The thought of him finding my mother alone made my stomach twist.

She shook her head dismissively, giving my hand a reassuring pat.

"I’ll be fine, sweet boy," she assured me. "I’m going to hire private security tomorrow morning. But I don’t want you worrying about me while you two are off in another country."

She leaned closer, her thumb rubbing soft circles over my knuckles as her voice dropped into a thick, emotional whisper.

"Listen to me, Lysander. Even if something were to happen to me... I just need you to know one thing. Nothing in this world will ever stop me from loving you. Absolutely nothing."

My throat tightened.

A sudden prickle of heat burned behind my eyes.

"Mom—"

"I mean it," she insisted, her voice trembling slightly with fierce emotion.

"It wouldn’t matter to me if I died today. Knowing that my last words to my son were that I love him unconditionally... that is all I need. That would make me feel completely fulfilled."

My chest constricted.

The thought of losing her slammed into me with such force that for a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

I had already spent too much of my life afraid of losing the people I loved.

I didn’t want to imagine a world without her in it.

"Don’t talk like that," I choked out, shaking my head as a tear slipped down my cheek. "Don’t even say that, Mom."

I wiped at my face, but another tear immediately replaced it.

"Before Drake and I board the private jet tomorrow, I’m going to talk to him. We’ll work on putting extra guards on you to keep you completely safe while we’re out of the country."

I needed that reassurance.

Maybe I needed it for myself more than she did.

Elena let out a soft, gentle laugh, reaching up with her free hand to brush the wet tear from my cheek.

Her touch was warm.

The same hand that had wiped my tears countless times before.

She offered me a warm, reassuring smile, waving her hand dismissively in the air.

"Stop worrying," she murmured fondly. "Darius has no use for me anymore. I’m stripped of his name, and I don’t hold any of his assets. It’s not me he wants."

Her smile faded slightly and softness disappeared from her eyes, replaced by a protective look as she leaned in close.

"It’s you he wants, Lysander."

My jaw tightened.

She was right.

Darius wasn’t finished.

"And his pride..." she continued, her voice quieter now. "He won’t let this go easily. You need to enjoy this week away with your mate, but you must be very, very careful."

There was fear beneath her warning. She tried to hide it but I could see it anyway.

She wasn’t only worried about what Darius might do to me. She was afraid of what might happen if she wasn’t there to protect me.

I took a deep, steadying breath, looking back into her eyes, I wanted to promise her that nothing would happen.

That Darius couldn’t touch me and we would come back safely but I couldn’t make such promises. My step father just like his son was like a disease.

So instead, I gave her the one thing I knew I could give her.

My word.

"I will be, Mom," I promised softly.

"I will be."
