I Can Devour Monsters' SSS Talents
Chapter 394: The Death That Never HappenedLian looked at the face of the brother he had never really had the chance to know throughout his entire life.
Darian was only two years older than him.
But almost from the time he had clear memories of his childhood, his brother had spent most of his time outside the country.
Training periods, family missions, studies, and things that even many members of the Vorhelm family did not have exact information about.
Their meetings were limited to a few family dinners, several formal events, and sometimes a few days of Darian staying at the mansion before disappearing again for several months or even longer.
They had not spent enough time together to become close, but the more important point was that they had not even spent enough time together to become enemies.
Then why?
Why did Darian want to kill him?
Lian looked at his brother’s calm face for a few more moments, there was no memory of an old argument and as far as he knew, there had been no serious rivalry between them.
Even when they were children, their ages and circumstances had not allowed them to build a relationship that could later turn into hatred.
But then a second thought came to his mind.
Two women.
His father’s first wife and second wife.
Lian still remembered clearly that both of them, each for their own reasons, saw his removal as a desirable result.
Darian did not necessarily need to hate him personally, perhaps he had simply received an order.
"I have such a lovely family." He sighed and said sarcastically in his mind.
But that thought brought another memory out from the depths of his mind.
During his first hours after entering Base Number 9 and before entering the Special Area, at that time, while he was looking around the base, he had felt something.
A cold and powerful killing intent that was focused directly on him.
That feeling had appeared for such a short time that even with his instincts, he had not been able to find its exact source.
He was only sure that someone there had truly been thinking about killing him.
Then everything had happened one after another and among all those events, a few seconds of killing intent had become completely unimportant and had almost disappeared from his mind.
But now Lian remembered that moment completely again.
Darian had been in this area from the beginning and now he had also admitted himself that Lian’s death had made his "job much easier."
Could that killing intent have come from him? Of course, he had no proof, at least not yet, but the possibility was too reasonable for him to ignore.
Lian’s feelings immediately became cold, Darian was his brother, they shared the same blood, but for him, that fact had a limit.
"If you really came here to kill me, then I don’t care whether you’re my brother or not." He said quietly in his mind, and his gaze became colder.
At that moment, the panel in front of his eyes changed.
[Body reconstruction: 100%]
[Restoration process completed.]
[Stored life has been consumed.]
[The holder has returned to the flow of life.]
Suddenly, the sound of his heartbeat echoed, and after several minutes of complete silence, blood suddenly entered his veins with strong pressure.
Lian’s lungs opened and air entered them violently, but at the same moment, he controlled his instinct and did not allow a deep and noticeable breath to leave his mouth.
The feeling of his body had returned, the weight, the temperature, and the cold ground under his back, his clothes were torn and wet with blood, but the thing he had expected, the pain, was not there.
He checked the condition of his body for a moment.
The heart that Seris had pierced was healthy, his chest had been completely rebuilt, and there was no sign of the deep wound on his skin.
The broken bones from his previous battles were also completely gone.
All the damage that Black Silence, Seris, and the pressure of the past few days had caused to this body had disappeared.
Only the blood-covered and torn clothes showed what condition this body had been in a few minutes ago.
He did not open his eyes, nor did he get up.
Darian was only a few meters away and the four undead were still on the battlefield, and more importantly, Darian did not know that Lian had heard his words.
So there was no reason to throw away this advantage right now.
He could not stop his heartbeat, but he kept his breathing as low as possible and remained completely still.
For now, being dead was useful.
On the battlefield, something else was happening, and the situation had become even worse than before.
The four Ancient Cindari had realized that Black Silence was dead, they could no longer feel its presence.
Black Silence.
One of the Father’s children.
An existence that had become something beyond death, time, and defeat in the beliefs of their different generations for centuries, was gone, and this disappearance was not simply a sealing.
Its presence had completely disappeared.
For several seconds, all four beings remained motionless, the swordsman had lowered his blade, the root controller had kept his fingers on the ground.
The Cindari mage had even stopped the movement of the ashes around him, and the last Cindari had turned his head toward the place where Lian’s body was lying.
Then something broke inside them, more exactly, the belief that had been the foundation of their existence for centuries, the Father’s children did not die.
They could be sealed, they could be stopped, they could be kept away from the world for a while.
But destruction? Impossible.
And yet, nothing remained, and that alone was enough for their beliefs to begin falling apart and for them to question all of their beliefs and ideas.
The Cindari swordsman suddenly released a wordless scream from his throat and his complete calm disappeared.
His sword moved, but this time it had nothing in common with precise and controlled swordsmanship.
It was wild, as if his only goal was to go crazy and destroy everything in his path so he could control his emotions that were burning like fire.
The root controller slammed his foot into the ground.
BOOOOM!
The entire area exploded and hundreds of roots came out of the ground without caring whether they were friend or enemy.
The Cindari mage opened both hands and turned part of his half-destroyed body into ash.
He was no longer even trying to preserve his own existence.
And the other Cindari also roared and attacked the nearest living being.
Rindo barely blocked the first attack.
"Fall back!" He shouted as a warning, but he knew there was nowhere left to retreat.
Those four beings no longer wanted to stay alive, they did not want to win, their belief had died, and because of that, they only wanted to take everything that was still alive with them before they fell apart themselves.
Seraphina held her sword with both hands, tears were falling from her eyes, tears that she did not even have time to wipe were moving through the blood and dirt on her face.
These were tears that had started falling from her eyes when she saw Lian’s dead body.
The Cindari mage extended his hand and a huge wall of ash moved toward her and Selina.
"Down!" Selina shouted and released the last of her large amount of remaining mana.
A wave of water rose from the ground and the ash hit the water, hot steam covered the entire area.
Seraphina moved through the steam and mana gathered around her sword, and she struck the mage directly in the side.
The blade entered, but the creature struck the girl’s shoulder with his broken hand and sent her body flying backward.
Seraphina rolled on the ground, but immediately stabbed her sword into the ground and used it to pull herself back up.
Her eyes unconsciously moved toward Lian’s motionless body and she clenched her jaw, another tear fell from her eye and she attacked the enemy again.
Selina also looked at Lian for one moment longer than she should have, her face tightened, but another wave of ash forced her to immediately raise her hands.
On the other side of the battlefield, Liana was also making the same mistake again and again.
Every few seconds she took a short look and then immediately turned her face away.
Because she knew that if she allowed herself to think about it even one moment longer, she would not be able to fight.
Only a few meters away from Lian, Seris was lying on the ground.
Sovereign’s Last Stand had ended long ago.
And with its end, all the debt of her body had been collected at once, the pain had been so strong at first that she thought her body was burning.
Then, little by little, even the pain had gone away and turned into something worse, she could not feel anything.
She could not feel her fingers and her legs felt like they were no longer part of her body.
Her left arm did not respond at all and even moving her neck a few centimeters made darkness gather at the edge of her vision.
Seris did not know how many more minutes she would stay alive.
Maybe ten minutes.
Maybe one minute.
Maybe if she closed her eyes right now, she would never open them again.
But strangely, she did not care that much anymore and slowly turned her head.
Lian was lying beside her, his face was too calm, the same man who had returned for a fraction of a second only a few seconds ago.
He had shown her his real eyes.
"Do it." He had said.
Seris had done it, she had driven her sword straight through his heart, she had felt his heartbeat stop.
The system panel had confirmed the death of the vessel.
And Seris did not try to repeat the usual sentence in her mind or tell herself an excuse such as that it was to save the Earth, that she had no other choice, or that everyone would die.
She knew those things were true and she had no other choice.
But even so... her heart did not accept any excuse like her mind did... and it was burning with pain like hell.
