The event date finally arrived though the priest was a few days late, which caused the three to be more agitated than usual, since worry was beginning to set in their hearts that the priest wouldnt make it, and they would need to wait until next year for their next chance.
But thankfully the old geezer finally arrived just before sundown yesterday making today the day for the ceremony to be perform, and the four of us orphans we're dressed to the nines in our very best clothes the 'gift' given to us from Mother.
We weren't the only children in the village coming of age so we four were made to join the regular children who still had parents as we all went to and entered the simple church at the village center, us orphans took our seats, while those with parents sat with one or both of them in their own rows.
The priest and Village chief both stood at the head of the church before confirming the number of children present.
"Thank you all for coming today as you all are sure to know, is the moment for the Rite of Awakening, when you children will be graced with the knowledge of your jobs, and... for you orphans being graced with gods mercy as a name is bestowed upon you."
Children with parents got to be named by those parents but us orphans were named by the gods, if you asked me it sounded like us orphans were the ones who were more blessed since we would get a name of the gods after all, rather than whatever our parents could manage to come up with, but at the same time that wouldnt be happening for us in the end since i had already taken action to gift names to my siblings.
"Lyon, come up here."
A kid with blonde hair and decent clothes left his parents behind in the front row before climbing up the steps to the awaiting pair of elderly men.
"Place your hands upon the plate child"
The kid followed the instruction and aside from a casual blue glow coming off the stone plate nothing else happened.
Well nothing except the priest looking down at the glowing stone and announcing the kid had awakened to the merchant job.
"Michelle."
...
...
...
On and on it repeated itself, until from freemen to serfs all the kids had been appraised at least until only us four remained, the lowest rung of the social ladder at least as far as the priest himself was concerned.
"Ophan boy you're up."
The three of us just looked at one another trying to figure out which one of us three was first, but since it didn't matter, I just pointed to Cole who was closest to the end of the pew we were seated upon.
He with a bit of a cocky swagger went up to the elder's raising his hand as he'd seen all the others do, planting his hands down onto the stone plate, which caused a much more vigourous light to be emitted a light that was white not blue.

Unable to contain his excitement Cole was bouncing in place waiting to be told what his job was, but the priest just stood there stareing blankly down at the slate at least until the village elder himself became uncomfortable and nudged the old man breaking him from his stupor.
"YEAH!!!" His voice resounded throughout the church walls. "Sir Cole has been born on this day!"
With gusto he announced coles new name for all to hear, while the regular villagers were a bit shocked as he announced the kid with Sir a title they had never heard uttered when attending one of these ceremonies before, even the village chief was shocked at hearing this.
"Congratulations Sir Cole, a knight like you will certainly be accepted into an order to receive training, truly this is an auspicious day for this village."
Hearing the results of this orphans appraisal the villagers were shocked, a knight, that's an advanced class, not to mention the lowest rung of nobility, and a boy who had only just come of age had it, why couldn't it be their child who was so gifted! Getting the chance to elevate their household from commoners to nobility.
"Next"
This time it was Cade's turn to head up, as Cole high-fived him as they passed in the aisle.
Cade took up his stance standing a bit more arrogantly than Cole had, orphans were looked down upon as worthless typically but with just Coles result things had changed and Cade felt the four of them were destined for greatness given the results of their hunts, and the fact they achieved more than the adults themselves did.
With a shaky voice the elder priest instructed the young lad to place his hands upon the slate, and similar to Cole turn, but even more different a golden light erupted from where his hands were placed, this sight caused the elders both to fall into silence once more.
But perhaps from having already gone through this moments before the priest recovered quickly and did a spittake, while almost imperceptibly saying the word 'hero' which was only heard by Cade and the village head, who upon hearing the word likewise did a spittake.
Cade himself just stood there, his posture standing even more upright, he'd heard the word and now it seemed he wanted to appear like the storybook heroes we'd grown up with all along.
"Yes! Hero Cade will save you all!"
Not announcing it with as much fervor as he'd done with Cole, but the reaction was many times greater than Cole own job, as the villagers were all standing in awe at the birth of a Hero before their very eyes, a legendary Job class that was so rare it was believed only one person in a generation could hold the job.
While the elders were trying to recover Alison chose not to wait and just marched right up onto the stage.
Raising her dainty hand plunking it down on the now vacated slate, as Cade had wandered off to join Cole and revel in their own greatness.
The moment her hands lay upon the slate, another non-blue light was emitted and this one was sort of rainbowy, but with a primary core of white light.
Seeing this the fervor going on quickly went silent meanwhile the priest as her side didnt read out her job, but instead quickly dropped himself down onto his knees and bowed deeply towards her.
"Miko Alison, it is this devout worshippers great pleasure to make your aquaintence."
"Huh? So my name is Alison, but what's a Miko?"
"Dear Lady Alison, a Miko is an Advanced Class just a rank down from being a Saintess."
The priest responded with a voice full of worship.
A just of age miko, with training a new saintess was sure to be born which would rocket his own career up the corporate ladder within the church getting him a position like Bishop or archbishop.
At this point the awakening ceremony felt like dream to most, three Advanced job classes in a row, and from orphans no less but then everyone's gaze turned to me.
The remaining orphan, if the others were like that... just what kind of a monster will he be?
Since there was no reason to prolong it, I got up passing by my siblings who were joyously talking about their results as I made my way to the stage.
Raised my hands, placed them onto the slate and...
Huffff...
"Good."
I heard this from the mouths of the elders.
Pretty sure their hearts couldn't take it if I had shown them another advanced job class.
With my regular blue light and the basic job of Villager, this marked the end of the Awakening Ceremony.
